What does this community think balance is?

Because I can tell you that is is much different from what I think it is.

Where every weapon has a specific purpose or function that makes it viable to use, or at least comparable to a weapon of equal type.

To prevent a weapon from becoming a “prop”, something you hold only because you’re looking for a weapon to trade it with.

Where the entire sandbox isn’t nearly dominated by one weapon.

“Weapon (a) killed me. NERF IT!” balancing

That’s a valid interpretation, and one I agree with, but I don’t think Halo 5 fits into that category. Halo 5 is balanced in a sense that you can get easy kills with almost all weapons in the sandbox.

Weapons are meant to kill… In their own specific area of expertise, each weapon should yield kills with relative ease.

“Every weapon is useful, especially the weapons that require no skill” balancing. You got killed by the storm rifle? Git gud, scrub.

" im dying more than 3 times around the same spot and don’t what to do- report for unsportmanlike conduct and demand other players play the way I want them too" - thumbsdontwork1984 version of balance

Weapons are useful in some capacity yet properly reward skillful or strategic use.

A really easy to use weapon shouldn’t also be extremely powerful, because that defeats the purpose of using anything else. Likewise just because a weapon is designed for a specific situation or requires thought to use doesn’t make it underpowered.

I’m not really a huge fan of “Power Weapons”. There isn’t much depth added in having really slow spawning weapons that straight up wreck the spawn weapon. In Halo Ce most weapons spawned on 30s timers, even Sniper Rifles. Only on maps where they were exceedingly powerful did they take longer to spawn. The game was set up so that weapons could skillfully contest each other. Halo Ce did have balance issues, yet the important distinction here is that none of those issues were really relevant to the power of the Magnum. Even if you nerfed the Magnum, the Plasma Pistol and Needler would still be pretty useless weapons solely because of their own inherent flaws.

Every weapon has their advantages, and every weapon has their disadvantages

I disagree. I don’t think balance should be being able to get quick kills with every weapon. I believe that each weapon should have a role, a perfect example being the plasma pistol. It’s a weapon, but crap at killing. It is useful for something other than just getting kills (stunning vehicles, taking out shields).

In Halo 5 we have the Magnum, Battle Rifle, and DMR all competing in the same role of the utility weapon. I’d rather have a handful of weapons that each have their specific role that they fill well than many weapons that all compete in filling one role: getting fast and easy kills.
