what does H4 need to take from the earlier games

if h4 was to take one thing from all the previous halo games what should they be.
CE- epicness
H2- MM
H3- the variety of weapons/vehicles and maps
Wars- new spin on things
ODST- music and free roam levels
Reach- net code, forge, and graphics
CEA- 3D and the kinect library

what do you guys think??

Interesting post OP,

The idea of taking “epicness” is so epic-ly vague and unhelpful, I don’t know why you put it there. Halo 2’s matchmaking was well outdone by Halo 3 and Reach, and well, there’s just a lot of flaws with your ideas. With that said, I feel that I should post some of my own as justification.

Halo CE
As a decade-long Halo fan, I did love Halo CE, however, there isn’t much I would take from it. After purchasing Anniversary, I did feel that the game was as amazing as it was for two reasons;

  1. The simplistic Arcade feel.
  2. It was the most stunning icon on the Xbox market at the time.

Otherwise, Halo CE has been outdone by most future instalments.

Halo 2
The fact you put matchmaking almost makes me want to cry as it was filled with boosters, bridgers, and standbyers (not to forget hardcore modding). The biggest, and most obvious thing to bring from Halo 2 would be it’s evaluation of player skill for competitive matchmaking. The ranking system was the most difficult, and most fun (as a competitive player) in any of the Halo instalments. Reasons for this:

  1. Ranking got progressively more difficult to the point where people were lucky to reach rank [35]'s whereas Halo 3 [50]'s were easy.
  2. There wasn’t a true skill system locking you down after your sigma rating began to drop and slow down.

Halo 3’s system lacked because you had to get a high rank fast before your account slowed down, and Reach’s sucked because it was a “time played” system verse skill assessment. (Don’t get me started on Arena- good in theory, bad in practise).

Halo 3
Halo 3’s matchmaking was something that was pretty well established. Limited cheating, however boosting was a problem. I find that combining Halo 2’s ranking system and Halo 3’s Matchmaking poses more success than the two individually.

Halo: Reach
I like how Bungie tried to bring new, fresh, interesting mechanics to the game. They were indeed fun, but when I wanted to get serious, they were still there and that’s what I think 343 needs to take from Reach: not its pluses, but it’s negatives to ensure that they don’t ruin the competitive environment like Bungie did Reach’s.

Halo: Wars and Halo 3: ODST
As far as they go, I liked the suppressed guns from ODST, didn’t so much rock Halo: Wars.

In Conclusion I would take into consideration moving into Halo 4:

Halo CE: Nothing (It was it’s own gem).
Halo 2: Ranking system. (Most fun and challenging).
Halo 3: Matchmaking system.
Halo Reach: the failures that come with innovation.

I hoped this helped OP. I like that there are people on here trying to stir up some debate. It gives all of us opportunity for feedback so 343 can take it into consideration for H4.

Cheers,

ANK

Reach’s netcode sucks too, black screen and black screen. Hitscan is based on H2.

BR Hitscan and No bloom on weapons = great.
