I myself am very curious about this and want to hear others opinion pr explanation to halo wars 2 plot because I loved the first on and am dying over what’s going on because the trailer left me on the edge of me seat I need theories and idea to the plot to fill this hole of information till HW2 comes out
Kill the brute and maybe try to find the spirit of fire if that didn’t happen off screen.
but why is the brute there and they were in cyro probably just woken up from deep sleep so they are not well prepared to fight so that’s why they had such a difficult time against the brute and they would be on the spirit of fire since they are in uncharted space unless something lets say a covenant carrier or small fleet containing brutes attacked the dormant ship forcing the crew to separate and be divided as escape pods lad on a new planet or forerunner installation ( when do any halo games not have all factions land on something forerunner except reach but I think there was something forerunner there to I’m not sure but every other game has something forerunner)
That could be it if this is the time were the brutes are returning home and they boarded. I have to go and rewatch the teaser but I think they were talking of the radio so lets say when they were boarding someone was messing with the controls and they were just released from their pod ( unless i have it all wrong and there is a way for someone inside to get out).
But it would have to take place after halo 3

you know its probably after halo 3 and the brutes are on the run or what ever and a stray ship of jackal pirates comes across the dormat spirit of fire and calls in some brutes to check it out and the jackals accidently release the crew causing a firefight between them and forcing both ships to land for repairs making it turn into a more ground combat so that large armies have to move in order to escape lets say a forerunner installation( a halo or Shield world) and both are trying to make repair while fighting each other , Prometheans, and flood.

if it is set halo 5 era i have a feeling we will run into the ship guilty spark took control of after they spaced his body if it is set farther in the past like the first i am unsure of what to expect
If it was set in the Halo 5 era there may not be the brute in the teaser. The brute makes me think that it is around halo 3 when they made a name for themselves and started being the main force of the covenant.
