One, if not the biggest, problem in Halo 5 is the high number of bad side characters. That might be a bit controversial, but I feel most Halo fans would agree with that. Tell me if you don’t.
So, what would your reaction be if in Halo Infinite there were a few short side quests, with side characters as protagonists? What if there were lots of side quests and not only a few? Little side stories, maybe even without story, but just chores like side missions usually are.
This was just a little nightmare I was having last night about Halo Infinite. If that was the case, I would hate the game more than Halo 5, because it would mean 343i didn’t learn anything about their mistakes, too many useless characters again. The higher the character number is, the higher is the chance to completely forget about them.
I’d be fine with side missions as long as chief is the main character in the main missions, u know? It would be pretty nice to see 343i make Locke somewhat of an actual likable character through a side mission or something while not taking away from Chief’s role.
I don’t mind side characters doing side missions. Halo 5 had alright side characters. Halo 4, I can vouch for having bad side characters like Sarah Palmer but they reduced her to a background in 5.
I say the campaign of Infinite should be experienced solely through the visor of Chief. H5 was such a slap in the face by forcing him into a secondary role in the story that it seems appropriate to spend the whole game in his shoes like back in Halo CE, Halo 3, and Halo 4.
If 343i were to announce a “Spartan Ops” style DLC played through the eyes of other characters or if they built in Easter egg style missions experienced through the eyes of Arbiter/Locke/Buck whoever, that’s fine–but I think it’d be wrong to force players to step out of Chief’s shoes during the campaign when they’ve promised Infinite is “Chief’s story,” again.
Here I’ll make the distinction that having side characters participate in the story is a very different thing than having them take over as player characters. Of course I expect certain side characters to return and play a role in Infinite and wouldn’t have it any other way; just leave the perspective the player experiences as Chief’s.

Here is the thing though, side missions are extensions of the main mission but are not required, making them secondary. Having someone else be the eyes through those don’t really take away from the “chiefs story.” The main campaign is still through his eyes and is a result of his actions. It be like assaulting the various towers in H3. Chief does one but a side mission could be you playing as Arbiter doing another. Same story beat, but through a different set of eyes without taking away from chiefs actions.
Personally, I feel the notion that Halo 5 had bad side characters is overblown. I wish more was done with them, but I wouldn’t say they were bad. Any crimes of quality the characters of 5 committed had been committed by plenty of past characters in older games with none of the hyperbole I’ve seen slung 5’s way. But, yes, I would like to see side quests with characters other than Chief. I think a more realistic concept might be side campaigns with different characters set after the Infinite main campaign as DLC or stories that evolve alongside the world ala Destiny.
I have no problem with side characters being in the main game or having their own side missions. I’m still really hoping blue team will be with chief during the campaign at least.
I don’t know, I fear they would be meaningless or pointless missions, therefore making the side characters lose importance. If I had to put a side character in, I would like to give it a decent story ark at least. Superman Kenobi made me think of something else: Spartan Ops also were not liked a lot (I assume, since all the following seasons were canceled), it’s another example why a side story, with characters no one cares about, is not a good idea. I think side missions with side characters would be ok only if they focused on no more than a couple of characters and made those characters very likable.
I would scream like a little girl if I could do a Jerome mission. Or even better, if Noble 6 was revealed in the main story, getting to do a mission as him again would be epic. These are characters that already are set for 343 to use. For example, Noble 6 is the guy that is somehow even quieter than Chief, yet somehow manages to get just as much high quality dialogue. And Jerome is the guy who is quite a team player, knows how to use the strengths of his teammates, and is quite reckless at times(to get out of a halved ship he simply jumped out of it and fell through the atmosphere). If they make sure to use already established characters, add fitting dialogue, keep their personalities right, and give them fun little stories as side missions. 343 will be golden.
Halo was always at its best when it had a small cast of characters.
I loved the inclusion of more side characters, stories and missions
Lets you immerse more in the Halo universe in General
Yes, Master Chief for the win with main campaign, but other things too would be good in Infinite too, like an upgraded Spartan Ops, merged with immersion of HALO Wars 2 and little side stories
PS. I loved being able to command Blue team :), perhaps in Infinite they can make a single player firefight option, which is harder, and you can pick a fireteam, ie: Blue Team, Fireteam Osiris, Red Team, Purple Team, Green Team, etc…
