What do the numbers mean in spartan names 117 etc?

From what I understand is that there was about 60 Spartan IIs, So why do some Spartans (John and Fred) go above that number (117 and 104)? Its been bothering me for awhile. I don’t think its a rank either because technically Fred is higher ranked than John, so it wouldn’t make sense. Can anybody help explain it to me better?

There were 150 children that were identified as possible candidates for the Spartan-II Program, through due to budget cuts, the UNSC could only afford to train 75. Which is why Halsey went around interviewing the kids before the project began proper, to make sure the 75 chosen were truly the best out of the 150 total. John’s number, 117, likely means that he was the 117th kid identified as being eligible for the Spartan-II Program.

As everything in Halo lore has an AI attached to it there is also a chance they are just a random set of 3 numbers applied by the Spartan programs main AI to each kid during conscription. I mean we already have random number generator programs with our own technology. 117 likely has meaning to some creator or writer of the game though

Thanks. Its been quite a while since I’ve read the novels.

Production-wise, his name is supposedly a biblical reference (John 1:17).

If I’m correct, there were 150 candidates for the Spartan-II Program. Only 75 children were chosen for the project. Later, less than half of these survived the augmentations and didn’t wash out.

In the Spartan-III Program, there were 300 Spartans for each Company (Gamma Company had 330). They were given a letter in front of their service number to determine which Company they were from (Example: Spartan-B312).

not true it was an homage to a bungie marathon lore master who ran thier fan page. Hamish Sinclair. H=8 S=19—819÷7=117 he transcribed all of bungies previous games for thier page and was sent emails from them before halo CE release called the Cortona letters which foreshadowed the events we are seeing now. The first mission easter egg i believe is also a refference to these letters. check em out…

I believe originally 300 Spartan IIs were to be conscripted, then Halsey’s budget was cut, halfing that number. She began identifying the 150 when she suffered another budget cut, reducing the number to 75

What everybody else is saying is correct.
Though I think the reason they didn’t drop all the number down to 1-75 for the remaining kids was out of respect for those that didn’t make it in.

That’s the number they were assigned as kids. There were 60 Spartans after the augmentations.

John was the first child Dr. Halsey went to see when going to find the children for the program

Just because he was the first to be visited doesn’t mean he was the first to be identified.

This is what is in the books

If this is referring to a bibical reference I don’t know what cause John 1:17 “For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.” Then even John 11:7 “and then he said to his disciples,“Let us go back to Judea.”” So if there is a reference it doesn’t make much sense to me. I think the closest thing I can think of in this reference is to John 1:17 that they use Moses as the John Master Cheif the law Bringer and Cortana as the Grace and Truth for John because it comes from her or vice versa.

There’s many theories on where “117” originated from, some yes including the bible, others stating its one-upping the famous James Bond (007), some going as far as to include Bungie’s lucky number 7 into complex mathematics with seemingly significant backstories. But none of these have actually been confirmed so I don’t really know what to say…

There was a list of 150 childen that were possible candidates for the spartan II program. Not all the childen were picked so the spartan number is just what their number was om the list of 150.

Alpha Company had 497 Candidates and Beta Company had 418. Only 300 of each company passed. The ones that didn’t make the cut either washed out were assigned to MJOLNIR equipped teams or HeadHunters. All 330 of Gamma Company passed training.

60 is maybe the number of kids that survived the augmentation process, but they were more kids when enlisted.

I think this thread’s past it’s expiry date. Locking it down.
