I have been playing halo since 2002, and one thing I have never really gotten is by lore what difficulty is the game meant to be on. I have read the books and it is hard to say. Sometimes its like Normal, then heroic and again Legendary, why is that. Do we play the missions accordingly or something.
So what I did was judging from most of the books I guessed it was Heroic. Mainly because in every Halo game when you put it on legendary the marines get wiped out without your support. On normal they somewhat topple the Covenant in weird ways that goes against the lore like a marines beating a Hunter to death in Halo 2 (Weird right), but on heroic it is pretty much fair game and I have been decided upon that.
Than Halo 4 came out and the beginning cut scene and Spartan ops made me just go WTF O.O did that Knight just get one shooted by a magnum.
I hope I’m not the only one thinking this and hopefully the feedback will be great. Thank you for reading.
I think in Halo 3 when you looked at the description of the Heroic difficulty it says that is the difficulty that Halo is meant to be played on. I prefer Legendary though, i always play shooters on the hardest difficulty.

It says the same on Halo 4 that Heroic is the difficulty meant to be played but I prefer legendary too
Usually Heroic is listed as the difficulty the game is meant to be played on. I always play on Heroic because it’s not too easy, but also not difficult enough to become a grind.
Heroic is the default difficulty if I’m not mistaken. For all the reasons you pointed out basically, it offers the player a good challenge without wiping out your support AI too quickly and being too easy. Of course though I believe it’s down to each individual player, if you prefer Legendary then Legendary is your canonical difficulty.
