it doesn’t actually mean anything, the colors on an ODST’s armor are just for identification.

This is probably true. I used to like to think that ODSTs had different MOSs with different colors to represent each one. However, that would be confusing in-game if there were multiple characters with the same or similar-looking armor. Bright colors on a special forces unit’s armor-clearly denoting the role of the individual-would also be a bad idea for practicality, as it not only breaks concealment, but provides useful information to the enemy…
