This is an old cringe post I made a long time ago, I edited it to make it less cringe (I was younger when I wrote it). Most of this “information” is just fan speculation, but I included references for almost everything anyways.
Here it is:
Specialist Types:
-
Gray:
GROUND FORCE SPECIALIST (Officially licensed MEGA BLOKS figure: ODST Ground Force Specialist included in set: ODST Covenant Invasion)
-
Brown:
PILOT (Officially licensed MEGA BLOKS figure: ODST Pilot included in set: ODST Hawk)
-
Green:
CLOSE QUARTERS SPECIALIST (Officially licensed MEGA BLOKS figure: ODST Close Quarters Specialist included in set: ODST Close Quarters Specialist)
-
Yellow
UNKNOWN (more information below)
(Officially licensed MEGA BLOKS figure: Yellow UNSC ODST included in set: Series 4)
-
Blue:
SNIPER (Officially licensed MEGA BLOKS figure: ODST Sniper included in set: ODST Sniper)
(Halo 3 ODST’s Romeo character)
-
Dark Red:
UNKNOWN (possibly EOD/Explosives specialist) (Halo 3 ODST’s Mickey character)
(Mega Bloks’s Red ODST set reads Heavy Weapons Specialist. This conflicts with the character Dutch, who is a heavy weapons specialist with orange armor, not red.)
-
Orange:
HEAVY WEAPONS SPECIALIST (Buck refers to Dutch as a “heavy weapons specialist” in a trailer for Halo 3 ODST)
-
White:
ARCTIC SNIPER (Officially licensed MEGA BLOKS figure: ODST Arctic Sniper included in set: ODST Arctic Sniper)
-
Cyan:
URBAN SPECIALIST (Officially licensed MEGA BLOKS figure: ODST Urban Specialist included in set: ODST Ambush)
-
Bright Red
COVERT OPS SPECIALIST (Oficially licensed MEGA BLOKS figure: ODST Covert Ops Specialist included in set: ODST Covert Ops Specialist)
(Officially licensed MEGA BLOKS figure: ODST Covert Ops Specialist included in set: Covert Ops Battle Unit)
===============================================================================================
Miscellaneous:
- A yellow specialist color exists, but it is unknown what it signifies. It is likely that it signifies a specialization not represented by an already existing color.
(Officially licensed MEGA BLOKS figure: Yellow UNSC ODST included in set: Series 4)
I have the Urban Specialist ODST.
I figured the colors were simply style choices by the wearer, much like how the Colonial Marines have art written on their armor in Aliens.

Reference for fan work and arguments mostly. As in this is a list I can use to prove a point, or look over for character reference.
Thanks, i didn’t know that
I tried to put as much evidence into this as possible, but one major concern I had is that this is mostly based on mega bloks sets. Also some of the colors are controversial. Really the only one that people can agree on is that blue means sniper. In halo 3 and reach each ODST has white armor, but the white mega bloks ODST is an arctic sniper specialist. The rookie and buck also have a faint white helmet stripe.
Some people think red means CQB because Mickey is trained in close quarters combat, wears a CQB undersuit for more agility and mobility, and wears a CQB helmet, which is outfitted with a live recording camera for his squadmates to see what he sees. But the mega bloks CQB ODST wears green armor. Other people think red means heavy weapons specialist because of mega bloks’s drop pod set. I personally think that red means explosives specialist because the mega bloks set includes a rocket launcher, and mickey is trained in the field of explosives. Other people say that the ODSTs in H3 with red shoulderpads are the squad leaders.
wee woo I can’t delete this post lol

I don’t think its that old to be locked yet.

Yeah do you know if all of those types are canon?
I would assume Unit designation might be the reasoning for colors. But it’s interesting to think of it in terms of MOS. Almost like Clone troopers in the Star Wars Universe.

Probably not, since Mega Bloks isn’t really considered cannon…
Most people agree that blue means sniper though, and the halo wiki page shows “variants” of ODST armor, and shows Romeo’s armor as the sniper variant.
I’ve made some minor changes to the vehicles section to provide more information.
Also, I forgot to mention the ODST Medics that can be seen in halo wars. They look similar to the other ODSTs but have white armor with green markings, and a very big backpack with the white cross labeled on top.

As of right now, yellow doesn’t mean anything, despite the fact that Mega Bloks has made a yellow ODST in the series 4 figure packs (discontinued)
I like to use the yellow ODST as a mechanic/technician in my stop motion, as I can’t think of any other reasonable specialist type that hasn’t already been taken by another color.
