What determines if u get assist or a kill n Halo 4

Is there an answer to this question? why does it seem that if I shoot the guy 90% of the way dead that I get and assist most of the time still if someone else shoots him last and conversely if I shoot them less than 50% but shoot them last, I still get an assist so I either got to kill him myself one hundred percent or I’m going to get an assist and that doesn’t seem to be right for anyone else so is this some kind of selective adjustment 343 makes for some players and not others or is there a definitive way to decide which kill is a kill or an assist because this makes no sense to me. I originally thought that if you got the last shot in and had some percentage any percentage really of the shot that maybe that’s how you got the kill but it never works out for me either way when there are other people involved. I would really like an answer to this question please, thank you

I honestly forget what it is for Halo 4, but I think if you do 40-50% (or more) damage required to kill another player, but not the final shot - you get the assist.

Obviously, getting the kill is just getting the kill - the final shot that killed them.

thanks much

No one likes getting their kills stolen but the overwatch-esque elimination system sucks and devalues kills in general. I can’t remember which but one of the CoD games had an assist system where you would get more points depending on how much damage you did if someone else killed the player that you damaged, so it satisfied the player by giving them the points they deserve but did not devalue kills like the elimination system does.

If someone says “I got 20 eliminations in 1 match” it holds far less weight than “I finished that game with 20 kills”.
