What causes bad hit registration?

Been having real bad hit registration lately. Have cable internet that is hardwired to the Xbox one x. Always plug the controller in. I’m clearly hitting people but the shots are not doing any damage or counting at all. Can someeone on my fireteam having bad internet cause this or someone using there phone for a Wi-Fi hotspot? Doesent happen all the time but yesterday was exceptionally bad. Got to the point where I could barely kill anybody and even melees weren’t connecting. My latency on the Xbox network statistics was 37ms. Pretty sure my internet is fine bit i don’t know what it could be. Went from plat 3 to gold 5 in one sitting. Should have quit once it got real bad. This is ruining halo for me. Also, what does focused do in search preferences?

Firstly, it sounds like you are having issues with the dedicated server that you playing on, no you can’t easily change it. It’s not always a personal internet problem.

Secondly, the Focus, Balanced, and Expanded are your search preferences based on your CSR/ hidden CSR. Focus being the search prefence looking for players with minimal CSR deviation and Expanded being the search preference looking for players with a large CSR deviation. (It also accounts for ping so Focus being ‘ideally’ the best ping and vice verse with Expanded) However! Focus often has considerably longer wait times for games in comparison to Expanded.

It’ll be your connection to the host server.
in his case it’ll be the dedicated wherever you’re closest too.
sometimes it’s not your fault and you can’t fix the problem on your end

Halo needs data center controls that let you choose which server you want to connect to based on location and ping (probably need more server locations also), much like some other games have. I think if they can fix this problem things would be awesome in the Halo multiplayer world… feel your pain OP and know exactly what your experiencing…

Thanks guys. Wish I could do something. Been real bad lately.

False. The search settings have only to do with the maximum amount of ping the game will allow you to have. Focused ensures that you will only connect to a server that has low ping; Balanced increases that limit, Expanded further increases it. However, if you search on Focused in only insures that your ping will be low. Someone searching on Expanded from far away can match with you even if you search on Focused. This is why you can find laggy players even on Focused. 343i has not released the maximum ping limits for Focused, Balanced, and Expanded.

The skill part of matching changes as a function of time. The longer the game searches for a match for you, the more it opens up the skill range to allow you to find a match, up to 2-3 standard deviations. I believe the matcher starts opening up skill ranges after 2 min or searching or so.

That is interesting. I might give focused a try. Can someone in my fireteam with bad internet or using their phone for wifi cause problems?

Their connection shouldn’t affect your connection as it’s not P2P based, but that player and the enemies who shoot at him probably will notice an effect.

At least I know it’s not their fault.
