What can still be done to better Forge Island

First of all, I want to say thanks to 343 for such a BIG map! The community has been going on about needing a new forge map, and here it is. Sadly to say, however, there a few small hiccups with it. This thread is here to discuss these issues.

  1. What the BLAM are the green screens for? (the one question itching everyone)
  2. Why is there so much space, but the same amount of budget as smaller maps?
  3. Could the map be gradually updated to give more “inventory” of items to build with?
  4. With so much space and air clearance, it would be a good dogfight map, but with what? (looks over at dusty, and falling apart UNSC aircraft hangar)
  5. Will we ever see another Forge World (Halo Reach) or Sandbox/Isolation (Halo 3) in the future with every item placable from all maps (like impact parts, and all map parts in one)

  1. For machinima I have heard. The user can customize their own backgrounds if they wish.

  2. So much space and the same budget encourages large, spacious, maps. IMO, if they raised the budget it would be hectic with that much room. You can always set kill boundaries and create a small map if you choose.

3.Its possible.

  1. Banshees, you could do a Banshee vs mantis fight, or better yet, put a mantis on a banshee and do an arial fight like that.

  2. Maybe in Halo 5.

Limitations. Severe limitations. The Xbox cannot handle this kind of power too well.
They even moved certain things to optimize the map.

Greenscreening/chroma keying. It’s where you take out the background. It’s how they made harry potter seem like he was flying, when he was just standing on a broomstick in actuality.

  1. No good map would take up the whole map. We also have the ability to place more pieces, so it’s effectively the same. More budget =/=better map = less framerate

  2. Not possible in the halo engine. The map has a link, a reference to each object, and they can’t be pasted in

  3. I’d also like sea battles, but I can’t actually see a fun map which involves lots of people flying about. Why not just use banshees if you are so desperate?

  4. It’s not possible to have loads of parts present. This is why we got 3 seperate forge maps instead of 1 forge map with 3 palettes. Maps are also text files, and the engine dynamically brings in the objects based upon their co-ords in the text file. Lots of objects slow things down, even when not in use and make the maps inherently larger.

And FW was cool and all, but it was fun for flying around in and that was it. We’ve been given more forging spaces and palattes to play with, there’s only a finite amount of stuff they can make, and 343 surpassed what bungie did as far as forgable areas go.

The OP is not even close to complaining.

Replies are good, just a few clarifications though:

  1. I know what green screens ARE, I just wanted to know what we could use them for (the common people, not machinima).
  2. I’m not saying give us 100k budget, but maybe 15-20k compared to 10k
  3. The inventory is like in Halo 3, each item has it’s own inventory. 100 1x1 blocks, 100 1x2, etc.
  4. Banshees vs Manti already happen too often, and some of us (like me) are ace pilots that enjoy and are very good in the air. The only downfall is that there is solely one flying vehicle…
  5. Yeah, it would be fairly difficult to do it, maybe bring some refurbished maps back (but please don’t take away some fun parts, like in Valhalla-cant climb pillars anymore or build a item cannon)

One last thing, it’s been driving me nuts, how does one go about getting inside the islands? (not much time to explore lately)

1)Well they are completely unaltered by shadows/lighting, so try building a map inside a box of them. With no points of reference it is almost impossible to tell which way is up/down/left/right etc. Could make for some very confusing customs.

2)Budget is limited by hardware/performance. Also cannot be changed now it’s released.

3)Don’t quite understand, but I can tell you the inventory is not per item, it is the same as any other Halo 4 map.

4)New flying vehicle would be great! Do I see it happening, no :frowning:

5)Other maps would be cool

And for the islands, just get a two way teleporter and place it beneath the surface of any of the islands (so it can’t be seen). Then place another and go through. Simple as that! :slight_smile:

Think about it this way. You want a red shirt really badly…and you get it…for FREE!!! But its too small for you so you cant wear it.

I dont think the OP is complaining about the map. I think he’s just giving some constructive criticism and asking questions.

I personally wished that there were more nature pallettes like hills or caves. You gave us bigger rocks and trees but there is only so much that forgers can do.
