What branch of our military is the Spartan Program

What branch of our real life military is a spitting imagine of the Spartan program in Halo? Thoughts and reasons?

There isn’t one. SpecOps is the closest, but doesn’t even come close.

The Spartan branch was specifically established after the Covenant War as a standalone branch of the military.

Given the jurisdictional arguments which seemed to previously ensue (Spartan-IIs were Navy SpecOps, Spartan-IIIs were Army) it’s no wonder.

Unless we have child supersoldiers running ops, there isn’t one. Perhaps Delta Force could come close to it though. Delta pulls from all branches of the military and requires years of combat experience to be considered for a spot, which sounds a lot like the Spartan-IV program minus the augmentations and fancy armor.

I would say Navy… Spartans are kinda like Navy Seals… They do use what seems to be Navy rank structure. Or maybe the USNC is what the newly established Space Force eventually turns into perhaps?

The Spartan Branch is probably most similar to JSOC, Delta Force, SEAL Team Six, or the 24th Special Tactic Squadron.

My vote it navy seals. However we don’t know if we have anything closer. I mean, it’s not like we would know about any real life super soldier, that’s all clisified to us. For all we know we could have real Halo Spartans in the world, or at least navy seals in exo suits.

None, since;

  • The US military as far as we are aware doesn’t recruit six year old children into become lethal commandos by 14. - No branch of the US military as far as we are aware has the biological technology or impunity to augment humans to the extent where they can run at 40mph, lift over 500kg or have reflexes faster than a king cobra. - The technical technology doesn’t exist to build a suit of armour even remotely close to Mjolnir, not even in a century. - The Spartans, if I were to answer this question would be a collection of all SF units in the world. So Delta/Seals, SAS/SBS, Speznaz, GROM, GIGN etc. Which leads to my last point… - Contrary to what some seem to think, UNSC stands for United Nations Space Command, not United States Space Command. As one of Halo’s many international fans, who also serve, it is a trigger when the UN in UNSC seems to be replaced by US.

First of all, thank you for your service to your country. I understand why it can be frustrating that people draw an immediate connection between the UNSC and the US military, but it should be noted that Bungie is an American-based company and the Halo series is an American-created game. So naturally people will draw those connections more readily, even if plenty of characters in the extended lore don’t hail from American (or even Earth) backgrounds. I attribute a lot of this to the fact that many of the characters in the games have American accents (Chief, Fred, Johnson, Cortana, Halsey, Jacob and Miranda Keyes, Carter, Buck and all of Alpha-9, etc). Even Lord Hood, who is from England, has an American accent thanks to Ron Pearlman.

Was mainly the Navy, but then it became its own Branch so it recruits from all services.

Kind of like advanced navy seals trained since childhood

Interesting answers, without a doubt when you think about the Navy Seals that would make the most sense. As for ODST would they be considered Army Paratroopers?

Nah, ODST’s are part of the UNSC Marine Corps. They would be like an advanced version of Marine Force Recon which are Spec Ops for the U.S. Marines.

in lore its the Navy but i it was real life probably airforce

Yes in lore, ODSTs are a part of the marines. But I really see them as an advanced airborne unit. Airborne now will drop from planes behind enemy lines. ODSTs drop from space ships behind enemy lines. So I guess it’s more of a mashup between Recon Marines and the Army Airborne.

I think the UNSC Army has Airborne forces too. The ODSTs just drop from even higher up.

Thank you. I appreciate that both holders of the Halo mantle are American so it is easier to gain experience from said military with previous titles. However in 2019 and the internet and global connections future titles have and have shown the diverse nature of the UNSC military, eg Kilo 5 ODSTs were direct references to British Royal marine commandos, HW2 has Russian and German Tank commander voices, etc.

I am simply asking that as fans we keep that in mind.

Navy. In the books several Marines call Master Chief a “swabby”. And his rank is “Master Chief” which is a rank exclusive to the Navy. Also for those of you saying “spec ops” you need to know that spec ops isn’t a branch. Even the US military’s famed Delta Force (Army) and DEVGRU aka SEAL team 6 (Navy) fall under their respective branches. Simply for the fact that if they were not technically a part of a military branch then what they do would be considered illegal under the geneva convention.

For the Spartan-IIs (and the Spartan-IIIs before they were integrated into Spartan Operations) I would say are alike our Navy Seals. I say that because they. Oth fall under Naval Jurisdiction and are both Special Forces.

As for the Spartan Operations Branch itself, I would say it would be like Delta Force. I say this because it is its own branch (I think) and they draw members from other branches which is how the Spartan-IVs were pulled, as well as the remaining Spartan-IIIs such as Tom-B292, Lucy-B091, Gamma Company survivors (minus Sabre Team who became Ferrets for ONI), and other Spartan-III Commandos who were deployed outside their parent companies.

There is a section of Spartan Operations that is joint with ONI called the “Headhunter Program”. This program maintains a select list of Spartan-III and Spartan-IV operatives. The operatives cannot be taken away from this program and for what this may represent in our world, who knows? Maybe a special Black Ops force created by the government.
