What are the motives of the banished

Just finished watching the halo wars 2 cutscenes. And wondered some questions about the existence of the banished. Correct me if I say something non sensual.

  1. Why are the banished enemies with the humanity? See, atriox defies covenant, and he might have watched the whole human-covenant war unfold. I think he completely knows the truth about the halos. As such, there shouldn’t be a cause of fight between these two entities, unless he hates the humanity just the same for no literal reason.

  2. What are their goals? Atriox wants his army to grow in numbers. But why? For dominance? Does he want the mantle of responsibility (I doubt if he even gives a fk to it).

  3. If the harbingers truly are the created or the army of Cortana ,what could have been the deal between atriox and Cortana? Maybe lead chief to her, in return for some part of her army or tech .(Nah they can’t be dat good)

(I had several questions, but as I was writing this, I forgot a few lol)

For me, as the Banished appear to stand opposed to Cortana and the Created the Harbinger must instead be either Banished, or other Covenant Splinter Group (or very possibly the Didact’s consciousness).

I don’t believe that Atriox actually hates humanity - I think post-Halo Wars 2 he’s particularly miffed at the UNSC and would see them as a serious threat to his power. The Banished are very weak compared to the UNSC. He also very likely sees the Created threat as something humanity has unleashed upon the galaxy. He appears to have a good understanding of Forerunner technology and maybe even history but also knows how dangerous it can be in human hands (see destruction of the Enduring Conviction). He likely especially mistrusts ONI and would be very suspicious of their intentions re: stopping the Created threat in that they may just try to take control of Guardians for themselves.

Atriox is all about survival and independence - hence he needs forces because only the strong survive. The UNSC will most definitely view him and anyone else who shows interest in Forerunner tech other than themselves as being a threat to them.

Oke this explains a lot, but then if he truly thinks humanity as a threat, then why would he even attack them to begin with? Seems stupid, but I don’t think atriox wants any kind of war with any faction. Maybe they should have been in a peace treaty , just like unsc is with the arbiter and his elites. He might have studied the UNSC even after the covenant war. If yes, then I think he’s aware of how powerful they are now. Seriously, although the banished is a very cool faction, its existence needs to be explaine more thoroughly.

The Banished have always been scavengers and raiders though over being a government/faction - you can’t consider them like a government type organisation - even Arbiter’s Sangehelios situation was pretty ropey there for a while. It would be like the US signing a treaty with a Somali pirate group.

The Banished (nor any of the other Covenant Splinter Groups) don’t really have civilian populations or government - they are simply armed groups.

To understand the fully rounded picture better you should read the Rise of Atriox comic, Tales from Slipsace: Hunting party, and Shadows of Reach.

Others have very much criticised his sudden anti-human animosity in Shadows of Reach, whereas I suspect these will be made clearer in time and are linked to my points above.
