What are Halcyon-class cruisers doing in H4?

At about 0:52 in this video you can see a large amount of UNSC ships with some kind of large ship in the middle(Infinity maybe?) surrounded by Halcyon-class light cruisers. What are Halcyon-class cruisers doing in Halo 4? They were already obsolete and replaced by the Marathon-class cruisers YEARS before 2552 so why is there an armada of them in 2557 during Halo 4? Makes no sense they all were decommissioned and scrapped years before.

Could be the Marathons

Could be upgraded versions that are added to the UNSC fleet. They were notorious for being tough after all. Those Marathon-class cruisers…ha.

I can’t help but think that it’s actually part of the FUD Live Action.

> Could be the Marathons

Took the words right of my mouth.

I mentioned this in the Universe section. They definitely look like the Pillar of Autumn from Reach and CEA so they are most likely Halcyon Class Cruisers. Captain Keyes in a letter to Admiral Kopano N’Singile mentioned how good the Halcyon Class could have been had they been updated with modern technology. The Pillar of Autumn herself proved extremely tough during the Battle of Reach and again at Halo.

If the UNSC needs big ships for defensive purposes they could easily bring out old ships which are retired and refit them with modern technology like the Autumn. Much quicker than building new Marathons from scratch.

Probably Marathon-class cruisers. Although it wouldn’t be entirely impossible to bring back Halcyon from retirement as a new production. It’d be interesting to see if any of the ships lost during the Covenant-Human War were respectably renamed upon newer class counter-parts of the ships.

Better question, why are falcons in Halo 4? Shouldn’t there be Hornets instead? Hornets are alot newer, they have jets on their wings, opposed to Falcons with propellers. Flacons were Pre-Halo CE. And Hornets are Halo 3 and afterwards. So why is it that in Halo 4 we use Falcons instead of Hornets, makes no sense.

Hornets are not newer. Hornets were used in Contact Harvest which means they have been around at least since 2524.

As it was, the Halcyons were already being retired when the war started and the Autumn was apparently a bugger of a credit eater to make it as strong as it was.
It’s not inconceivable that they’d retrofit the remaining Halcyons to escort the Infinity (I think that’s what we saw happening), it is unlikely that the flagship would have such a weak escort.
And considering the leap in technology since the war (but not the Infinity’s complete tech), building new ships from the ground up to integrate the new technology would be cheaper and better, though maybe not quicker and therefore not a great trade.
And because of this, it would make more sense that we have Marathons and not Halcyons. Though as said, not it’s not impossible that a reserve of Halcyons have undergone massive and costly upgrades to reduce construction time.

Also perhaps for balancing purposes. The Falcon was like a flying warthog, meaning it needed players to work together with it. The Hornet was a flying tank…

Halcyons can take a beating. Maybe the learned that again thanks to the PoA maybe they brought them back because they aren’t as big as marathon class cruisers and are probably quite a bit cheaper and can be manufactured faster. Its not always about the tech, theres the economy to consider as well.

Well the Infinity was constructed in the Oort Cloud which is outside of our solar system. It was being built for 7 years, so isn’t it possible seeing that the Infinty was going to be used if Earth was in control of the Covenant. That they may have had ships stationed there to be part of the retake Earth fleet? Some of those may have been Halcyon Cruisers.

Hornets and Falcons also fill two different roles within the UNSC.

Anyone else got any theories?

But in campaign, the Hornet is alot funner than the Falcon.

About the spacecraft, I don’t know.

About the Hornet vs Falcon debate, I believe Hornet is an AH (Attack Helicopter) while Falcon is a UH (Utility Helicopter). So they fill different roles, just like the DMR (Army) and BR (Navy).

This is the most likely scenario. Remember, this is only a couple of years after the end of the covenant war. They’re still rebuilding. The only place they have left is Earth, and that got it’s teeth kicked in during H3. So, it would make more sense to take whatever ships they have left and retrofit them with modern equipment. On top of that, I would imagine that Infinity took up alot of resources to make.

PS: Halo 4 actually takes place in 2557? Seems like a really short time. From the FUD video, it shows the infinity and what looks like a bustling metropolis. But at the end of H3, the majority of Earth was more or less a smoldering, glass slag. How did they manage to rebuild Earth’s cities and build the UNSC back up all with-in the span of 4 years?

Agreed

Hornets = Fire support

Falcons = Troop Transport.

Ot: You could be wrong as they might be Marathon

The refitted Halcyons are their most capable naval ship next to the Infinity.

The UNSC would likely begin production of new Halcyons based on the PoA specifications following the Battle of Reach.

The Pillar of Autumn if you read the book The Fall of Reach managed to score multiple kills, including a Super Carrier.
