Im honestly not quite sure…I dont have as much experience in clan battles as you but I can put forth some theories…
For the most part I think its just seeing who’s “better”, martial prowess through wins. Of course it more or less means nothing, if the map is broken and unbalanced (and it often is in my experience) then one side cant really win without luck.
Some do it for fun but those seem to be a rarity for the most part.
Team colors would remove the leaders carefully chosen “uniform” color scheme I would suppose…

Well how Raids work is that the Defending clan will have 5-10 mins to prepare the defense and then invite the enemy team basically. But if you adds teams will just ruin the fun because its just biased. Also you can wear your own clan colors armor and plus every time whena defender dies the enemy team must spawn kill just to keep them away and weaken the numbers. And also the luck of killing stealing sneaking and rushing into the base so yeah.
Is it weird that I have never even heard of this? Sounds interesting, but extremely pointless at the same time. Regardless, I hope you have fun with what you are doing…

Even further back. The very first ones were 4v4 Lockout skirmishes on Halo 2. As soon as you could do multiplayer via Xbox Live people were doing it.
