What actually is "core" Halo?

People argue constantly about it on forums. Yet i feel like we all have different definitions or understandings of what core halo is. I’ve been playing halo since I was six. 11 years later it’s now 2012 and there have been sooooo many different variations of halo gameplay.
My definition of core halo is straight from halo 2 and 3. Halo Reach is fun but I get bored because the ranking system sucks. Reach looks different. Plays different. And I dont get the same satisfaction. And this is only just barely touching what core halo means to me im just giving examples. So what really is the communities definition of “core” halo?

Guns.
Grenade.
Melee.

Fun to play, balanced weapons and good maps, good skillgap that makes you want to get better without getting you spawn killed every other game.
And, blackscreen + random host changes

blackscreen??

Everyone starting the match on the same even footing and having the better team win.

Skill >Luck.

> blackscreen??

He’s kidding babe.

where someone quits mid game (usually host) and all you see is a black screen with the leader board.

> blackscreen??

LOL!!! During Blackscreen I always say that it isn’t Halo without some kind of colored screen stoping out gameplay LOL! I wonder what color screen we’ll get for Halo 4 games that don’t have instant join and drop. I think i may actually miss it from time to time. It’s been around since Halo 2.

I would say the most crucial things that separate Halo from many other games are:

1: The health system: concept of recharging shield systems.

2: The movement settings: fast, high jumping, etc… With most games, if you’re not sprinting, you’re a snail that has concrete shoes.

3: The weapons array and their niche: the fact that every gun has a completely different type of mastery. Unlike most mainstream FPS games, most guns are carbon copies with different stats and effects (like recoil) along with different firing modes; Halo has guns that each have different purposes completely.

Most modern games take maybe one or two of these concepts and never combine them.

Yes sir

also me never getting host

Guns. Grenades. Melee.

Guns: Without the Assault Rifle, Battle Rifle, Magnum, Plasma Rifle, Plasma Pistol, Needler, and the Energy Sword… Halo just would not be the same. They’re all so unique that I can’t really forget them.

Grenades: Our ability to throw grenades out on a whim is what makes Halo, Halo. Every other FPS I have played… throwing grenades feels like a chore. But in Halo, the way our grenades fly in a beautiful arc… feels just right.

Melee: What can I say… going head on and whacking each other, twice. Halo.

Variable amount of guns

Recharging shields

Super-human meleeing

Vehicles

Can only hold 2 weapons

High speed and high jumps

Aliens

Variable amount of maps with different scenery

War

More aliens

Any halo that follows these concepts to a level (excluding halo wars as its a rts) is a definite halo game to me

Weapon, Melee, Grenade. The Golden Triangle, my friend.

boom. first post got it.

I think most people (though I’m only speaking my opinion) think that “core” Halo is essentially Halo 2 multiplayer.

This, to me looks like Halo. So I’m not too worried about what the game is going to play like.
