Dinosaurs lived for ~165 million years. That’s ~150 million years BEFORE the Forerunners even came about. Were they a Precursor creation too? Or did dinos, and by extension, all life on Earth evolve naturally?
Or what if the Precursors are actually highly evolved dinosaurs??
No, the precursors are not dinosaurs. The domain is said to contain 100 billion years of history, and the domain itself is also approximately 500 million years ago. That’s around the time in which the earliest animals on Earth began to diversify in an event called the Cambrian Explosion. That means the precursors are far older than the dinosaurs, and the dinosaurs probably a creation of the precursors seeing as they seeded life in the galaxy.
The Precursors influenced the evolution of species. In Halo: Cryptum, it’s suggested that the intelligence of cephalopods is a result of “Precursor tampering”. I think it’s possible that they may have created dinosaurs so that they could eventually create intelligent life. Some birds and dinosaurs are believed to be really intelligent. Maybe they wanted to create a Dinosauroid? But for whatever reason, it seems they scrapped that idea and decided to develop humans from the mammals.
Perhaps the precursors caused the extinction of the dinosaurs? :o

We know that the Precursors have been seeking someone to pass the ‘Mantle of Responsibility’ on to. Untill now we have assumed that the Forerunners were the first to to be judged for the role, and found lacking. By the way the Forerunners responded, with wholesale genocide, we can only assume that by being deemed unworthy, they would be slated to be expunged. We know that humans were considered for the role next…
But what about before? What if the Dinosaurs were considered to be ‘Guardians of all that exists’ and were trialed to uphold the Mantle… and failed, resulting in their extinction event?
Perhaps the tiny, pointless arms of the T-Rex doomed their species?

This no doubt factored into the extinction of their species but there are other factors that we can assume lead to the Precursors deeming the Dinosaurs unworthy. As you know drugs ran rampant through the reptilian society and -Yoink!- existed on the land air and sea and the local law enforcement officers extorted the herbivores for land in return for their lives. Don’t even get me started on their politics most legislation went unsigned and the cannibalistic practice of egg eating by the Raptors prove without a doubt the Dinosaurs were not worthy.
The dinosaurs existed before even the Forerunners and Humans were created. Since Precursors create life, they created the dinosaurs. But for whatever reason, the dinosaurs did not survive on Earth.
I don’t think the Precursors killed the dinosaurs so Humans could live on Earth, because Humans didn’t originate from Earth (or did they? I can’t remember).
What really has thrown me off/made me a bit sad is that, so far in the established Halo EU, dinosaurs have not existed outside of Earth. I would love to have to fight off a pack of raptors.

Could it be possible that, similar to the Human-Forerunner war, highly intelligent and space-faring Dinosaurs eventually rose up against the Precursors, but were devolved and/or totally annihilated when they eventually lost? Maybe that “asteroid” wasn’t really an asteroid after all.
God knows with 150 million years of evolution, dinosaurs had the time to build a space program. Or maybe the Precursors just got tired of waiting for all the lazy–Yoink- dinosaurs to do something with their lives, and that’s why they killed them.

And I totally agree. They should at least mention something in the books. Maybe there are still dinosaurs out there in uncharted systems. Technically they could’ve survived the firing of the Halo array because as far as we know, they weren’t/aren’t sentient. But holy crap, can you imagine having to fight a flood-infected T-Rex??
