What 343 can use as inspiration for Halo's ending?

This is mainly for Chief’s finale, not the saga as a whole. Who knows if 343 is planning on going Halo after John’s story is all wrapped up. But…that aside for another day.
What games should 343 use as inspiration for the end of John’s journey. Are there any at all? Should it be entirely 343’s ideas? Has this already been discussed enough to negate the post? lol welp

Pull a Sopranos and cut to black.

Thats…not a good idea.

Don’t stop…BELIEVING!!!

Scholars 50 years from now will still be debating whether this was a masterstroke or god-tier trolling.

That’s the attitude of a man who’s stopped believing.

Maybe 343 should model it loosely after Halo 3, where it’s an open ending

Wolfenstein: The New Order, easily. Have everything end by him sacrificing himself or something like that… and not having him survive for a sequel like B.J. did for The New Colossus.

I’m playing New Colussus actually. Fun game. Didnt play the new order…watched a playthrough

Discussed this before, I think he should become a teacher. Chief deserves more than a “heroic” death.

Metal Gear Solid 3’s ending. For those of you who don’t know, I’ll give you a brief summary of what this ending entails. The main antagonist, the villain, who you have been trying to stop throughout the entire game, ends up purposefully getting you to kill her. After her death, you find out that she was never the villain at all. She was ordered to become a rogue agent, destroy her reputation, and die at your hands for the sake of her country. And later, you find out the villain was never evil, but a true, undeniable patriot and a hero.

This could be the best and only way to solve this cortana crisis. Have cortana pretending to be the villain only to sacrifice herself to end it once and for all by having the master chief kill her. And on her death bed, have her reveal her true intentions. She will die a hero, and the savior of humanity.

End with an epic final battle, In which at the very end he sacrifices himself to destroy the rest of the covenant.

Not in my eyes.

I mean, if she is just pretending to be the bad guy, I guess she “pretended” to kill all those innocent people where the Guardians were too well.

Gonna take even more -Yoink–pulls and reaching than Cortana returning in the first place for that to make sense…

Think about it guys. She threatens to compose those who oppose her and reshape them in the image of the Created. Composing strips individuals of their free will and seeing as she has no problem using Promethean Knights, I can’t see her being opposed to picking up where the Didact left off. She continues to build up her slave army, the free will and form of those composed stolen from them and bent in subservience to Cortana.

Cortana going, “Surprise! I wasn’t evil after all!” won’t make that bit of nastiness be any less nasty.

So basically a retcon of Halo 5 lol.

That’s a pretty good point. I completely forgot about that (probably because Halo 5’s plot was so forgettable), but you are absolutely right. I didn’t think that answer through thoroughly enough.

Wow…interesting read. I like your thoughts. Its a viable ending; more grounded than flashy explosions and gunfire. Really nails down the humanistic element of Chief.

Thank you for that link! I believe you’ve hit it right on the money. I know alot of people on Waypoint want Chief to go out guns-a-blazing, but I think that would be a HUGE missed opportunity. Since Halo 4, Chief’s journey has become alot more personal (albeit largely neglected in H5), with John struggling to reclaim (pun intended) his humanity, I think it wouldn’t make sense for him to die because it’s what he expects it to happen. I would go so far as to say that Chief WANTS to die on the battlefield.
The hero’s journey, if some right, always entails that he or she will go through something unexpected. For Chief, a man who has been bred for war, that would seem to imply living the final years of his life without being involved in war.
John’s challenge is still to head Cortana’s warning “about being a machine,” and that can only be done when he realizes that he is meant for more than just fighting our wars. He needs a chance to live his own life, and to experience for himself what he was fighting to protect.
Please 343, you’ve rededicated yourselves to refocusing on Chief; please make this a reality.
I’ve said it before and I will say it again:
GBy Halo’s end…Give John a chance to be human!
