So, well over a year ago, 343i was saying that splitscreen was impossible because the game needed to be a constant 60fps or else it would BREAK.
But now we’re getting Halo 5: Forge for Windows 10. PCs are very variable machines, if you don’t have (at least?) the recommended specs, the game is not going to be 60fps if it can even reach 60fps in the first place.
But I haven’t seen any warning on how your game will be REQT if you aren’t maintaining 60fps.
So this tells me the game didn’t actually need to be a constant 60fps.
Has 343i lied to us once again?

60 FPS was their priority for a console shooter, so they cut graphics corners and used dynamic resolution and other tricks to keep the engine at a consistent 60 FPS for smooth competitive play. The beta actually didn’t always run at 60 FPS, and the game did not explode. I’d imagine that 60 FPS was ensured more for next gen competitive play rather than some weird tick with the physics. Computers are not created equal like Xbox Ones.
EDIT: I get that maybe 60 FPS could be a physics design too (Skyrim could have problems over 60 FPS for example with the HDT physics) but at the same time porting the game to PC, where specs are not uniform like XBone, seems like it would be risky if the physics engine was so fragile that it would break at =/= 60 FPS (ESPECIALLY in the forge sandbox environment). Plus the requirements page does not have 60 FPS listed as a minimum setting. If the engine explodes or implodes or something at below 60 FPS, why is the minimum recommended setting different from/below the 1080p/60 FPS medium recommendation?
The game’s engine in Halo 5 is already locked at 60fps for consoles. They could unlock the framerate for the pc but it’s too late to unlock it for the xbox one.

Well, the beta’s a beta, one could have argued that it wasn’t running the way its supposed to.
Especially when 343i later said the game depends on being a constant 60fps.
Which is something many called BS on before and is increasingly seeming like the case.

Well I guess we’ll see, because I doubt my admittedly pretty decent PC (Skyrim and ARK Survival Evolved at 60+ FPS) will pull off a consistent 60 FPS with the requirements of Halo 5: Forge as they are (unless there are graphics options.) Maybe the requirements are so high so that people will play with rigs that meet 60 FPS?
God forbid you don’t hit 60 fps while making new maps… “Darn I placed that piece slightly off location because I only had 45 FPS” . Is this really something that required yet another “343 lied to us” thread?
Pretty sure the PC port can go below 60 FPS because they have a recommended spec which will run the game 1080p 60 FPS just like Xbone, and they still have a min specs required.
Is it consistent though? I drop frames all the time in Warzone (all versions). I’ll grant you that it usually runs at 60 fps, but there are plenty of times where it drops to a screenshot for a second or so. I like 60 fps Halo, however I don’t agree that it’s more important than splitscreen.

Framate stability is war zone isn’t an issue as it’s just casual play. Arena is were it is important though in a since it’s casual too, Sept you have no skill showing ranks to go along with you. I can see where the splitscreen crap come into play with campaign and what not but I mean seriously, it isn’t a gamebreaker.

Not gamebreaking, but not having splitscreen has beyond a doubt discouraged some people. Hell nearly everyone of my RL friends that play Halo were introduced by splitscreen play. I understand what you’re saying about WZ being casual but you really don’t see frame drops as a problem? Being a casual mode doesn’t excuse sometimes poor performance. I’d say it is a bigger issue in WZ due to the REQ system and those frame drops possibly costing you a REQ that you could have potentially paid money for.

I understand that completely as I was introduced via splitscreen as well. But the game dropping frames is going to happen until better hardware is available. Every one wants everything at once and as you can see there is a price to pay for that. Frames are already iffy, taking that times 2 or 4 wouldn’t be a good outcome.
60 FPS was a priority… they wanted to provide seemless, competitive, 60-FPS-on-a-console gameplay. There was no “need” for it. It was just what they wanted the game to be, for competitive merit and gameplay’s sake. They made it a design requirement.
Common sense man… H5 is still very much solely an Xbone title… Windows 10 Forge is meant for Forging, there isn’t even Matchmaking functionality or dedicated servers. Does that mean 343 lied too?

Hopefully halo will get back to pleasing everyone again, I truly hope so, but for now I think bigger things need to be worked on before splitscreen is even talked about.

No it isn’t worth it. And I could do the exact same thing right now about the trailers. Sure I was pissed for the first week that I was playing Halo 5. But now who cares the has almost been out a year get over it.
