Were Master Chief and Cortan in love

While on another forum it was brought to my attention that many people don’t think that Cortana and MC were in love.

My opinion is that they were more then friends and he did love her maybe even more then some of his fellow Spartan II.

But what do you guys think?

Do they love each other?

Without a doubt. Is it in the sense that they were ‘In love’. No. They had developed a bond like no other. What was a story telling mechanic of having Cortana speak for Chief has actually turned into character development for them.

They metiforically are the same person. Two people that have grown into one. Two halves of a puzzle.

Their relationship is open for interpretation though. I’m rather adamant about my opinion, but Steve Downes said that their relationship is ambiguous and open to interpretations of all kinds.

No.

There’s a poem explaining the relationship straight from Halo: Evolutions.

Here you go.

Didn’t you ask me to make a thread for you earlier? Well I replied saying I did. It’s here.

My answer, no not “in love”. He had what strong feelings a Spartan II could posses. Nothing more.

You cant love some one that you only spend like 7 weeks with, that’s crazy!

> You cant love some one that you only spend like 7 weeks with, that’s crazy!

> You cant love some one that you only spend like 7 weeks with, that’s crazy!

To say that is to ignore the uniqueness of their relationship.

Anyway, no, John and Cortana were not “in love” with each other. That would be…illogical. However, they did have a very deep friendship.

> You cant love some one that you only spend like 7 weeks with, that’s crazy!

Romeo and Juliet took place over six days and is considered one if not the best love tragedy of all time. That being said I agree with you to a point. Under normal conditions like with said story I think it’s crazy to say you love someone you just met let alone kill yourself. But Cortana is literally in Chiefs head so it’s different.

Was WAY longer than 7 weeks, and even then, it is possible to develop feelings in even 7 weeks.

I’m surprised this is the first thread I’ve seen in my life with that subject.

Romantically in love? I doubt it. But they had a special bond like no other. Remember, Cortana was in Chief’s head and knew all about him. That’s pretty deep.

John and Cortana’s relationship is a lot more complex than simply two sentient beings being “in love”. Although Cortana may have began to feel “love” for him in the latter stages of her Rampancy.
They both have gone through and experienced things most humans/Spartans and A.I. have not, together and separate. Their experiences have created a complex relationship between the two. At some point, their “feelings” for each other may be observed as a level of mutual affection. At other points, their relationship is strictly professional and per conduct of a UNSC soldier and smart A.I.
Given John’s upbringing and mental conditioning, I don’t think he can feel “love” for another person like normal people. When Cortana is saying goodbye at the end of Halo 4, he is visibly upset, even though we can’t see his face, his mood is portrayed through his body movement and dialogue. He, at that point, viewed her leaving as a failure of his mission to protect her. He had not experienced failure like that before. He did not know how to deal with it and denied it. With all his strength, tactical knowledge, and inherent luck, he could not save her and that wrecked him.
As shown by the “Halo Xbox One” teaser, he still carries her A.I. chip. A part of him may hope that she is still somewhere out there and he can recover(save) her. He may also hold onto it as a reminder of his failure to protect her or countless other things.
Do Master Chief and Cortana love each other? Probably. Are Master Chief and Cortana IN love? No, at least not as the story canon stands at the moment.

Anyone who thinks Romeo and Juliet is about love seriously misunderstands the play.

Chief isn’t “in love” with Cortana, he never was and never would be. It’s just a very deep, platonic friendship. As I said in the other thread (Tbh this thread’s a bit pointless as everything said in it was covered in the other thread), men and women can have a purely platonic friendship while still caring deeply for each other.

Black Box was also in Naomi-010’s head for a while, doesn’t mean they’ll instantly “fall in love” as well.

Chief thinks of Cortana the same way as he thinks of his fellow Spartans.

I highly doubt that they are in love. It’s just a really strong friends ship.

Chief is experiencing the strongest “love” emotions a Spartan II could experience IMO.

I feel like the importance and depth of their relationship is severely overplayed given how short of a time they’ve been together. Unique, yes, but chief has been with his fellow spartans since he was 6, his family essentially, and lost most of them at Reach. Surely if that didn’t completely phase him, the AI he’s only been with actively for a couple months should seem like nothing.

Their relationship is severely overplayed simply because that’s the only one that the games have bothered mentioning. If you knew chiefs history, it’s almost laughable that her death would affect him as such, considering everything else he’s been through.

I don’t think Naomi and black box love each other either. they just met and didnt experience anything like MC and Cortana have. If she ever opened up to someone other then the Spartan II I think it would be to the ODSTs she’s with.

I’m not an expert on Romeo and Juliet but it was a love story, love story gone bad but still a love story.

Also MC loved all the S-II’s. They were his family his brothers and sisters, I think Cortana might have been just a little more because she was in his head and she could under stand him in a way they never could.

True however she made him see himself as more human. Lasky too of course.
