In any capacity. Which means no Forge and no Custom Games, period. In fact, the only offline mode it even looks like Halo 5 is gonna have is gonna be Campaign.
Well, it was really nice while it lasted but consider me among the many who are now not going to pay the 60 spot for Halo 5. Until they add splitscreen back in, or at the VERY LEAST, a PvE offline mode, I am completely and totally 100% firm in this decision. 343 and co. will not be getting my money.
I think what really happened here is, they got too optimistic with the engine. They wrote the engine code under the assumption that the Xbox One could maintain 60 FPS constantly and easily but the more and more they wrote it, the more they are beginning to realize, no, it’s not gonna work with splitscreen, period. At least while maintaining 60 FPS at all times. And now it’s too late and they can’t go back since too much of the engine has already been written with that assumption. sigh Don’t know what to say but… There’s just no reason for me anymore to pay $60 for this now. It sucks. It really really does. But… I guess that’s how it goes.
If I were to recommend anything, I would restart the whole project. Yes, restart it. Because I think this is just WAY too huge of a cut for Halo to take. It can’t be done. The community will not suffer it. Or at least, not for long. They need to start rewriting the engine and delay the game or else things are gonna go very badly.
I wish 343 the best though. And if they do release it like this, hopefully some people will still find it enjoyable even if a lot of us may not.
Oh well…
EDIT: They may still have Custom Games and Forge I guess but any multiplayer will have to be done with your Xbox Live friends online. I guess that’s fine but still not enough for me. Perhaps if they added offline bots… I would pick it up still.

That’s a good point. Sorry.

There is no split screen at all, because as it says it requires full screen for everything they have. I don’t really mind, I don’t play with anyone. Those years are looooong gone.

Firstly it seems like you overestimate the splitscreen community, in times of Xbox live and the internet the need for split screen is almost none existing. If I want to play with friends we do this online or we meet with our tv’s/xbox’s and have fun. Sure it’s not that great if you meet with a friend who doesn’t own a Xbox and want to play Halo together but the number of people quitting because of that is not as high as it would have been 5 years ago.
Second the marked part of your post is never going to happen and if you think about it a moment or two, you’ll notice why. They have put an incredible amount of resources into this and redoing all that stuff would be a) blocked by -Yoink!- b) enough to kill 343 I c) not worth it, considering the number of people it matters to
Weren’t the two last maps in the Halo 5 beta Forge maps?
I also doubt something as essential as Custom Games to be removed, or heavily reduced. It may not be as fun without split screen, but it most certainly will be present.
I am sorry for your loss, but I don’t split screen. I don’t know anyone that does. And for those who do, I’m sorry for your loss. Trust me I’d rather it be in than out IF IT DOESN’T SACRIFICE WHAT I ENJOY TO DO IT.
If what you enjoy is sacrificed. then Don’t play it, or enjoy what you can out of it then put it down. I usually buy games for myself.
Seems like such an strange reason to not buy a game. With todays technology you don’t want to buy it because of split screen? Really? Why not just get another TV and another X1 for your friend or family to play instead of trying to cram each other into 1 tv. I honestly cant even remember the last time I used split screen. And I have thrown a LOT of lan parties since the N64. I really mean no offense, I just see split screen becoming such an obsolete feature. Its much more enjoyable to have your own full screen.
I still can’t really understand this being a deal breaker for anybody, even if you spend a fair bit of time playing with others splitscreen. If I was still in college, I’d tell the roommates to get their own -Yoink- if they wanna play and quit mooching off of me.

Well thank goodness you’re not in charge. You’d have the studio bankrupt by the end of the year.
well not everybody has the best internet and all the money in the world to support two consoles I play on my own but I have family or close friends stay and I know a few people who have siblings or partners who play halo so I think its just killed some of its population, not with the game modes or changes but with something a biggish majority of gamers needed maybe we don’t need it but some people do so maybe try being in there shoes or the parents who will now have to fork out lots more money to get two Xboxes and two halo 5s that’s stupid and they know everyone will go back to halo reach or the collection cause of backward compatibility but that’s there downfall as then they will lose more players but they will learn the hard way also the fact my friend who has played halo since the begging even said that frank o Conner if the only one left from the ex bungie workers since the rest got fired so it kind of says why they are being abit thick ?
Sigh* I will miss split screen. It was a lot of fun when me and some friends would just play Halo for a bit after a day or night out. It’s not the end of the world. My friends who I play Halo with most times own an xbox one and the current Halo, so it’s not like I won’t be able to play Halo with them. But the days of chilling with my mates for a few games of halo are over.

Maybe not everyone is capable of buying multiple Xbox Ones with Xbox Live Gold and multiple Copies of Halo 5: Guardians?
OP, I completely agree with your sentiment entirely. While playing online with friends is fun, nothing compares to a good game of 1v1/2v2 with friends or family over splitscreen.
Hell, my brother and I still play splitscreen constantly on all the splitscreen capable Halos, so playing a Halo game that doesn’t have splitscreen that isn’t Halo Wars is going to suck, primarily because I barely have anyone on my friends list that has an Xbox One, and I don’t particularly like playing matchmaking so the only things I have to do in Halo 5 are Custom Games to explore the maps (not Warzone maps sadly), Forge, and Campaign.
Sadly, this is the end of the Halo series for me, since 99% of what my family and I do is split screen multiplayer (forge) or system link. I’ve purchased every single version of Halo up until now, including all the add ons. There’s no reason for me to buy Halo 5 now. The Campaign is not enough of a draw for me, since I play that once and it’s done, and I don’t play online multiplayer at all. We have 2 XBox 360s so we can system link, and that’s what we do most of the time with Halo. Then we played split screen multiplayer with Halo MCC. Now we will have nothing. So sad.
Fortunately, there’s still games like Call of Duty, but I will really miss Forge mode which is what I used most.

Ohhh youre going to have a great time in the H5G section. Welcome
Why cant some of you not accept that there are people who love playing splitscreen? You may dont care, fine.
I myself almost never use SC, but I see how it sucks for others.
For some people it means the world to play with theyre family and friends. And the one time in the year when my litlle cousin visits me, I wont be able to play with him anymore and try to get him into Halo.
I’m glad there’s no split-screen. Because having it would mean someone playing split-screen would have a lower resolution and most likely half the frame rate. Now, I don’t know about you. But I do not want to play, nor would I like to play with someone who is literally at a disadvantage. You would not have any fun trying to play a first person shooter today at 30fps while everyone else is at 60fps.
If Halo 5 was running at 30fps, then i’m sure it would support 4-player split-screen like it always has. But seeing as how its the first Halo game to run at 60fps. I’d take that buttery-smooth gameplay over split-screen any day.
Split screen gaming can die for all I care. There needs to be more single screen couch co-op games though

I have hosted a lot of lan parties over the year and have experienced many gaming sessions online and offline. I prefer playing online with a full screen by a long shot. Nothing compares to having your very own profile on your very own screen with your very own system.
It’s sad. I used to enjoy playing split-screen with my friend. It’s upsetting to see that option go. But in the words of the Gladiator, “Are you not entertained?” People have been bashing Halo and Xbox for a while about not being 1080p at 60 frames-per-second. They give it their all to attain that, sacrificing split-screen, and suddenly they’re abominations. The gaming community, I feel, has misplaced their priorities and become difficult to satisfy. For the last several games developers have been pushing the graphics at the behest of their customers, and it’s been a while since I’ve played a Halo game that even functioned properly in split-screen. Halo 3, 4, and Reach all had horrendous frame-rate issues. 343 took a respectable approach to the matter; if it doesn’t work properly then it’s a black-eye, so make what can work well, and cut out the excess.
I would have been happy with a game running at 720p and 30 frames-per-second, but that’s not what we want apparently. And if I’m being honest, my friend and I have circumvented the matter for years by bringing our consoles into one room and playing next to each other on separate televisions. It’s a minor hassle, but it’s almost reminiscent of LAN parties. It’s been ages since I’ve ever seen a game that split-screens properly (since the death of standard definition full-screen actually). The picture on the lower screen is always chopped off and there’s lag, always lag, even in other games besides Halo. We try to play Zombies on Advanced Warfare and the frame-rate bottoms out every time the action ratchets up.
I understand that not every community has the money for every house to have an Xbox. It’s economical for one person to buy a console and have his friends come over to game together. But we are talking about luxuries here. It’s almost impressive how such a technology has become so commonplace as to make things like split-screen irrelevant (well nearly irrelevant). Don’t get me wrong. It’s still a sad day, but what did we expect? All I can say is with a sacrifice like this, the game better run flawlessly in all other aspects.
Yes, that was my main takeaway from the OP. Boo-hoo, split screen is gone. I guess I won’t have to deal with the headache of getting into a match of BTB with half of my teammates being guests. If anything, that’s a plus for all the non-splitscreeners.
