Well, guess that's it then!

Microsoft sold all tournament rights to -Yoink!- Media, so now Halo MLG events can’t happen and there really is no reason for people like myself to stick to this dying franchise. For details, this;

How about just playing the game because you enjoy it, not because MLG tells you too.

While im not an MLG player i do recognize that MLG had its big breakthrough for halo 2…to see it just…die …its pathetic …im not blaming 343 for this one…its just sad really,…either bungie jumped ship for good reason or they left their franchise in the dust debri to just die…

"1: The growth of the video game industry is one of the problems. Sales in video games have been out-grossing blockbuster films for some years now, and the amount of money a particular game makes on release does not account for how good a game is, only for how popular the particular IP is. Unheard of games do not out-gross popular IPs on launch, that is a fact. Whether that be because people are sceptical about the release or because the publisher spends less money promoting the game.
So when Halo 4 is released Xbox owners get suckered into believing the hype and purchasing the game. Look at how much effort Microsoft went too to promote the game. There were pre-events that Roy/Meekel and other staff members on here were invited too, and Halo 4 was even at EGL. It’s always the same show from Microsoft when it comes to promotion and why shouldn’t it be, they’re selling a game after all and that’s what any business has to do. But at the end of the day, by purchasing the game you are adding to the total gross of the game and you are giving even more encouragement to 343 Industries that they’re doing a good job. If an indie developer released Halo 4 under a new name tomorrow, it wouldn’t see the light of day, and they’d go bust.

2: No pay to play is another fundamental problem with Halo, and generally the console. If you take an MMO or a free to play game for an example, the developer has to listen to community feedback in order to secure future subscriptions or purchases to make a profit. It is no surprise that 343 Industries are updating the game with a title update around the same time the next DLC map pack is released. Now, I’m being fair; to release a content update/title update to a game on the Xbox 360 it costs the developer/publisher around $40,000 (http://arstechnica.c…-360-patch-fee/). So obviously there is some business model there. But if Halo was a pay to play game, or let’s say a free to play game whereby people purchased armour permutations with real money, there would be the interest from the developer to update the game, to fix bugs, to balance weapons. I’m bringing this up because I don’t think many of you guys reading this post are familiar with these models, and if you were your opinion on how 343 Industries are going around their business wouldn’t be cool.

3: The Xbox 360 is a casual gamers playground. What I mean by this is purely subjective but it’s a problem nonetheless. The fact is that the console is catered towards families more now than ever before. After the Wii was launched and the Wii Mii characters catered towards younger children it was obvious that Xbox was going to focus on a new age group. The question you might be asking yourself is why they did this; well it was to take market share from Nintendo - why else would they do it. I was one of the people who didn’t want an avatar, yet everyone has to have one. Now you might think this is pretty offtopic, but it goes with the fact that Microsoft don’t want skill rankings to be clearly viewable in games. Take Call of Duty and Halo Reach for example, it’s a casuals paradise - no levels or ranks to worry about, just pure fun. Fun (in the form of ranks) that is taken from one selection of the community in order to satisfy another, the casuals. While 343 Industries have said they’re adding a ranking system in the latest update, you will have to go through the faf of logging into a web app to find it; clearly so they don’t offend the other part of the gaming population. Also nerfing the creation of sites to host statistics of players by 343 Industries refusing to create a public API; THAT is basic and damn right scandalous.

4: I firmly believe that Microsoft is trying to shake off the image of competitive gaming purely because there are more people who aren’t competitive gamers than those who are. Bill Gates doesn’t care if you play Halo 4 for 100 hours a week, you are only worth so much money to him. Whether that be your original purchase + Xbox Live fees + DLC. If they genuinely cared about competitive gaming then they would be sponsoring every LAN event, maybe not by providing cash funds but with some peripherals (which cost them little to nothing). I was going to mention this game at some point and this is the perfect opportunity - Riot games, creator of League of Legends supplies Multiplay with some champion skin codes to be given away to the first and second placing teams in their tournament, as well as RP (in game currency to buy skins) to casual teams playing for fun. It costs Riot Games nothing to acknowledge the fact that people are so dedicated as to travel to events to play their game. Why can’t Microsoft do this? You are playing a Microsoft game on a Microsoft console. There is no reason for them not too.
I really hate to break it to you but Microsoft don’t care about MLG, they have bigger fish to fry and MLG does nothing but show potential purchasers their game. They want game sales, not people who can watch their game for free. SEE: Monetization rules on fan created content - and how that rule magically blew up out of nowhere upon Halo 4’s release; and why cutscenes of Halo 4’s story were removed from YouTube within the first week. MLG was pretty much the last shot we had at having competitive Halo back

> Microsoft

No. MLG doesn’t decide whether I like this game or not. It’s hilarious when someone says the like the game at first, then MLG says something, that player now says the game sucks. Too many followers without a brain of their own. I blame the community over Microsoft or 343. Some people just can’t be pleased. I still think Halo 4 is so much better than Reach, but that’s just my opinion.

Dude, I thought the game was terrible before this was announced, I put my Halo 4 away in my roof space on Boxing day, I’m not following anyone.

It is absolutely unbelievable how many communities within Halo that are being disabled with all these changes, Forging was just abandoned, custom gamers have nothing to customize today and the competitive players have been getting worse and worse things progresively since H3, then Reach TU came and it was comparable to H2 in terms of fun, and the last Reach MLG event was remembered as one of the greatest Halo events of all time - Now at Halo 4 all that is just thrown into the water because the game doesn’t work competitively, they cannot customize maps and gametypes to their needs, a terrible competitive organization has monopoly over Halo events and that’s going to be the end of competitive Halo as we know it today.

Halo 4 was all about money contracts and we, the community weren’t thrown a single bone to bite on. The franchise probably moved away from Bungie because -Yoink!- could save money on it, -Yoink!- Gamin has bought ALL right for organizing Halo events and there’s probably a ton of money in that deal.

The Halo franchise is more than a sinkig ship today.

I don’t want you to be confused by thinking I’m arguing with you. I certainly can respect and understand if you don’t like Halo 4. Not everyone will. You don’t like Halo 4 for your own reasons, not because MLG made a statement. The point that I’m trying to make is that you already didn’t like the game for your own reasons. MLG shouldn’t be the only group or person to change your mind.

Don’t get me wrong, I -Yoinking!- hate this game, but the competitive aspect of it would have been the one thing which kept me playing. I travelled the country to compete in Reach tournaments, so don’t tell me I “don’t have a brain of my own” when it’s the competitive side of gaming which keeps me hooked. Halo 4 has killed my love for the game, a love which was kept strong even throughout Reach’s lifespan. With no competition, there is no reason to play.

You are right, and I do have my reasons for not liking the game, one being that the game in terms of competitive play is effectively dead, MLG was a hope to bring some of that back, which in turn would of made me want to play the game again.

Now, correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t 343 announce a skilled based ranking system to be added after the start of the new year. Doesn’t this change things for the competitive community?

I do. That said, this pretty much squanders the hope of an MLG playlist, which was pretty much the last hope of me enjoying Halo 4’s matchmaking system.

I’ll stick to customs from now on.

Have you been paying attention for the last year. Almost all the people who said the game sounded like crap have said the game plays like crap. The only thing we are saying now is we were hoping MLG could make a competitive play list and save Halo 4 for some players. Now that’s done the population will just drop into the 30,000’s.

Of course “I know you will reply I don’t care as long as I can find a game I’ll be happy”. That’s true and once all the good players have left the bad players like yourself will finally be considered good. The only problem with that is if the population drops that bad Microsoft won’t support Halo 5. Of course at this time that would be best, just let Halo die before they ruin anymore then they already have.

Except it is a waypoint ranking system, not in game. It has no effect on the skill of the players I am playing. I will not match up with better opponents, or opponents around my skill level, I will continue to match up against opponenents who give me the opportunity to hold a 3.8 K/D ratio.

The number means nothing in this regard, as a worse player could have a higher number, but could consistantly get bad players.

Here’s an example.

I have a 40 (lets just say it goes from 1/50 in terms of ranks.) and some other shmuck has a 50.

Now, the number dictates he is the better player, but in reality he is worse than me. So how did he get a fifty? He played worse players than I did. He could consistantly get terrible players, and I could consistantly get full teams, and so the number would dictate I am the lesser skilled player, even though I had a much larger challenge.

The number means nothing if the in game does not back it up.

As much as if think it’s ridiculous to entertain a notion like that, from a strict business standpoint, you are right. I never thought of it that way.
