Weapon "Tells," Love 'Em or Hate 'Em?

Some Halo 5 weapons have “tells,” indicators to players that you have a power weapon (lens flare from sniper rifle, red light on Hydra, light on end of shotty, etc.). Personally, I am not a fan of this. I understand it’s there for balance, but I think it gives too much away. I don’t recall this being present in Halo 3 or Reach, and I didn’t play much Halo 4 but I don’t think they were in that game either.

But what do you think? Should they stay for Infinite or be removed?

I’m fine with them staying though there are some that could be toned down a little like the beam rilfe.

Yeah, Beam rifle is the worst. I’d be okay with toning down all the long range ones. Shotty and hydra are okay

The Sniper and Beam Rifle could be toned down a tad, but I personally don’t mind the Shotgun flashlight indicator.

Well, the flashing indicator, at least for snipers, discourages camping and hardscoping, and alerts your targets to evade incoming fire, which promotes quick action when using the sniper. In short, it makes sniper rifles require more skill to use efficiently. So the real question is: Do we want Infinite to be as competitive as Halo 5 was?

I like them, personally. I mean, let’s be honest, I’m already dead as/before I see the light against good players. But it gives away position for anyone just camping out in a random spot in BTB.

For the shotgun, you just have your other weapon equipped while you camp, and switch-shoot at the right time, just saying.

I can see them being toned down though, like only seeing the sniper/beam rifle glare at a narrower angle.

They probably won’t tone that down since the tells were implemented as a benefit for competitive play. The ridiculous obsession with e-sports these days means every multiplayer game needs to be as competitive as possible and the tells serve as a great feature to further that.

I just don’t think they are needed. The the gulf should between “power” and “normal” weapons should be so wide as to necessitate them in the first place.

I really disliked the lensflares on snipers. For one it didnt make sense that a future sniper rifle with older models not having a lens flare would now have a new version that does, and the other faction versions are supposed to be even more advanced. Though the binary rifle should have one given it literally glows and its a 1 shot kill.

In other weapons like flashlights and such, i would rid of them too. The flashlight hasnt been useful in later games and its weird you cant turn it off.

As for the “skill” aspect to it. Campign was idiotic even on older games given after some shots people knew where you are, sniper is a long range weapon but you should still change positions to use it to its full effect.
Also its a sniper, snipers dont run around talking feces to other players. They pick their targets without target noticing you or getting yourself killed. You dont just run to basically give the sniper to enemies.
Both ways are just out of character and idiotic tactics, the campign and the running.

As for other weapons like shotgun for example, its a low range weapon fit for sneaky type of mobile gameplay.

Im not making a full weapon list here but generally i dislike the lensflares and lights in Halo.

I want them removed. I thought games like Reach were perfectly fine without them.

Edit: Spelling mistake

The learn curb when it comes to Halo 5 is steep, maybe they will make it competitive yet some many it easy for newcomers to understand

I agree, what I especially don’t like is the lens flare when you aren’t even looking at the sniper.

Yeah the lens flare is the worst offender in my mind. If nothing else, it just doesn’t make sense. I know canon doesn’t dictate in-game weapon traits but it breaks immersion when I see this ridiculous flare on a sniper rifle from 500 years in the future. Give the VISR system some type of high threat marker when you SmartLink or something, if they really want weapon tells.

I am on board with this as well.

I like weapon tells, specifically the sniper lens flare. In modes like war zone and btb, where snipers can hide in all sorts of nooks and crannies it gives the opponent player a decent counter play ability. The other weapon tells mostly convey what weapon they are holding, but don’t offer much in counter play. I’d rather they keep weapon tells.

I echo this statement. In reality all the weapon tells do is require the weapon wielder to be more skilled with their usuage.

Seems pretty trivial in the grand scheme of things. It’s not like it was hard to tell which weapon someone had in the first place. Just more visual noise as far as I’m concerned.

I like the tells, speficaly when i see that glare and they miss the shot on me, it makes the game more intense

I think at close ranges yes they should appear, but for extended ranges no. Perhaps it only appears if your looking right at them and their withing the RED REDICAL rather and only just being in point of contact.
