Is it just me or do so many of the weapon sounds seem similar to each other?
I was watching this video;
The DMR, pistol and plasma pistol all seem to have the same “base” sound to them.
In fact, many of the sound effects of Halo 4 remind me of someone dropping a toolbox.
Update: Watching the video again I have come to the conclusion that these must be placeholder sound effects. Try listening to the video without watching it and maybe you will see (hear) what I mean.

They all sound completely new to me, but if they was “100%” different then they wouldn’t really be the same gun would they, they all shoot the same as the original versions, which is good, otherwise it’d just be a new gun with an old name.
Perhaps I wasn’t clear. I am not comparing the sounds of the DMR, Pistol and plasma pistol to how they sounded in previous games. I am comparing how they sound compared to each other in Halo 4.
Personally, I think the sound is one of the best improvements so far. The Ghost sounds like what I imagine a ghost would sound like. As for the weapons, I think they are great.

The Carbine and the Plasma pistol just sound so wrong… and the Ghost… it’s terrible. Why change for the sake of change when the old sounds were just fine?

They’re changing alot of things that didn’t need to be changed, CTF being a prime example.
The only weapon sound that really annoys me at this point is the gravity hammer. sounds more like its pounding nails than crushing skulls with 1000 newtons of pure G-force.
The rockets are a bit awkward, but the explosion it makes afterward makes up for it.
the reason everything sound similar is that the composer for halo 4 is more into the electronic and techno sounds, unlike marty who was into breathtaking choirs and analog sounds. Everything is more robotic and futuristic sounding, and have thus have little difference from one another by themselves.
I prefer the more brutal and believable sounds of the past, but their not all that bad.
Halo 4 looks brilliant so far but what I don’t like about the production is how 343 are changing iconic things. Fair enough they want this to be “their halo game” and it’s a start of a new trilogy but that is no excuse to disregard the games history.
The UNSC weapons sound decent especially the AR, I mean there’s not much to argue about rifles and pistols we all know what they sound like after years of playing FPS’s and they sound solid in Halo 4 but when it comes to the Covenant weapons they really dropped the ball and I’m very disappointed. The Carbine, Plasma Pistol and even the Gravity Hammer sound pretty awful. The worst one for me is the Plasma Pistol because its famous “HUMMMM” is so renown and 343 have just tweaked it so much that its pretty unrecognizable. Even the Gravity Hammer lacks the sense of Power and Strength as they replaced the booming sound effects with a high pitched metallic twinkle.
I’m going to reinforce the fact that I can’t wait for Halo 4 and I love what 343 are doing with the game but I really think they should think twice before altering iconic elements of the franchise too much. Half of the Covenant weapons don’t even sound like what they should or what they look like. Still looking forward to getting my hands on it come November.
