Weapon Slings

Spartans need slings. If you look at pics of any military/paramilitary personnel you will notice that there is a cord of plastic or fabric that tethers the weapon to the combatant. This serves to prevent the loss of the weapon in the event of stressful situations, I.e. Falling, getting into a scuffle with the enemy, explosion, etc. TRue mjolnir has magnetic attachment points, but really, how many times has chief or the Spartans from Spartan ops lost their weapon? It’s unacceptable. even child soldiers in somalia have them. And for good reason. To say slings are obsolete is to say holsters for pistols are too. Many would argue it would slow/tangle a spartan in combat; I will counter by saying a real soldier would never give up his rifle in the field or trust his life to any unproven weapon. Slings have been part of military training doctrine for hundreds of years…and will continue to be for hundreds more. I know it doesn’t work in Halo, but it’s a small touch that would bring a little more realism to ultra-disciplined super soldiers.

A Spartan is a soldier that constantly needs to adapt in the field. I can say from personal experience that a sling is more trouble than it’s worth, especially in close quarters where hitting someone with the butt of your rifle becomes a pipe dream. A Spartan needs to be able to pick up any weapon in the field and with a sling that’s just not a smooth transition and a sling can cause injury, if you fall while holding your rifle and you land on it, it will suck trust me. Slings have pros and cons like everything and while a sling would prevent a Spartan from loosing it it would hinder more than assist. And one last point, while all military forces use slings you don’t actually use it in a combat situation, while the rifle still has one on it you don’t wear it in a gun fight so if you were knocked down by an explosion you’ll just drop your gun anyway.

The Spartans and standard infantry are from 500 years in the future, They use magnets now.

Also the video game is fictional. Saying that it should be realistic defeats the point of it being a game.

True, but there are a lot of forces out there that can depolarize the magnetic system. Heating, hammering, jarring and alternating currents in sufficient magnitude for instance. And Spartans are no doubt exposed to these conditions on a near daily basis. Plasma weapons, explosions for heat; explosions, blunt force trauma for hammering/jarring and electrocution, plasma, planetary/installation atmospheric shifts/instability. You might say the system is shielded…but yes, (eye roll) ultimately, it’s just a game.

Well in a lot of comics, books, and videos. A lot of soldiers have slings. They use them when they do not have access to the magnetic clamps
