Weapon Idea: Hardlight Tether

Hey once again people of Halo Waypoint.

I have come to present to you an old weapon idea that i posted for Halo 4 nearly 2 years ago, an idea that could alter the way vehicle combat works from the foot soldiers point of view. I hope that a reimagined look for it, taking my ideas and other fellow waypointers from that thread, could be considered to work well inside the next main Halo game.

The weapon itself: The Hardlight Tether.

This weapon would not kill in the conventional way, making it more of a support weapon than a power weapon.

The Hardlight Tether would be a forerunner based weapon that basically acts as a harpoon.

You have to charge the weapon for a few seconds while the power builds up, and when you fire it a beam of hardlight shoots out, connecting with anything it hits and stops it not quite dead-think a dog tied to a leash on a post, that can’t move more than the leash allows. Here’s an example from Black Ops to give you an idea of the functionality: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m2wiBBm7FV0

This “post” would be an anchor of hardlight that would be dropped, rooted to the foor, when the weapon fires. This anchor would not move, but could be destroyed by any weapon-and when it pulses with energy, it’s grip on the hardlight would break, and the tether would be broken. If another tether was deployed, it would destroy the old one.

The tether could spear a banshee for example, and i quote, from a fellow waypointer who said it better than me:
" Vehicles like banshees could be virtually unaffected if they fly slowly in a big circle as their momentum wouldn’t tear them apart, they would just be tugged by the hardlight harpoon/anchor. Then they could return to destroy the player, and the anchor and fly away. However, if the banshee came in to kill the player, you could anchor the banshee within a 15 meter radius, and as soon as it goes to shoot the anchor, you can board it. If a banshee was fleeing harpooning it would cause its momentum to rip itself in half."

As the length of the tether wouldn’t increase once it hits the target, any vehicle would destroy itself if it tried to break free of it by moving further away and was going too fast, like a noose round your neck, but it could swoop around within the radius of the tether, to try and free itself by destroying the anchor.

This could also work on players as well. Rooting them to a radius around the anchor until the anchor, or the player is killed. Hit them in the back as they sprint away and it will kill them through their own momentum.

It would only allow one tether at once, so unless there were multiple tethers, there would be no way to anchor more than once vehicle at once. However, if there were two tethers, they could come intertwined and spin around like a swingball until they crashed into each other, or somebody abandoned the vehicle.

This could also work in reaching new places in the environment, by creating a bridge to walk along. It would create new ways to get up high without a jetpack-although if it would break gameplay mechanics limit it to just vehicles and spartans.

It would really open up team work to take out the vehicle or spartan once tethered, and on the other team people would scramble to break the tether to keep their vehicle and team mate alive.

So, with that being that, what do people think of the weapon, do you think it has any potential? Discuss.

Tis a unique idea but this suffers from something that is kinda sad…it seems a tedious weapon to not only use but have used upon you.

Its not powerful enough but if it were anymore powerful I feel it would be WAY too OP so there is a problem here on top of that it almost seems since (if I am reading this right) it would be a sort of hassle to use.

I just don’t think this could work…I really applaud your thought and effort on this idea and it truly is unique 10/10 for that. (the thought that is)

It’s an interesting idea. It seems like it’d be easier to make it work as Equipment than as a weapon, though. IMO if you try to make it a weapon, you run into some issues…

  • It would probably be outperformed (at destruction, anyway) by a sniper or rocket launcher, so it might not work well as a power weapon.

  • It’s too powerful to be a mid-tier weapon, since it allows one player to singlehandedly stop even an undamaged vehicle.

  • If you nerf it and treat it as mid-tier, then players might not see much value in giving up a directly-offensive gun to use the tether.

…But if you make it Equipment, then you can keep the full effect, you can balance it out (since Equipment only gives you one shot per pickup), and it’s less likely to be seen as a “rival” to more directly-powerful weapons. Plus, it’s a quirky and weird idea with some unusual uses (e.g. helping another player hijack a Banshee), so it’d probably fit very well as Equipment.

Yeah, the more I think about this, the more I like it as Equipment. It could probably be used for some pretty imaginative Custom Games, too.

Exactly what I was thinking.

I’d brace yourself and put your flame suit on OP…posting a Black Ops vid here is gonna provoke a reaction or two =p
