Weapon/Death Effects

For halo 5, I think it would make the game really come alive if 343 spent time on weapon/death effects.

This is really a continuation from halo 4 with the promethean weapons causing players to disolve, but what about other weapons too?

  • Plasma based weapons could leave plasma burns on the armour
  • Fuel rod cannon could have a slight acidy-disolving effect on the armour of the dead
  • The rail-gun could leave electric sparks flying off where the projectile hit
  • Needler could leave fragmented needles (after supercombine) scattered around the body.

What are people’s thoughts on this idea? Also, do you have any other ideas for other weapons?

For example: a plasma weapon that hits an opponent’s arm when said opponent has little health remaining, will be subjected to fireworks as it quickly burns away into the ash from which it originally rose - trying to put the fire out from what remains of its arm, while suffering third degree burns, as it swings its arm crazed-like, all while pleasing the gamer with screams of tremendous pain.

if that causes lag they really failed on xbox one or the game engine.

I’d be fine with something like this as long as the effects aren’t unnecessarily gruesome. That wouldn’t fit Halo.

The things you listed, OP, sound cool. I like the Rail Gun idea a lot.

I think another one would be from the Spartan Laser. When a Spartan is hit by it, the armor where they were hit will glow a hot red.

Edit / side note: Maybe make this only for the power weapons? I think having it for loadout / utility weapons like Plasma Rifles would be too much, and I like the idea of power weapons being all that more special.

I would like to be able to have this KIND of thing as “Kill Effect” for your armory 2.0, similar to reaches customization. but you can get your headshots cause purple disentegration or something, that would be fun

Not really. The Rail gun and needle effects need not last very long. 5-10 seconds max is all the time it really needs, maybe even that is pushing it. As for Plasma burns they should remain on the body for as long as the player remains on the field (i.e. until they de-spawn). I’m pretty sure thats not a very big ask. And finally, the fuel rod gun effects are unnecessary, to say the least. They are, in essence, instantaneous anyway. Players screaming from plasma burns while conscious could be possible, but i doubt 343i would do it for online. Campaign maybe.

I loved the Battle Damage on Batman Arkham City and it would be neat to see a lot of this in Halo.

I’m totally for this. If they can make it work without sacrificing performance, it would really add to the game to implement more effects like this. Another thing that would be cool is small bit of armor falling off after the kill. Not full on gibbing or anything, just a few specific parts on the model that look -Yoinked!- up or break off a little bit, cracked visors for headshots and such.

It would make it feel more obvious that we’re hitting a metal suit when we shoot a spartan, especially with more metalic-sounding bullet-hits, and bullet holes to show that you punctured the suit once the shield went down.

For hitting shields, I think it would be cool if there were sparks flying off, like in some of the early Halo 4 multiplayer footage.

I’d also like a more interesting and clear visual effect for Promethean/forerunner shields, as is, it’s a very light shimmering blue with no sparks or patterns running through it.

Haven’t seen you post in a bit Elite Bob, but I like all the ideas you listed. Maybe have armor on fire after a rocket launcher.

Like it! I am all for it. This sounds exactly like the kind of thing the next gen hardware should be able to deliver on, too.

That sound like an interesting idea and would seem visually pleasing.
