Well yeah, camos are just gimmicks and doesn’t have impact on game play but since they are introduced in Halo I think we shouldn’t forget about them. Or if we have to, just talk about them for a few minutes.
Now, Halo 4’s weapon camo system is a disaster IMO. You have three or more “versions” listed of the same weapon while the only difference is how they look like. It makes the U.I. horrible and looks ugly. I have a maybe bit more complicated method but first we have to turn backward and take a look at Reach’s U.I.
Now, there were an option in Reach, called “Player”. There you could set up most of the “gimmicks”. I think weapon or even armor camouflages could be put in there.
There would be a menu called “Camouflages”, then there are two separate sub-menus. One called “Weapons” the other called “Armor”. There you can adjust camo for all the weapons, each of them separately and take one camo for your armor.
Now armor camos could unlock with ranks or commendations, and camos are in sets. Once you unlock one camo, it’s available for every armor. Unique camos for armors does not seems bad but it’s too difficult to unlock them and they usually have ridiculous requirements.
Weapon camos could work the same way. There are several camo sets, which are unlocked with ranks or specific commendations like beat-downs or head-shots and can be equipped for every weapon. You can unlock several sets with it, but there are camos which are only unlocks when you use the weapon. Weapons have commendations which are have different levels. Each level you complete gives you a new camouflage. (Note: Those camouflage are the same for every weapon.)
Commendations should be optimized for each weapons. Requiring 1000 kills with a BR is easy, but it can be painful with a Suppressor. Do not mention the Plasma Pistol mastery. I think, commendations should count how many damage points or hits did you made with the weapon, not how many kills you get with it. Keep things balanced.
Note: If we does not have loadouts, then only your starting weapons will have camouflages. The weapons you spawn with.
