> I honestly would respect them saying, “Hey the MP, most important part of a Halo game, is free. Maps and modes and weapons will be free. Content don’t grow on trees, we need to make money.” It wouldn’t excuse removing a series expectation like color options, but I’ll take that over the bizarre spin that removing player choice is somehow a trade up to greater expression. That is the most glaring of all this, and a huge red flag into their studio culture.
Just came here to say I don’t like what you’ve shown so far 343. You don’t monetize colour-choices like it seems you have. That ain’t it chief.
What’s next? Black and white screen only, unless you purchase the ultra-mega-battlepass-BS for ONLY $29.95/monthe, that makes the game run with coluor again?
I don’t even know what to look forward to with this game. There has just been so much bad news and very little good news. 343’s instance on staying silent is certainly discouraging too.
It’s just going to be a Destiny clone and I have a hard time accepting that.
It’s truly incredible how almost every detail that actually gets shown of Infinite is met with terrible backlash. My hype for this game died ages ago, it’s pretty disappointing to be a Halo fan. Thanks 343!
Is there a reason why 343 can’t let us pick the specific colors on these coatings while retaining everything else about them? Like, with the Red Shift coating, why couldn’t I have control over making the red section navy, the gray section bronze and the black section silver if I wanted while the default for that coating is the one we see now?
That way these coatings would be more like patterns with a texture overlay and we can color the different zones whatever we want. I’m not keen on the idea of shoehorning Destiny’s shaders into Halo. Is this the sort of thing that could be changed in an update down the road?

Absolutely 100% this. The way they have handled it, especially with “clarifying” that they are taking away our expression in lieu of something they’ve decided is better for us even after all of this backlash, speaks volumes about how much they actually give a -Yoink- about our input.
Here’s the deal folks. Armor Coatings as they exist are ridiculous and how 343 thought it’d be a good idea boggles my mind. However, you can make bad choices without being actively malicious. Rarely have I ever felt 343 hates Halo or its fans and even now I don’t see this as an act of actual malice. Perhaps cynical? Maybe, but I doubt they went to the drawing board with the thought of “How can we hurt our fans?”
In the end, the deciding factor for Infinite will be how it plays. It will depend on if the campaign is good and if the multiplayer is enjoyable. My Spartans color choice isn’t going to have a big impact. That said, I’d keep up the pressure and be honest I’m not buying any coatings at launch. Hell, refrain from any promotions while we’re at it. I’m not buying Monster for a coating.

You people keep suppressing everyone’s concerns because you know damn well that you made a greedy decision to revoke player choice. Now you flip flop on which thread is “official" by locking and unlocking others? Get real 343, it’s a simple fix that you’re choosing to stay silent on; stop trying to copy Destiny and give us Halo.

One of my biggest issues over the years with 343i I’ve come to realize is that they tend to replace features in Halo rather than add to them.
Honestly, I think a lot of problems would be solved with them giving us all the features from old games plus the new features they’ve come up with. Instead it seems like they try to replace a classic gametype or way of playing with their new thing, hope people accept it and then when they don’t, they bring back the old thing like it’s some new amazing feature when the old thing should have remained there from the start. Examples: Firefight, big team battle, classic weapons, split screen, a working theater mode for both multiplayer and campaign, the ability to save films in theater mode instead of only saving through the xbox DVR, armor customization, and now color customization…

That’s right, they are suppressing concerns despite outrage over the coatings is widespread literally everywhere people talk about Halo.
Why are we being redirected to this thread? I’m all but certain we have all the info we need, the “7 layers” referred to in the blog post reference internal artist assets, not any sort of mix-and-match system. The communities biggest issue is not with how skins might be earned (though there are plenty of concerns there), but the fact that players lose out on a feature present since this once-great franchise’s birth, in favor of a monetized system at the mercy of 343i’s aesthetic tastes, which are, well, the less said about that the better.
Put plainly, it is another dime-a-dozen, restrictive skin system, in what is looking more and more like another dime-a-dozen free-to-play shooter, and all of 343i’s typical, characteristic corporate speak is designed to distract and confuse people away from this fact, it’s frankly insulting.
Hopefully these armor coatings won’t be selectivity locked under an RNG system and disregard any merit; I would hate to see armor coatings be given out in a way like the REQ packs, random, random, and random.
343, listen. Just make some kind of basic primary-secondary color system. Like, 13 colors for both primary and secondary. Maybe red, orange, yellow, dark green, light green, navy blue, light blue, pink, purple, brown, white, black, and gray. At least. This satisfies the fanbase’s desire for classic color design but will still drive players to unlock those precious armor coatings. I mean, I know I’m no professional in the video game design industry, but after what I’m seeing in the fanbase right now, this seems like the most reasonable compromise.

Since my thread got locked, I will post it here too. We need classic art style. How can anyone say they are providing us a classic art style when the majority of guns 343i showed off were changed entirely rather than improving upon the iconic look of weapons such as the shotgun, magnum, etc. Now we have less customization. 343i are deceptive conniving liars. They say they care but there has been such little communication between them and the fans to get the newest halo experience done right. They just want to do their own thing, which would be fine in that regards if they were telling everyone that. Development of halo should become more open with the community. Give polls, do something the community requests of them.
I even think I “jokingly” claimed that colors may become something we buy or unlock in future titles with how customization went for halo 5 back in the day.
I feel ashamed.
Now with Infinite, we get skins and normal color customization is gone?
The same thing as with Halo 5’s first emblem versions? Which got so much backlash that they patched it to be like it was before?
What a shame. The game was shaping up to look fantastic. Finding out about coatings makes me feel less excitement for the game. Micro transactions have ruined the best of games, as the entire system is designed around the purchasing model.

2 steps forward. 4 steps backward, down a hole, and into a fiery inferno.

That made me think about this. There are some similarities, no?
