I find comedy in the thought of having to make a separate coating entry for every color/material/placement combo.
Black primary on the body with red secondary on the arm
Black primary on the body with metallic red secondary on the arm
Black primary on the body with camo red secondary on the arm
Black primary on the body with blue secondary on the arm
However many color combos later…
Green primary on the body with red secondary on the arm

THIS, 100% this.
I mean this is the reality we’re looking at when we look at a system like this! If you’re the type of person who went in expecting the primary/secondary colour system you have learned to expect from Halo and you find this preset system in Infinite, next thing I would wonder is “does this colour combination system cover every possible combination?”, because if it does not, then it makes you wonder why people are praising it so vehemently.
And it makes you wonder, why did they switch to this system? Why switch to presets?
They’ve said it’s going to be free, everything is going to be free, and whenever you criticize this system, someone tells you “it’s free it’s free it’s free, no paywall” .
Ok but if it’s free, then why was it structured this way instead of just having the primary/secondary colour system? Does having it in this shader format make it better? Well, no, because we have gone round and round explaining in this thread why it’s not as good, because the importance of player choice of individual colours is no longer present. This new system looks more akin to a Destiny Shader system and that comparison is no mistake, because people picked that up instantly.
If it’s free, then we have to now question “why does it look like this? Why does this system look like a monetizable system if it’s not?” Them completely omitting the old system was no mistake, they planned and implemented this knowingly, the question I’m left asking myself is “why? Why have this system if it’s free and it’s not going to be monetized? Why have this system when the old system works so much better, and twofold: in order for this new system to be as good as the old system, you have to do all this meaningless work, why would you put yourself through that?”
It’s said to be this great new system with so much potential and sometimes it’s even argued that it’s better than the old system, but I’m only left with questions when I connect the dots.

So what you’re saying is there should be no advancement or changes to the system of 2 colors? Literally, that was the best option to ever be created and nothing should ever change that? Also, why every single color combo possible? Do you go through and check with red as primary and every color combo with that, then next orange as primary, etc?
What’s wrong with a new system for a new FTP game? There will be plenty of free options that can be chosen at launch or earned. There will be plenty of options that can be purchased. If you are wanting everything for free, in a FTP Multiplayer game, that just isn’t how it works. Arguing about it becoming FTP for the multiplayer is entirely a different discussion.
I have always enjoyed changing my colors or armor customizing, but if you think about it, when do you see yourself? Briefly before a match, briefly at the end, but you’re mainly watching your dead body ragdoll across the map. You don’t spend hours staring at yourself like you would in a third person game.

Have Coats be color customizable.
That’s the improvement which should’ve been made to the old system.

What’s wrong is that i343 deliberately made a sub-par system in order to intentionally bloat the item pool with close to identical items and have the players grind through completely arbitrary items, and thus incentivize buying the coats.
When they could’ve had color customizable coats for players to toy with themselves. Color Customizable coats they could’ve sold, keeping the colors free.
You know, only the colors, not “eeeverythiiing for freee”.

So why even heavily monetize character customization then?

No, I’m not saying we shouldn’t advance at all. Defending the old system does not mean I automatically think No Advancement At All should be made to the Halo colour customization system. That said, I fail to see how this system needs to replace the old system entirely. A 2 colour customization system allows for as many colour customization options as would be allowed by how many colours they add to the system. If you need proof, go back to every Halo game that gave you the option give a primary, secondary, and sometimes tertiary colour scheme. You have the freedom to input any colour scheme within the primary, secondary and tertiary thresholds, and that allows for so much more player freedom in the way they wish to customize their spartan. This is a good segway into my next point.

Yes, I do. It may sound crazy, which I understand, but it IS important to some people to know that Halo retains a system that’s tried and true and one that nobody complained needed to be removed or replaced.
You may think “Why does anyone NEED Red primary with Orange secondary, or Black primary with Blue secondary, nobody uses those colours anyway” and I think you’re missing the point by thinking that. The point being that: With this new system, you lose the freedom to pick whatever colour you damn well please without needlessly waiting for the devs to add your favourite combination. People like me want that freedom to be able to choose those colours, instead of having to choose between a set couple of shaders that may or may not have the combination you want.
It does not matter if the Halo Waypoint forum statistics say that 0.0001% of the community uses Orange for primary and Blue for Secondary, player customization should not stoop so low as to only favour the ‘popular combinations’. Anyone was able to choose whatever combination they wanted in that system, and now, with this new system they have to choose from a pre-ordained sandbox, and wait for their favourite combination to be released later, if at all.
You just can’t remove that freedom, because that system is something we, as players, took for granted. Why almost everyone forgot the importance being able to choose your colours and which combinations you want? I don’t entirely know, but it is the very reason that we have to have these community debates.
Half the community thinks the old system is garbage because “who even uses Pink primary and Brown secondary anyway”?
The fact of the matter is, we stand for that system staying and instead want it being Built Upon, NOT removed entirely.

I think I might have mixed up our intentions for maintaining Halo’s core customization with thinking they’re going to be chargeable. I made that point a little confusing so I understand why it can get muddied up. I’ll revise my statement by saying:
by being against this new system I am not being woefully naïve to the fact that FTP games need to make money. I am not saying Halo Infinite does not have the spiritual right to have microtransactions. The idea of Halo becoming free to play is a different subject (as you say) so I won’t go any further there.

This is an interesting way of looking at it, but it’s also incredibly subjective, because I do not agree with this sentiment at all. I do respect you for having that sentiment! Because you provide that viewpoint in the mixing pot. Everyone should have a chance to speak, and we definitely need to have these conversations, otherwise we wouldn’t be human. That said, I firmly believe that, just because the player only sees himself at the beginning and at the end of every match does not mean that player customization means nothing, or even that it means any less if you compare it to a third person shooter. It’s important universally, because why even have armour then, if you only see yourself at the beginning and ending of the match? Why even have any customization for anything except your forearms and hands? It’s subjective because, to me, it’s quite obviously a necessary feature that the player be given the ability to customize his entire spartan to the fullest extent and freedom, notwithstanding the fact that it has been this way for 20 some years **because that system works.**The way I see it: I wouldn’t care if I only saw myself once every match, customization is integral to the full enjoyment of my spartan. I spend hours just scrolling through the options, seeing what perfectly fits together to make the spartan that I like the most. I care a lot about that because, to me, that is a huge part of the game.
I’ll try not to repeat myself but:
Preset colour combinations allow for only what colours that the devs choose to allow. The old 2 colour system allows for any combination of colours that the player chooses. What I think you’re trying to say is that we’re being too unreasonable for wanting every single colour combination possible, and to that I say:
I think that point is underselling the value of a system as sacred as being able to choose your primary and secondary colours.
The new coating system, unless it meets that threshold of allowing for every single colour combination possible, will never meet that level of colour customization that the old system once gave us, and that means something. Both to me, and clearly a lot of people. It means we’d be tossing away a core system (one that we think is better) and replacing it with one that, plainly speaking, is more limited a system than it’s ever been before.
Moreover, I just cannot see why coatings cannot exist alongside colours. Why can’t both systems exist? It would seem shaders would provide a much needed leverage of customizability for those who would equip them! Why we do need to choose between our children?
Why do I care so much about customization? because I -Yoink- love it, and I think it’s part of Halo, so it would hurt me, like so many other things that have been removed, to see it go too. Especially when it could exist perfectly alongside the new content we’ve seen.

>
> Your earlier example too about them consciously removing the old system and replacing it with this new, inconsistent one is prevalent. Realistically, they should not have removed the old system. Instead, they should have just had both systems, if they were going to have a coating system. Preset combinations of colours will always be inferior in terms of player choice because unless you can have every single combination of colour schemes represented in a gargantuan list of preset coatings that already exist/will exist in the future, then your system has 100% taken a step back from what it used to be and it should not be praised as something new with so much potential.
>
> There IS potential in this system! There is, because now they can make new preset colour designs which, to my knowledge only existed depending on what armour you wore in previous games (in Halo 5, different armour variations had different colour designs). With how its being introduced, it looks like having different armour variations just to have different designs will be a thing of the past and now you can apply different designs on any armour you want.
>
> But that small bonus is completely overshadowed by this pointless flood of work they now have to do to make this gigantic list of preset coating combinations to suffice for the amount of colour schemes we could have in previous games…
> Why would you, as a developer, put yourself in a place where now you have to make almost 1000 different colour combinations just to make this new system work?
>
> UNLESS of course, we are now implying that they will not be making 1000 different combinations, and instead will just be pretending like this system is somehow better than what we used to have, which is crazy, cause it’s far from it. Ever since we started taking options away from the player cough cough Halo 5 ENTIRE TORSO, CHEST DOWN UNCUSTOMIZABLE , we’ve run into this problem.
>
> The armour customization in Halo Infinite looks fantastic! Huge improvement compared to what 5 did, although 5 was a step back in terms of player choice from previous games, nonetheless Infinite looks great.
> It’s just sad that we had to slip up on something as innate as primary and secondary colours…
Logically, all they had to do was give us a color wheel system for every armor piece. Its not that difficult, jesus even EA sports games offer color wheels.
I could probably go on a rant about how dumb the destiny shader system is (let’s be honest here, we all know that’s what this is), and how this is all done for the sake of microtransactions (hi Anthem). I’ll just say this; GET YOUR SH*T TOGETHER 343! If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.
It’s disheartening to see people defending 343 taking away a feature that has been standard since Halo 2 back in 2004.

I guess the 343 era captured a different audience that is willing to put up with this -Yoink-. Nowadays everyone thinks microtransactions are a necessity. Its even worse with Tom Clancy. Most Tom Clancy ‘‘fans’’ today have never played a real TC game. At least Halo Infinite looks like a Halo game… but yeah sad situation indeed.

Like I said in an earlier post, I don’t mind armor coatings being behind microtransactions (as long as they aren’t locked behind loot boxes), as long as you still can choose the primary and secondary color of your Spartan and all said color options were available for free.
Pretty sure they only reworked this system so they can sell fancy cosmetic skins like in Overwatch, Destiny, Call of Duty: Warzone, Apex Legends, etc. This is undoubtedly why they changed team games from Red vs. Blue to Red Outline vs Blue Outline.
I just hope that they fully commit to the “microtransaction cosmetics” thing!
I want Beats By Dr. Dre headphones!
I want a giant gold chain with a “Chanel” logo!
I want to run around as a character from an upcoming movie ONLY IF I purchase a special meal at Burger King by using their official app and it’s only available for a limited time!
I want the entire cosmetics system to be packed to the brim with more delayed gratification and earning fake currency by performing mundane tasks than Animal Crossing!
I want an installation size so big and bloated with cosmetics, I need to buy a second Xbox Series X for more expansion slots, and loading screens that take a day and a half!
If they’re going to go trashy with the whole cosmetics system, go FULL trashy! None of this half-way “oops, people are upset because of the pixelated explosion deaths” silliness!

Sorry, got carried away.
Their willingness to change the system depends entirely on the community’s response to the system. Halo 5 launched with pre-set color combinations for Emblems, no one liked that, and i343 eventually changed it to the normal mix and match, as well as adding more colors.
Of course they need to go positive with the revenue when they went F2P, but to think/suggest that pre-baked colored coats is what keeps the game afloat is absurd.
They’ve got a ton of items available to sell already
-armor permutations
-prosthetics
-visors
-assassinations
-stances
-armor effects I understood were coming back
-battle passes.
-AI stuff
-voices
-Announcers?
To that list some of this could be added as well
-Battle Pass XP boosters / levels
-Player XP boosters
-Coat patterns if they were color customizable
-Keep vehicle, weapon and player coats separated if they aren’t already and sell them individually.
Could add other new stuff
-Weapon effects, like different explosions for explosives, muzzle flashes for weapons, colors on plasma and so forth…
-Weapon models, different types of models for weapons, but functionally they’d remain the same.
-Equipment effects
-Map skins for the maps you play on
-Weather effects
They didn’t really come up with a way to earn money, they lazied out.

just wanted you to know they already confirmed you can buy batlepass levels,
Yeah. Some more transparency would definitely be appreciated. I played the tech preview and noticed that we couldn’t apply different armor coats to different pieces of armor nor could we change the color of the coats in anyway.
It was just a tech preview so the game was definitely not final, but we don’t know what range of customization options we’ll have access to regarding coatings in the final product.

i343 stated color customization is out in a small segment when they talked about the for the first time.
As far as the “tech preview” goes, I doubt we’ll see significant changes to anything if there isn’t considerable feedback on it from the community.

it also seems like if you dont want to buy, you have to go through a similar system to halo MCC where you can only get so much battlepass xp a day/week, but that may be up to change. thats just how it was in the flight.

On one hand, it seems just like the thing they’d implement to incentivise purchase of levels and individual items, as an artificial stopper, which seems likely for them to have. But they’d motivate it with some entirely different excuse of course.
On the other hand, it does feel like something they’d have in a technical for some reason.

best we can do is wait and see if it changes in the following flight(s), were you able to get in the last one?

But as you well know it’s very very unlikely for them to change such a massic mechanic in-game so close to launch it just ain’t going to happen. No game is perfect Yes we got good armor customization but the Coatings leave something to be desired. Fact is they had to come up with ways to earn $$$$ with it going F2P.

How does that work ? I missed that being confirmed.
