The flight is great and all. But I really missed the player expression of choosing colours

To everyone who said classic colors would get put behind a paywall: SUCK IT

It should be noted, though, that the technical preview has 11 coatings that would qualify as “basic colors” (and which are unlocked from the start).
Halo CE and 2 had 18.
Halo 3, Reach and 4 had 30.
There might be more in the final game but at the moment this is still a step backwards even from Halo CE, but especially from the later games that let you mix and match.

I don’t remember anyone making that sort of statement. Also, only a minority of players use basic colors for their entire armor. Most people want to mix colors as they please, which you clearly won’t be able to do. Its pretty obvious that many cool color designs will be blocked behind paywalls.
Almost every flaw that was discussed heavily months ago are present in the test build.
- Lack of variety. - Lack of actual choice. - Horrible interface. - Interface will get progressively worse as more skins are added. The only thing we don’t know yet is the actual cost, but just based on how they are now, I can’t see them being good on that either.
This honestly really sucks because I actually enjoy the gameplay, but it’s being severely hampered by some bad UI choices as well as this major backwards step in customization in what is really just a soulless cashgrab (specifically this is on the monetization practices).
They did an 8 min showcase of customization just a few days ago and in that showcase they didn’t mention armor coatings even once. If 343 was really confident about this feature being player friendly, they would have no problem talking about it. The fact that they’ve been avoiding the topic for months is quite telling. They know this system is dumb, they know its not for the players, they know its only to make money. That player first PR speech is false. Its profits first and players second. We’ll only know how bad the monetization is at launch and beyond.

Another reason 343 could not be addressing the “problem”, especially during testing stage. is that the main priority they have at the moment is getting you and I the players a game to actually play. Things like color coating are far easier to change later down development. I do agree I am one of said player that would like to choose every color on my Spartan not presets. The armor coating sounds exactly like shaders from destiny. Please don’t do that to Halo infinite.

Halo 5 for example Had 3600 free colour combinations. I doubt that 343 will make a free coating for each basic combination.
Armor coatings should be another way to customize your Spartan, not a replacement for traditional color customization.
Guys, it was a very small slice it was the first technical preview they aren’t going to show us all the coatings they have for us. They will obviously have all the basic colours then variants etc.
Lets wait till the game releases. Coatings are here to stay we are being given some of the best customizations we have ever seen from what it looks like let’s wait and see how the coatings turn out for all we know it could just be as good. Differen’t doesn’t always mean bad.

We already have enough details about armor coatings to know its at least going to be a worst system than what we had. Wait for what exactly? Its so obvious that they’re going to lock multiple coatings behind paywalls. How can this kind of system be as good or better? How can it be better to pay for armor colors rather than having them for free? I’m willing to give 343 the benefit of the doubt gameplay wise, but not for monetization. I will wait and see how fun the game is, but I will not wait for launch day to criticize their business model.

They’ve also said there would be thousands and most of them can be unlocked through gameplay means. So yes some will be behind a paywall they are cosmetics this game has gone free to play. could it be worse? Yes, but we don’t know that for sure we are only surmising. There will only be some on the store it won’t be the vast majority and they said that in the stream. Its gone F2p this is the tradeoff get with it or move on. Me I am going to wait and see.

Thousands? In the plural?
Got a source?
Then again, if there’s going to be thousands, they could easily have made the coats color customizable to begin with and saved everyone a lot of trouble.

It being F2P is no excuse not to offer feedback. It’s no excuse for i343 to make worse customization features than they could either.
So, you’re gonna wait and see.
Then wait and see, and then wait and see. When the final products hit our faces, you’re gonna tell everyone that it’s the way it is now?
Wait and see what exactly?
If the coats are color customizable? They’ve already said they aren’t. And if they magically make a 180 on that, it won’t be due to people telling others “wait and see”.
So, when’s the proper time to offer feedback on stuff?

The last game in the series had over 3000 2-colour combinations from the get go though. No unlocking or paying needed.
At bare minimum they should have a free coating for each 2 colour combination, since many of us have had the same combo in all games.
But I feel like it’s pretty clear that we won’t get that

Especially since there are dozens of other opportunities to support 343 through micro-transactions that doesn’t involve taking control away from players. Halo’s been experimenting with purchasing addons for 16 years, with 343 being involved for 14 of them, they should have a relatively good idea on how to monetize and support servers for free players by now.

Waiting and seeing doesn’t mean you can’t offer feedback. But as you well know it’s very very unlikely for them to change such a massic mechanic in-game so close to launch it just ain’t going to happen. No game is perfect Yes we got good armor customization but the Coatings leave something to be desired. Fact is they had to come up with ways to earn $$$$ with it going F2P.

I don’t care for the F2P argument. I think its a dumb argument. The multiplayer should’ve never been free to play to begin with. This is only an excuse for monetization and you guys are taking the bait so easily. It won’t be the vast majority? Jesus I hope so, otherwise 343 would be digging their own grave. I don’t care if its 10 armor coatings that are behind paywalls or 500, we shouldn’t have to pay for armor colors… at all. For them to suggest that we might have to pay for this kind of stuff is like spitting on our faces.

Why not? It’s only like paying for character skins in other games. The coating is the skin. I am not going to sit here and defend the monetization of the game. But I am a realist I accept things for what they are. I leave my feedback and that’s the best I can do. If it’s a deal-breaker for me then I would refuse to play the game. I care more about functionality and gameplay as opposed to cosmetics. Don’t get me wrong I like armor pieces and grinding them But I would never pay for anything. I think the basic coatings from the previous colour palettes and their variants will be unlocked in game. ITs more likely there will be rare ones on the store.
I wouldn’t mind armor coatings being behind microtransactions (as long as you could buy them directly instead of only via loot boxes, as I hate loot boxes), if we are still allowed to have access to the ability to color our Spartans for free. If I want to color my Spartan as white and dark purple (just an example), I should be able to without paying any money.

Your earlier example too about them consciously removing the old system and replacing it with this new, inconsistent one is prevalent. Realistically, they should not have removed the old system. Instead, they should have just had both systems, if they were going to have a coating system. Preset combinations of colours will always be inferior in terms of player choice because unless you can have every single combination of colour schemes represented in a gargantuan list of preset coatings that already exist/will exist in the future, then your system has 100% taken a step back from what it used to be and it should not be praised as something new with so much potential.
There IS potential in this system! There is, because now they can make new preset colour designs which, to my knowledge only existed depending on what armour you wore in previous games (in Halo 5, different armour variations had different colour designs). With how its being introduced, it looks like having different armour variations just to have different designs will be a thing of the past and now you can apply different designs on any armour you want.
But that small bonus is completely overshadowed by this pointless flood of work they now have to do to make this gigantic list of preset coating combinations to suffice for the amount of colour schemes we could have in previous games…
Why would you, as a developer, put yourself in a place where now you have to make almost 1000 different colour combinations just to make this new system work?
UNLESS of course, we are now implying that they will not be making 1000 different combinations, and instead will just be pretending like this system is somehow better than what we used to have, which is crazy, cause it’s far from it. Ever since we started taking options away from the player cough cough Halo 5 ENTIRE TORSO, CHEST DOWN UNCUSTOMIZABLE , we’ve run into this problem.
The armour customization in Halo Infinite looks fantastic! Huge improvement compared to what 5 did, although 5 was a step back in terms of player choice from previous games, nonetheless Infinite looks great.
It’s just sad that we had to slip up on something as innate as primary and secondary colours…
