They really need to clarify what can and can’t be done with the coating system soon, and I really hope that someone has an epiphany and changes their mind before its too late.

It’s pretty crazy to think anyone at 343 thought this would be a good idea. Like how do you think removing personalization adds more option for people? Unless they add in changing the colors of the coatings, this system is just anti-fan.

Honestly not happy with this, if I cant select the individual colours I want and have to grind to be able to get blue and white that’s ridiculous.
Keep up the conversation. Make sure your voices are heard. Waypoint forums, Reddit, Twitter, etc.
The ONLY way for us to even have a slight chance at changing this terrible anti-player decision is to be LOUD about it. Look at what happened with EA’s Star Wars Battlefront II. That game had an absolutely terrible system, and due to fan backlash, actually bent the knee and made changes that seriously turned the game around.
We can do the same with 343i and Halo Infinite if we just keep fighting back.

thx lol
Oh great, another thread. As I said in the other one, there’s quite literally no justification for such a restrictive design choice like this. There are plenty of other customization aspects they could (and have!) choose to monetize like weapon skins, visor colors, and the like. Removing a fundamental part of player customization that’s been a part of Halo since Combat Evolved in 2001 isn’t innovative or creative, and sure as hell isn’t something to be excited about. It shows a fundamental lack of knowledge about what their player base wants or likes. Or, at the very least, they’ve chosen to forsake that for… money? Either that or they’ve decided they know better than the fans - the ones who pay for and play the game.
Despite how little I cared for Halo 4 and 5, I was genuinely excited to see what 343 was going to do with Infinite. I even liked some of the stuff they’ve shown so far. But if this type of -Yoink- is going to make its way into the game then I think I’m just done with it. Jokes on me for getting my hopes up, right?

For future reference now that your a marine rank you should be able to use links with the chain icon in the text chat toolbar.
I’m disappointed, I don’t know why they did this. They should’ve expected this backlash but hey, hopefully they’ll listen and change it before the game launches.Look on the bright side, at least the game didn’t drop and we figured this out day one…
I’m sad that we are going to be losing our individuality as result of this system. This logic has just made you guys shoot yourself in the foot with this decision…
Not happy at all
Based on Halo 5 Guardians and seeing that there are 60 color options, I expect 3600 color permutations of shaders… People will have to grind, scroll through 3600 different permutations to get and choose the color combination that they want. when they can just choose from a set of 60. This is ridiculous. This is definitely a new low. Who suggested this? Who approved of this? When did the fans ever ask for this? They aren’t limiting creativity, they are monetizing it. Are we not learning the mistakes from other game companies? Are we just trying other companies failed ways of making income and saying “we can do it better”?!? Why in the world are we taking a step backwards? Why can’t the monetization happen on like visor colors, vinyl armor skins like camo or graphics designs, or armor effects, or just textures alone… You could have also done visor textures too. The visor could be cracked, scratched up, or have a sick etching. The lights that are on the armor can have a different glow color. I would not care if it was emblems either… But really… Color. That is low.

Y’all actually locked the bigger thread.
If there’s a clear upset by the community, the devs need to know.
Why lock the post to begin with, that one had far more traction.
It’s clearly for micro transaction bucks. I will not be purchasing Halo Infinite.

What I hate, is that we likely wouldn’t have known about the existence of armor coatings for a long while if people hadn’t discovered the Chips Ahoy promotion and asked for a higher quality image. Really hoping they break their silence sooner rather than later.
im very worried about what color combos are even going to be available. how many of us are going are not going to be able to use the colors we want because the combo isn’t even in the game? since the coatings are in the game now and that isn’t changing, 343 needs to take a look at the previous games and make sure there are coatings for every possible color combo a player may want.
this was a problem in destiny 1. my colors of choice have always been yellow and purple. destiny 1 never had a shader with that color scheme, so I had to settle on combos that I had no interest in. now I worry that this will be repeated with the new coating system.
an idea, and I don’t know if it is too late for this to be implemented, but just want to find a possible way to soften the blow and turn it into something manageable. at launch what if everyone has access to a list of combos (every possible color combo) but these coatings are the most basic versions (like a standard blue and yellow one). then there would be more unique version of each combo that the player can get, these would be the microtrasactions (imagine a blue (or any other color) version of the red-shift coating).

They better write one good of an apology letter to the people who’ve been playing since 2001. This is an abomination. I’ve been in it since Halo 2. Back when they had actual color selection.

It doesn’t. It just adds more personalization to your spartan. Besides, there’s no real reason to remove an extremely basic feature that made its debut in Halo CE. Also, what will machinima creators do? Screenshot artists? It’s needless and annoying to a ton of people.

It also immerses people, even if we don’t see it in BTB or 4v4. So what? They are monetizing and restricting our freedom and creativity. Bungie embraced this and expanded upon it and then they went to crap. FFA, Halo Reach Campaign, Firefight, Spartan ops, Warzone Firefight is where we finally saw our creativity.
So we’re gonna have less customization than we did well over a decade ago…
Microsoft should’ve let Halo die after Reach instead of giving it to this "company"
Now that I have thought about it, Armour coatings are still a massive step backwards with this. However, I feel there is a single way for Infinite to recover from this. I feel if they add the coatings as skins, and the players still have the ability to customize the colors on the coating. I love how it seems like each armour piece can be colored too, but I feel this would have been better with the classic color customization. Now, even if you are able to change both the primary and secondary only, I still would be okay with this.
Now, I have seen a lot of people compare this to Destiny, and I can 100% say there similarities from what we have seen, but Bungie and Destiny implemented shaders, they had a bunch of them to earn easily. However, until we get more information on how these will be implemented, I feel this will be a detriment.
As for Slayer and Red Vs Blue Gametypes, Im not sure how they will be implemented

> Also, in the past, new modes and maps were DLC. It split the playerbase. Now those are free for months or years after a games release. Would you work for free? Didn’t think so. Cosmetic mtx are a necessary evil.
In my opinion this is a flawed, but understandable argument for coatings that, most importantly, considers the labor of the developers and argues that they should be compensated fairly and not “work for free,” like you said, and the burden is on the consumer to make that possible.
That said, I think the logic is flawed because when you consider the 3rd-party in this scenario, Microsoft, and how the flow of capital doesn’t jump from the consumers’ pockets into the Developer’s. Rather, it goes Consumer $ (paid in the form of DLC, microtransactions, brand deals, etc.) → Microsoft $ (profits earned from gross sales and brand deals after offsetting labor+production costs) → Developer $ (paid in the form of salaries for labor).
As is the case with a ton of other “provider” models, our money doesn’t flow to the people directly responsible for producing what we consume (music streaming is another good example). Instead it flows through a parent investor and intermediary (Microsoft) who likely uses a lot of that Halo $ to invest in the next Kinect or motherboards or some other -Yoink- unrelated to Halo or even gaming. And since Halo has historically been an extremely lucrative IP, Microsoft sees an opportunity to have a steady stream of capital to use to try and bring back Zune or whatever, instead of spending millions on a one-off investment and, though profiting, profiting at a much smaller margin than if they forced 343i to incorporate regressive cosmetic policies and a F2P multiplayer model.
TL;DR — it’s likely Microsoft forcing either these specific changes or setting financial targets so ludicrous that 343i is forced to do it themselves. It didn’t used to be like this, and it doesn’t have to be this way now; but it is.
