Or would you prefer to have colors behind a pay-wall? I personally would prefer for colors to be locked behind a pay-wall.

It doesn’t necessarily mean the skin itself will be $5 in Halo. That’s part of the problem, people speculating based thigs they don’t fully comprehend. We need to wait to get the full story before complaining. If it ends up being a horrible system, I’ll be first in line to be upset, but so far I have no reason to be angry. Concerned, maybe, but angry? Come on.

The assumption about the REQ system was simply to be used as an example. I was using it as an analogy since many people on this forum are familiar with it. I didn’t mean to imply that the REQ system as we know it is returning. The concept of “average retail value” is the thing I was attempting to explain because I’ve seen a lot of people taking this $5 “price” literally.
As for why we can’t have both armor coatings and the old color system, it’s been said that the reason is simply that that’s not how the game was built. They opted for the coating system to give the developers an easier way to produce a wider variety of skin options. Implementing two different systems into the game to achieve effectively the same thing is a waste of time and resources. I think we’ll find that the coating system isn’t as bad as people think it is right now. Theoretically, they could release coatings that cover the entire spectrum of color combinations available in the current games - which would solve everything.

They designed it that way to monetise it imo, still not a compelling reason not to have the existing system. I’m sure they could still have the base colour system in conjunction with it. If anything removing base colours is less options.
Theoretically why go to all that trouble when we could use the existing system ? Nothing to solve that way.

They made a conscious decision to not build the game to work with custom colors for these skins.
There was at some point a meeting where they went through customization, and the decided that coats should not be customizable by the players.
> 2533274843634673;507:

Yes, the variation being one skin with different colors. When they’re stuck in the creative process they open an existing skin and change a color or two.

> Implementing two different systems into the game to achieve effectively the same thing is a waste of time and resources.
Implementing a system to allow us to customize skins is player freedom. Maybe it’s a waste of time and resources for them if their objective with this whole “Coat” mechanic is to make us pay for things we’ve had before.
> 2533274843634673;507:
> I think we’ll find that the coating system isn’t as bad as people think it is right now. Theoretically, they could release coatings that cover the entire spectrum of color combinations available in the current games - which would solve everything.
Theoretically yes, however that if anything would be a waste of time and resources on their part.
They’d save a lot of both if they just allowed us to customize the colors of the skins ourselves.
See, if you have two color slots, and 10 colors to pick from, you get 100 different variations, that’s for one skin.
Throw in 10 skins, and suddently you’ve got 1000 combinations.
Maybe this is why they never had a beta on Xbox One, maybe they knew there’d be fury over this. (The game releases on the One as well so a beta would have been easy.)
I think this is it. Battlefront 2 vibes I’m getting here and this will push new players miles away and annoy and frustrate the halo community “reach like customisation” but that’s just telling you what you want to here changing the colour primary and secondary system is just a major unnessacary risk and this pay wall barrier now will finish 343 off they are constantly shooting themselves in the foot. I hope they turn it around because I love halo and this really is just painful to watch fold out.

If they left the existing system in place, then once you acquired “your colors” you’d be less likely to contribute to the pay scheme. (NOT AGREEING WITH IT, JUST ANSWERING POINT 1). IE: What if a coating comes out with your colors…you’re going to get it. now lets say another pattern with different areas textured comes out with that same color pattern and you like that more…probably going to buy it. just using the ‘you’ as a metaphor for consumer
343, I’ve was raised playing Halo and it has always been my absolute favorite game series ever! I still hope that you will stick to your word and bring everything that has made h
Halo HALO into infinite. I am how ever worried that the game is going to be destroyed for me as a true halo fan by Micro transactions. When I heard that we as players would have something like halo reach customisation for our Spartans I litterly did a back flip. But now I find out that each color is going to cost $5. Your reason for this is because of all the work that is put into the game it’s actually worth is a lot more than just $60 is actually more like $13,000.
I agree. But even if you rounded your actually cost to make the game to $15,000 you would only need to sell 250 game to get your money back. You will sell 4 X that in the first week of the game being released. From a true and devoted Halo fan please don’t ruin the game of my dreams. Thank you.

Unfortunately I don’t see new players hating this as much as we do. I saw someone say this and it pained me from how true it was: “This game is not made for us, we are not the target audience. Their target audience are the new young players, not us oldtimers who have been around the franchise from the beginning” Though this doesn’t mean I’m not gonna fight tooth and nail with how anti-consumer 343 is being. Honestly I blame them more than Microsoft given how pro consumer they have been with every other xbox brand related title in this new generation… though HW2 and Gears 5 did have horrible MTXs too, so who knows for sure I guess?

I feel like whoever threw those numbers out there was just reaching/trying to justify the decisions being made. i saw it somewhere else too but come on now…tell me im getting $13k game for $60 is just unrealistic. Take that $13k game and go try selling it at that price and THEN get back to me. LOL
lets go into the auto industry…how much the material cost, now the actual machines that do the job, now the people’s hourly/salary rate, tools required, etc. If Ford/GM came out and said “hey look at this new mustang/camaro…we are selling it for $60k but its actually worth more than 10x of the cost of a new Ferrari!” people would LAUGH THEM OFF THE STAGE…i think this particular $60/$13k comment…well they should have stuck to the game-plan of just being hush because it only makes them look worse. especially using that justification…for a videogame mind you. Its a pathetic reach.

> It does however, take us away from whether Coating MTX are ok (because by the proportions of this debate, it seems impossible to answer that question), and brings us to the argument of whether it’s ok that the Developers and Producers decided that it was a prudent decision to move the newest game franchise entry to F2P. Something along the lines of Armour Coating MTXs were bound to happen, no matter what, and I mean it makes sense since the Developers have to have some way to make money.
Yes it is true that 343 dumped money into this game, and they need to monetize things, but to a point it feels like cheating old fans by removing customization freedom. The multiplayer will be free to play only, everything else must be paid for in the full game or downloaded from gamepass. I would prefer not having paid coatings at all looking at how easy they made it to change up colors in the engine (those of you who use game engines probably understand the color palette sliders), and and most I’m willing to go with some paid ones. I hate to say it but it is part of the industry. As long as the best coatings aren’t always locked behind paywalls (like games such as modern warfare) or a ridiculously long grind just to rack up the in game currency to buy them (also looking at modern warfare), then it might be ok.
And 343? Please take note from the fantastic game MCC has become… no main unlocks are timed, no ridiculous long grind, and a game complete and full of features. I’ve always hated seeing the battlepasses contain some of the best cosmetics available, but then seeing ANOTHER price tag for the BP.
Your right brutal vengeance battlefront 2 is was more pay to win I mean like replacing something like the personalisation of our Spartans or elites like you said yourself. It’s kind of panicy though because we don’t know how this coating system works and who knows it might be better but 343 needs to communicate a bit better and show this new coating system off a bit.
This post isn’t about coating but it is referred to. So I’m posting it here regardless, so I apologise in advance for talking rather off topic. I’ll try and refer to it more heavily so that seems relevant to the conversation because it seems impossible to make any new posts about it here.
I know since the delay it would of course take a week or two to reassess how the timeline should be. So it’s understandable not to hear much during that time.
Now we are currently a few months since the reveal and so far the marketing has consisted of;
Merchandise and promotions via in game reward codes
Implementing a new system in relation to those reward codes in lieu of a fan preferred system.
Im not saying I’m necessarily right or maybe I’m off the mark. But the above information should have had a proper reveal and in-depth discussion. In terms of being more solutions focussed their needs to be a revision of how news is announced and revealed in the future.
For example;
first step, give as an idea or roadmap to give us some indication of something to look forward to. This is so that we don’t keep getting stuck in content droughts with nothing on the horizon. It enables a better sense of transparency. Impatience from fans will happen regardless and understandable. We as fans should wait patiently. But this is compounded by waiting literally months for only negative news and no positive incentive or elaboration whatsoever. This has left fans speculating and if you front-load it in a negative way the following speculation most likely follow the trend.
your next step should be alleviating the concerns that are currently present. Perhaps a full in-depth video that shows how they work, what they look like in terms of selection, and discuss how micro transactions play in all of this. Then directly show why the coatings system gives more desirable options than the previous system. It needs to be proper answers, not the whole “the answer to the questions are in the news that don’t answer the questions, I hope that clears that up” response.
then you can move on to things like different aspects of ideas on the game. What is the new forge going to offer? Confirming what old modes will be retained in this game and if there are some not making the cut, give us a good solid reasons why (there are of course obvious modes that should not be missing)
Anyway I’ve said enough, I don’t want to say too much more off the coatings topic to make my post “not allowed” or anything. In summary; give us a map for the future or general timelines, more transparent, gives us reveals the proper way. It’s not the end of the world at the moment, but there isn’t anything to indicate anything positive at this time. Sorry for the essay, if anyone else has thoughts feel free to respond and share your ideas.

You’re ignoring the fact that it has been explicitly stated that they chose this path because it gives their developers more options to make more and better armor color variants.
See the answer above: It makes things easier for them.

I can almost guarantee that’s marketing speak, because they can’t say “Look you idiots, we took this away so you could give us money because we like money” - I understand that it makes it easier for them, but if the system wasn’t shoddily coded and designed, then we could still have free color customization without having to accept only the designs 343 gives us. - Unyshek’s thread doesn’t answer the critical question of how much customization is paywall locked and how much isn’t paywall locked. Unyshek’s thread raises a lot of questions as to how this system works in practice and how we’re going to get these skins. He should be providing substantially more information on this system. If 343 did something that wasn’t this, we wouldn’t be upset at it. If they gave us any more information than the bare minimum because they knew they were tossing a live grenade into the open, the response may not have been so vitriolic. But when you restrict player freedoms that have been in place for at least 16 years, that’s a serious problem. When you attempt to lie about it and say “Well, the system just can’t accept player customization” when we know that even games with messes of engines and code can make it work (PAYDAY 2’s engine is a nightmare, and it can support what 343 claims is impossible), that’s when we start to take umbrage with the system.
If 343’s Infinite Dev Team were just a little bit more transparent about this stuff, the response may not have been as aggressive as it was. As it stands, bar the death threats because the people sending those are Grade-A Lunatics, the response has been what 343 deserves. They don’t deserve our faith in their products because they have yet to put one out that doesn’t have some problem, and they don’t deserve the benefit of the doubt because of how bad Halo 5’s REQs were. Even worse was the response then, when anyone with legitimate complaints against the system were depicted as childish buffoons that should have stayed quiet because “the grown-ups are talking”
I’m skeptical of the claim it gives 343 more options to make new color combinations. Who asked for that, exactly? Was there a movement among fans to shift the burden of being creative with color combinations to the developers? Did we ask for options to be taken away and become more restrictive?
I mean, yeah, if you look at Bungie’s shader system in Destiny they sure do pump out a bunch of options. But it also creates a glut of shaders you will never use that take up space in your shader inventory AND require using up in-game resources to get more. Again, Bungie has produced a lot of combos, but I can’t recall anyone ever saying they liked this system.
At the end of the day, my creativity now depends on 343 and what they decide to offer.
