We want more info on "armor coating".

How about “can we get old colorings back?”

hopefully 343 sees the comments and thinks ok lets rethink

Pretty good discussion between HaloFollower and Sean W. Regarding the armor coatings, microtransactions and possible Omen of things to come. Their overall discussion seems pretty on par with what the community here has already said. Its hard to get through the amount of “bro”'s Sean says. It reminds me of being in the Infantry again using cuss words as adjectives, verbs, nouns, pronouns, etc.

Here

we need to ppick our own colours not have presets

Have you all seen Ascend Hyperion’s video recently about how armour coatings can actually be a GOOD thing? I found the video well done and extremely persuasive. I am fully on board that armour coatings are going to be a really cool new tool, at least until we hear more details

Can’t wait to jump into custom game with our “unique” Spartans. Can’t belive halo is just becoming a destiny knockoff. I’ve lost complete hope in 343 with this horrible decision they’ve pulled. What’s next? Have to pay $5 to play one online match? Have to pay $10 to get the mark 6 armor? What scummy thing are they gonna pull next? They’ve ruined our colors with one simple decision. It’s gonna be like Halo 5 all over again with the armors but colors where we have a huge list to choose from and most of them look like garbage except for a handful of them and everyone uses them and no one feels like a unique spartan. Can’t wait to pay $30 for an all red coating or something! Good job 343 at turning your fans against you even more!

Everything indicates that this Halo is being marketed for the mass’. People who are jumping into Halo for the first time arent going to know any better. They really are going to cater to the current generation of gamers. I think just about everyone can see this coming.

What’s the point of even having these shaders if 99% of the time your Spartan is going to be red or blue?

I don’t like it. Wtf 343 this is too far.

A large game mode that is free for all that will make it easier to show off your Spartan and to fuel the sale of monetize items.
Could be early idea to add to a possible Battle Royale mode, new large zombie game type, or left field attempt to copy Parasite (TTT or the modern incarnation Among US).

That or the player armor will be the template for campaign (like Reach) which could be a possibility given the become the chief vibes the newer trailers give. Or maybe something a bit new of having the non host be their multiplayer Spartans if Coop isn’t gutted from the game. That is also assuming that the three other players are not Chief clones or Blue team/Arbiters and Friends/Alpha Nine/Crimson/new people or Osiris.

I think this whole coating thing is dangerously close to destiny shaders…and I honestly don’t know how to feel about it. As long as you don’t have to buy ANY of the colors I guess that’s ok I just hope that 343 listens to the community and finds some middle ground.

Because the Multiplayer will be Free to Play, they’ll monetize the game by selling shaders for real money, most likely.

No one should be surprised about this. Free multiplayer + huge development cost = every single thing in this game will be monetized. Even stuff no one asked for like weapon charms. Probably be able to buy different tire tread patterns for the warthog or some other goofy thing. I can see it now “Buy a pack of Oreos on the 2nd Monday in December in Canada for the Oreo hubcap skin”. They will exploit people’s fomo tendencies to the max. Might as well get used to it.

This is exactly what I’m worried about. It turning into Fortnite and losing the entire immersion factor

I swear, if they do that stupid “Oh, its a simulation!” Crap AGAIN for this campaign of all things… I am so sick and tired of 343 saying that everything is a simulation, that we’re just reliving stories instead of actually being active and a major participant in them. This crap is the canon reason we don’t have Elites playable in 4 and 5, because some idiot decided that Multiplayer should be canonized as a simulation.

I’m not necessarily opposed to coatings. If there is a basic set of coatings that everyone gets of normal colors that would be a good step forward. Seeing how 343 seems to be pushing that lack of variety will not be an issue I am hoping that a fairly large (but simple) variety of color combinations will be available for free, with all of the unique coatings like the Gamestop one needing to be unlocked.

If we can mix and match and players have a good amount of colors to start out with (like 30-40), no one will have a problem with this new system. Then maybe we can stick to these cool sets with pre-determined shades like Red Shift which has a bunch of different colors going on while also being able to create our own patterns.

I think all of the negative sentiment seems to come from people trying to put words in 343 mouths when that doesn’t make sense to do. Like this OP on this forum is essentially saying “Woah woah woah. 343 didn’t explicitly state that they would give us colors to work with by default. I think that means they won’t let us do that.” When any rational person would see the post and assume that yeah, that’s probably the case. I have no idea where people are getting the idea that the color green is going to somehow locked behind a paywall. The hivemind at work, I guess. For example, consider a game like MW, where every gun has a unique set of customization options with the skin, stickers, reticles, etc. with the option to simply unlock a really large amount of these options through gameplay, or the added caveat of getting particularly unique skins through MTX. A system like this is what I immediately assumed was going to happen. I guess I just give 343 the benefit of the doubt? I don’t know why you wouldn’t here.

It just seems like overreaction for the sake of being upset and I feel like it’s largely a waste of everyone’s time to make this much conjecture about it.

You’re really telling me you don’t like MW’s gun skin customization?? I had thought it was the actual best of any shooter to date. To each his own, I suppose.

Obviously the Armor Coating topic has not been well received by the community, for more reasons than one. This is why so many others have said 343i does not have the benefit of the doubt from the Halo community… because their track record with the franchise since 2012 has been riddled with questionable decisions. I’ve been playing Halo my entire life from CE-H5. Halo CE through Reach literally laid out the blueprint for one of the most successful game franchises in history, regardless of the studio in charge, and 343i insists on reinventing the wheel any chance they get. From a fan/consumer perspective over the years, it’s been really discouraging to watch. I also understand that games need to progress over time- we don’t need a reskin of Halo 3 over and over (unless…??? lol), but why insist on constantly changing the proven fundamentals (especially with the outcry from fans)? The Halo community is practically begging 343i to listen to them. Don’t take this as 343i hate, we want you to be successful- we’re on your team!!

Good for COD. Not for Halo.

I’ve considered what this new coating system means for a lot of long-time Halo fans, and why it’s so upsetting to have the two-tone color customization removed. For me personally, I have an emotional connection to the series.

Halo CE was one of the first PC games I had as a kid, and playing it felt almost criminal because my parents didn’t want me watching blood, explosions, and violence on a screen, let alone having control over the character causing the carnage. I always would tell them, “But they’re aliens trying to destroy Earth!” like somehow that changed anything. Multiplayer was really fun because I felt like I had a large breadth of agency over how I played and interacted with other players. Sometimes I would stick with the stock standard AR and magnum, or the shotgun and plasma rifle, or maybe a flamethrower and rocket launcher. I could grab a banshee, fly over to the other side of the map, and fuel rod the enemy base from 100 feet above. Or I could hop in a warthog and me and my teammates would ride around picking off enemy players and swooping in to snatch a flag. I always enjoyed FFA because at the very beginning you spawn in and there’s this tense moment when you think “Okay, it’s everyone against me and me against everyone. God I hope there isn’t someone right behind me.” I really loved switching up my colors between matches, I wouldn’t say I have a favorite color but usually I hover around green, blue-green, purple, and orange tones. The first time I played Halo 2 was at a LAN party and I enjoyed the two-tone color system so much, I tried tens of combinations to find the colors that I was vibing with most. And despite only seeing this small fraction of my armor, it didn’t take any of the fun out of it. I knew that when my friends or someone online saw my spartan tea-bagging theirs, they would acknowledge that I was a -Yoink-, and they would know who I am just by seeing my garish combo of coral and cyan.

I think a lot of fans have a similar emotional connection to these games, and when I try to think about or explain how it effects me emotionally when things are removed or significantly changed in 343’s adaptation of Halo I find myself getting emotional again. It’s as though someone is invalidating my feelings for the old games by being told “no, this is way better than that outdated thing. You will enjoy this much more.” There’s something to be said about how it would actually hinder player creativity, and how the monetization of coloring your spartan could quickly get out of control. Mostly for me it’s about the memory of a beloved game series that me and my friends religiously played together because it was such a diverse experience every single time. The color customization makes up a very small portion of that, but it feels to me like whenever we get news about another feature being removed or replaced, without notice or consideration to the most devoted fans of the franchise, a small piece is chipped away at the base of my love for Halo, and I’m worried that one day it will collapse and I’ll realize that there is nothing left of Halo that I have an emotional connection to anymore.

To conclude this exhaustive rant, I’m going to put out one suggestion that I think would- at the same time- give fans the ability to choose colors as they always have done in previous games, and a way to navigate around the problem of integrating a two-tone system with the armor coating system. Players who bought Halo: Infinite’s campaign will be given a special coating, maybe as a product code or an item you receive when loading into multiplayer the first time. This coating is just a simple arrangement of two different tones that is usable on any armor set, and when selecting the coating you will have the option of changing the two colors in any combination from a list of 30 colors. It might not appeal to everyone’s interests, I know a lot of people were excited at the idea of being able to change colors within the coatings themselves, but I think this would be a serviceable way to give fans something they’ve come to expect in a Halo game on top of the coating system which could still be very appealing in and of itself for newer Halo players and long-time fans. I want this game to do really well, it kind of has to at this point. 343 plans on this being a “10 year journey” of a game. So it’s either going to be the best Halo game we’ve had since Bungie’s games or it’s going to be a big flop, and that could spell the end for Halo. I see so many people jumping ship, saying “This is only the beginning. The microtransactions and Fortnite players will bury this game.” But I hope that we can rightly give 343 a little faith to listen to the community and decide to change things because our opinions really matter to them as a game developer. So I would encourage everyone to keep up the conversations and be constructive in your criticism, as well as come up with reasonable solutions for them. It could reach someone who can make real changes to this game’s development.
