We need to talk Halo community..... what are we going to do about sprint?

When you take a modern FPS, the ability to sprint is almost always present. There is nothing special about it. It is a basic function and makes perfect sense for those twitch based military fps games. Until very recently sprint has been absent from Halo. Now that its here, should it be here to stay?

I have seen a few threads talk about why it should stay and then arguments break out about why it should go. But here you will find my personal opinions on the matter as well has some pros and cons.

First of all this discussion is about sprint and sprint only. i would appreciate the other armor abilities remain out of this discussion as there are many threads based on that topic.

In my opinion, Sprint should not be in Halo 4. People need to take in to consideration that Halo 4 will probably have faster movement speeds, and it would make sprint as an included function obsolete. More than once I have seen people say that sprint should be included in the game as a permanent function and can be used in conjunction with the other AA. This should not happen.

In most FPS games sprinting is used almost exclusively on getting places faster, as it has no use in actual combat do to the fact that in most games killing someone else is very easy and does not require a lot of shots. When you add sprinting to Halo’s gameplay, it adds a very frustrating problem. In Halo, because there is a degree of skill involved in taking someone down, sprinting gives the other player a very easy way of just getting out and running. In past Halo’s, if you were to get suprised you would have to react. You would have to bounce a nade off the wall to keep them back and maybe jump down to a nearby ledge, or heaven forbid turn around and try to out shoot them. With sprint, as soon as people start getting shot at, they make a b-line with sprint the opposite direction. It isn’t game breaking by any means, but its just something i don’t feel like Halo needs. Especially if it is to be included by default and will always be with the player.

Not to mention the fact that sprinting just isn’t Halo. It doesn’t need sprint to get around the map faster because you already move pretty fast, and the maps are all fairly small and movement is very easy. And in the large maps there are vehicles and again not really a reason to sprint.

But I realize that I am just one opinion, and clearly some of you feel like sprint should be in the game one way or another. Because I am willing to compromize, I think i have developed a solution to the sprint problem.

I believe that in the normal playlists, AA/E should spawn on the map and be pick ups. There can be other playlists with armor abilities you spawn with, and then a classic playlist with none at all. But as for the tradition Team Slayer gametype, they should be pick ups. I’m not going to go in to which ones from reach stay, or go, or new ones to be added. This is a discussion on Sprint after all.

In reach sprint was more like the lack of an armor ability. If you didn’t have anything cool, you could use sprint. In halo 4, i say we make it a full fledge ability called, The Agility Module. Remember, this is a pick up you get off the map. The agility module works similar to sprint in that it makes you run faster. When activated you can not use your gun, and because you are going at a very fast speed, your peripheral vision is blurred slightly. Instead of just running and panting. This armor ability changes the physical appearance of your boots. Obviously it has to look cool, but Isaac Clarke’s boots from DS come to mind. When activated what looks to be like tiny jets go off on your boots and you take off like a bad -Yoink-. Also the sound que for when it starts seems more like an engine igniting ( sounds more like a jetpack to be honest). As an added bonus, the agility module allows you to do a double jump while in mid air. So you can jump once at normal height, then get another 50% boost from the thrusters on your legs.

This is just an example of how sprint can be in the game, while still giving it a Halo vibe. I realize most hardcore players wouldn’t like this, and i completely understand. But just know that there is always going to be a playlist for you. There will be playlists where maybe you spawn with the AM, others you might have to pick it up, and in playlists for the most resilient of Halo fans, No armor abilities at all.

I could go on, but honesty, its up to the community. Do you think it needs to stay? Or should it go? Or maybe…you like my idea, where it is a pick up.

DISCUSS and play nice…

Sprint breaks gameplay. Therefore, no, it shouldn’t be in the game long term.

I’ve been stuck in a similar dilemma when considering what I’d want to see in future Halo games. I basically agree that all AAs should be pick ups (or never appear again), but then I think about how useful I find Sprint in Reach and it makes me think I may miss it if it were taken out completely - even if the base movement speed is increased back to the standard level of previous Halo games. This is exemplified in the current MLG settings, which utilize a faster movement speed more reminiscent of previous Halo games, but with Sprint added as an extra. I have to say I like these settings and I wouldn’t be against something like this continuing to make an appearance in future Halo games.

But it’s a very difficult quandary which will require some deep meditation and rigorous playtesting by these new developers. After months and months of playing Reach I have certainly still not come to any final decision in this area.

I don’t want sprint in Halo. I just want the same run speed of Halo 3 or faster and we call it good.

I have been with Halo since I first played CE, and I never really had a problem with movement speeds. Honestly, I dislike AA’s a whole. I think they take away a chunk of what Halo has been so far. I will now lay out my opinions in a flat, and for the most part, unexplained way, just for the sake of time.

-I don’t think Halo 4 should have AA’s.

-I don’t think Halo 4 should have a buit in sprint function.

-I don’t think Halo 4 should have ANY AA’s available as pick-ups. This including sprint.

-I would like to see Halo 4 show strong ties to the gameplay feel of Halo 3.

I believe it should work like this, if you have been shot, your ability to sprint should be cut, until you have full shields again then you can sprint.

It would stop the running away when near-death.

Get sprint out. It does not belong in Halo.

> Get sprint out. It does not belong in Halo.

understandable.

just let us run faster so we can reach objectives pretty fast

Dear 343,

People have faith in you because Halo 1 and Halo 2 were great games that we will never forget.

People are skeptical of you because Halo 3 did not live up to its predecessors, and Halo Reach is a catastrophic disappointment.

Please, please, please keep this in mind. Stick to the true Halo formula. Increase movement speed so that we can lay the whole Sprint nightmare to rest.

Sprint would be cool. If it breaks canon then I wouldn’t really want it in. I don’t see how it was an AA in the first place.

I really don’t want sprint in Halo 4, but if they must have it, I hope they atleast have some playlists with faster movement speed with no sprint.

All very good points. But I do have one suggestion:

Maintain the ability to use features from Halo Reach as Custom Options (AAs, Loadouts, etc.) and in the case of Big Team Battle include Sprint as an ability you spawn with.

This would allow custom games to continue to include some aspects of customization Reach offer like Classes, and abilities, without breaking the gameplay of standard multiplayer. And who knows? Some variants that USE these custom options may become present in certain matchmaking instances and very thoroughly enjoyed.

I’m sure some players will create game variants with reduced movement speed and sprint active, and make great fun games to play with their friends.

I posted in another forum along the lines of this and this is what I said:

I believe that sprint should not return for small arena like maps, however I believe that including sprint in BTB and Squad Battle (6v6) would be welcomed because there is very little areas to run away from action and it would allow for infantry to move back into action faster.

nice topic.

im for sprint being across all playlists in halo 4.

there is 1 exception, however.

if sprint is implemented properly it takes AWAY from gameplay.

to implement sprint properly, you should not be able to simply run away using sprint at the slightest hint of danger.

if you are running, and you receive damage, you should IMMEDIATELY stop sprinting. you will then be unable to sprint until 2 seconds after the last bit of damage you received from an enemy player (to prevent team abuse).

or, alternatively, make people unable to sprint if they have no shields, or 1/3rd shields, etc.

either of these changes would make sprint (a logical addition to the game) a welcomed change to make the game faster paced, without adding the frustration of watching your kills simply run away because you shot them 2 times.

No AAs and Bloom Pl0x

AA’s and specifically sprint should NOT be in Halo 4. It was welcome to see a change in Reach by including them, but now that we are back with Master Chief I believe we should not change the game mechanics by including AA’s. Halo CEA, Halo 2 and Halo 3 were brilliant because certain powerspots (sniper tower on the pit, etc) were powerspots because you couldn’t just use jetpack or sprint to gain an advantage, you had to use teamwork or have actual skill to gain control of these spots. In my opinion, AA’s were welcome in reach because things like jump height were changed. They do not belong in Halo 4.

Sprint is a hate/love relationship for me. Going back to Halo 3, I miss being able to activate sprint to get where I’m going on foot faster (even though larger maps are sort of set up so you’re either in a vehicle practically the entire time, or there are quick ways to get around on foot, and smaller maps are easy to traverse anyways), but at the same time it adds unnecessary annoyances such as double melee, guys sprinting towards you with a CQ weapon so they can use it effectively, running away from battles slowing kill times more, etc.

I think it should be in Halo 4 because it did add to that ‘speed element.’ Sometimes it takes away kills, but it also provides for a faster-paced gameplay. Sprint is by far my favorite AA. SWAT to me would never be the same if it was taken out.

Keep all AA’s (so long as they are rebalanced) and isolate its gametypes into a part of Matchmaking. Default play should be whatever new mechanic they put in, but the game should have the ability to go to “Classic mode” in case the new mechanics turn out to be a flop and need to be fixed.
