We need to talk about the chat/mute problem

In several places throughout MCC matchmaking — pre-game anonymous lobby and loading screens, for example — it is impossible to know the gamertag of someone who is talking on their mic. Consequently, it’s also impossible to mute them or report them for chat-related abuse, like screaming, racial slurs, etc. This has become a serious problem for maintaining a bit of healthy accountability in the Halo community, and could have a negative impact on many players, particularly younger ones.

There should be no point in time while playing MCC where players have the ability to chat with each other with total anonymity and impunity. It’s too easy for a player to do something like scream into their mics (hurting everybody’s ears) during a loading screen, and the other players subject to their behavior have absolutely no recourse.

Here are some of the areas where I know this is currently happening:

  • Pre-game lobby (where everybody’s gamertags just say “Player Found”) - Loading screens - Halo: CE - Halo 2 ClassicThe fix for this isn’t simply adding gamertag indicators. While that is important, players need an in-game way to mute those players as well. Perhaps this isn’t practical for the loading screens, but in all other spots, this needs to be possible.

I’m putting this in its own topic instead of one of the megathreads because I believe the extent of this issue requires some exploration. I certainly don’t know all the places where this issue is present, but I know some of them. Is this happening in any other areas?

It does need to be like it was before where you can mute offenders in lobbies. I don’t get how stuff like that can be over looked this late in gaming since chat has been a thing. However I will say it’s so rare to even hear people use a mic that odds are they don’t fix this. I don’t even know if they have even ever addressed this or realize this issue. I would love to see them fix it and maybe just maybe more will use a mic. I recently got another mic and it seems like a waste of money in Halo in general since so few use them. Been playing quite a bit lately and can’t recall any one abusing the mics. But the number of people using them is very very few.

I feel like this issue points to something that MCC is missing: the pre game screen.

In the previous Halo games, after you found a match, everyone was placed into that big pre game screen for 10-15 secinds. You could see all the players and what gametype you would be playing. You could talk some polite smack to the other team, and yeah, if someone was playing loud, vulgar hip-hop music through the mic, you could quickly mute them immediately.

Would love to see this area of the MCC see some long-term refinement.

You don’t have a pregame screen because people quit out if they don’t like the game type…

It’s a head scratcher at how this is Master Chief collection and so much has been over looked… the pregame lobbies should be the same, where you can see who is talking and be able to mute them… We should have the party up option after the games as well… But I am pretty sure no one at 343 actually played Halo before Halo 4, if that.
