I would probably never use it, but it would be nice to know the option’s there if I need it.
Maybe go back and play Halo: CE the way I remember, with 3 friends, 4 TV’s, 4 consoles and a crap-tonne of beer and pizza.
You can set proxy to your router in your network settings to emulate a Lan. A work around, however I agree. A simpler Lan mode would be nice.

Good luck arguing against that when Xbox was the first console with Ethernet built in and Halo CE was a launch game

I love LAN parties, we do it almost every weekend =)
but with this new Halo bug collection, I can’t even join to any friend lobby… I don’t understand why 343 needs to verify and authenticate my game…
I already paid for it!!! What else do you need to know???

If you have a small ping that should be due to your own router/modem etc. MS only verifies that youre an xbl member, when joining only players in the same LAN it will not send data beyond your own hub. Or at least thats what it should do
