Ways to Surprise Players in Infinite?

Surprise isn’t the biggest thing in Halo games, in fact it rarely happens, but when it does it creates some of the most memorable moments in the series as a whole: playable Elites in multiplayer, The Arbiter perspective switch in Halo 2, space combat in Halo: Reach. What things would surprise you if they appeared in Infinite? Would you prefer the surprises to be story-related or gameplay-related? They may not be necessarily good surprises or bad, I’m wondering more of where people think 343 can go unexpectedly.

Playable grunt so you can pilot the grunt mech for one level. Or a campaign mission that functions like forge and you design the map/sections of the map. Any other “surprises” would be killing the franchise.

I hope they do something like the Arbiter perspective and the space mission. Both of those to me were some of the coolest experiences in Halo and welcome surprises for sure. Seeing as they have committed to a Chief-only campaign, I can’t see them doing any Elite missions, as cool as it would be. There has been some discussion about time travel. So, following that theme, I would be happily surprised if they had a flashback mission before the events of Halo CE, maybe with Chief as a trainee or as a seasoned Spartan in the 2540s.

They could also put in pay-to-win lootboxes and/or cash-only cosmetics and sell one or both as “surprise mechanics.” Although, that would really surprise no one and only get players like myself to never touch the game and encourage others to do the same. Any opportunity to mention this, I take it.

Charging $20 for what should be unlockable content, for starters.

Oh, did you mean good ways to surprise players?

Me: “A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.”

SUPRISE MECHANICS!
Pay €20 to play as master chief in the campaign!
Pay €60 to get your weapons and vechicles, else you will be stuck with the reach AR and h3 magnum!

Well, Halo Infinite’s marketing has said that the game will bring “new and exciting ways to play.” Hopefully, this means new game mechanics to Halo and isn’t a marketing buzzword.

Some suprising game mechanics for me would be as follows:

Multiple endings and/or choices to make during the campaign
The campaign allows you to play as two characters (this would surprise me because 343 have stated this is “supposed to centre on the Master Chief”)
Stealth sections
Chances to upgrade your Mjolnir, weapons etc.
A co-op campaign that has Player 2, 3 and 4 play as different character for increased immersion and fun

I don’t think it’s any surprise that most of my surprise mechanics come from Gears 5. I am enjoying Gears 5 thus far and would like to be some aspects of that game integrated into Halo Infinite.

At this point I’ll be pleasantly surprised by a game that has a concise and fun sandbox, an episodic narrative that is satisfying to play by itself (as opposed to one that leans too heavily into expanded lore and obscure forerunner history), and has a multi-player scene that is very much player-driven in the way that Halo 3 and Reach’s matchmaking tended to be.

I’d be pleasantly surprised with a game that scratches the Halo itch without a lot of compromises. I think that needs to be the focus right now: mending fences that have been in various degrees of disrepair since 343i took the helm almost ten years ago.

Surprise Halo players? Make spartan gameplay in the campaign lore-accurate. Melee through concrete walls and run through every single firefight at 30mph. Yessir.

Yes. We need our half-jaw hero.

Let’s not forget lore behind the extra players like Halo 3 subtly had.

i’m hoping the reward for getting 152 is surprising lol… too bad its not going to be an armor set

Ways to surprise Halo Infinite players. A complete game at launch with no micro transactions would be the best surprise ever. Not going to happen though, “shudders” and looks to Gears 5.

I have personally stayed away from Gears 5’s online modes for the time being simply to wait for everything to get ironed out, but I can totally see the issue people take with its economy. Rod recently tweeted that they are “learning as they go.” That sounds an awful lot like they are simply testing how far they can push the MT boundaries because it’s fairly easy to look to basically every game from the 360 era to see how to do a game economy properly. It’s unfortunate great franchises like Gears and Halo have to have MT’s attached to them these days.

Here’s to hoping 343i surprises us with what you said. If they do it a bit like Halo 4 even, that would be great.

Let us play as covanent would be so surprising.

LOL, but that would make halo fans be done with Halo forever. Still worried about the microtransactions after gears 5 had an insulting one even worse than gears 4

I would love to have the same kind of playstyle as Battlefield 3 did, with interchanging characters, though as TheSmallestPond wrote, it’s supposed to center around Chief.

yes, this one please. 343i pick this one.
