I think two critical things really impacted H5’s reception.
Campaign should have been 70% Chief and 30% Locke (and generally better).
Releasing on XBO and PC probably would have gotten H5 picked up by a ton of PC movement shooter players. The XBO console being dead on arrival is what really tanked H5 imo.
Before read only mode hits, I plan on posting a summary of the results with the HCE and H5 options bundled together. It’s not that hard to look at the results and total them yourself.
Basically it looks like H3 is there outright favorite, H4 is the least well received, and everything else is basically tied with Reach having a slight edge to second over the rest. Pretty interesting lol.
Oh and as an fyi, the options like Halo CE (Anniversary) are intended to be chosen by players who like HCE the most OR HCEA. Since the campaign is the same with new graphics, and there’s very little actual new content, that’s why I combined anniversary and classic selections.
Also, I can’t edit poll options once it’s posted without breaking the poll (though I would leave them how I have them )
Is anyone very surprised at the voting breakdown? I think it’s interesting that H3, and H4 are so separated from the rest of the pack on each end of the vote, with everything else basically tied
Halo 5 doesn’t surprise me, the multiplayer ended up being pretty fantastic and the graphics and maps were very strong. It also introduced Strongholds which I think is one of Halo’s best gametypes. Campaign was absolutely awful. I genuinely hated it.
Halo 4 being dead last doesn’t surprise me. I didn’t mind the campaign, but it was weaker than the original trilogy and the multiplayer absolutely blew chunks. I was already falling out of love with Halo after ODST and Reach, but H4 was the nail in the coffin.
I voted for Halo 3 due to nostalgia and ridiculous amount of hours spent playing multiplayer. I had 10,000+ games of it, completed the campaign probably 10 or more times. Although I do think Infinite is a fairly decent game. If they hadn’t fumbled the release and content drops so hard it could have been something special. Like H5 I still think it’s a very fun multiplayer game, but I also only want to play it now and again. It doesn’t have the same level of replayability to me as a game like Overwatch. The variety just isn’t there in the ranked playlists for example. Events were especially weak.
I’m not surprised by H5 performing well, because it’s total MP package was turned into a masterclass experience. There’s so much to do it’s crazy, and the hitreg is incredible. It’s also the only PvPvE experience in the franchise (regarding FPS titles).
CE feels like it’s underperforming, but a couple people have made pretty good points about.
Honestly I’m amazed Infinite is performing so well, is that bad of me to say? Lol
I mean for as much crap as infinite gets it’s core gameplay is solid and feels good. The campaign is fun albeit lacking in content much the same as the multiplayer. Infinite has it’s issues, but is probably the best overall experience 343i has made… which is a sad fact.
The closest thing to infinite in regards to experience in my opinion is Halo 4. However you have to make some specific tweaks to Halo 4 in order to reach that. Specifically if you’re playing multiplayer / custom games, removal of the loadout system so it’s fair starts and no weapon drop rewards (kill streaks). When you play it more in the style of a classic Halo game it actually plays pretty good. And while the art is maybe not the greatest the customization choices as in the pieces you can customize definitely allowed you to make the most unique and customized Spartan out of the entire series.
I think another reason people don’t view ODST in a good light is because Bungie had a 5 game contract with Microsoft and 1 of those 5 felt more like an expansion than an actual game but really I didn’t mind. Firefight was an awesome new and fun experience. Then you had the amazing story and extremely catchy music.
I think ODST being so low is a symptom of only offering Campaign and Firefight as the only experiences unique to that game.
It doesn’t have the MP experience to raise its merit, and never really got major DLC.
And I know its story is pretty good, and the audio logs are interesting, but it’s pretty tough to argue ODST’s story is better than the mainline original trilogy. And all of those just generally offered more other stuff to do.
It is official 150 people have voted. I know the statistics aren’t that interesting but for anyone interested here is the updated count of players voting for each game.
Halo 3: 51
Halo Reach: 27
Halo 2 A: 18
Halo Infinite: 18
Halo 5:15
Halo CE A:11
Halo CE PC: 3
Halo 4: 3
Halo 2 Vista: 2
Halo 3: ODST: 2
Halo 5 Forge PC: 2
Well, after a week with S3 I will say I have some hope restored for Infinite’s future. If we get solid content added in every 4-6 month’s for the next couple years Infinite has potential to climb its way up my personal list
Content wise it might be better, but I’m not confident in it’s stability. Since the update this things falling apart like a rusty wagon MacGyver slapped together with bubblegum and rubber bands. Wait… no that’s disrespectful to MacGyver. He does better work than this.
Other Halo games outdo it in one way or another, whether its the depth and high skill gap of CE multi, the great maps of Halo 2, the awesome multi faction encounters in CE and 2, Firefight in ODST and Reach, or the sheer options available in Reach. Or any number of individual aspects.
But Halo 3 is just the best overall package for me. Not flawless by any means, but in spite of the valid criticisms, there is a reason Halo 3 was the most successful Halo game and still gets as much playtime as it does in MCC today. Shoot its those flaws that make it so frustrating when people deflect criticism of newer games by stating “you just want Halo 3.5” there was so much more that could have been improved on Halo 3 on top of an already stellar package.
I voted for CE and it’s the only game I thought would be significantly higher than it is. I am largely voting based on campaigns rather than multiplayer as that mainly what I played prior to Infinite.
I actually didn’t rate the ODST campaign very highly. It was a cool concept and pretty well done but it was short and lacked any of the scale of the main campaigns.
I don’t know H3 or HR which is best.
But I think if Halo Infinite was completed and stable when launch it might be the best multiplayer experience in halo series.
Sadly, it wasn’t!
