If you would like a good breakdown of how each rank is achieved and what the different ranks are, this is the perfect thread for you. It was created by The Little Moa and it is updated whenever it needs to be. After reading this you should understand rankings to the fullest possible extent, if not, feel free to ask Moa, myself, or anyone on the forums.

On top of knowing what each rank is and how to obtain it, I created a thread which tracks every forum members rank (Marine Gold and higher.) This should give you an idea of who is a more active member, who is a moderator, and a lot of other information.
