Was the open world worth losing so many key features at launch?

Yeah… No… No it isn’t worth losing all that we have. First 30 minutes of the game until they throw you into Zeta were actually pretty good. Glad someone else mentioned Halo 2 and also how much crunch was done on that game in such a small amount of time. Yet it came out to be revolutionary and probably my favorite campaign at that.

Don’t worry Lethal, this game is so broken that I think speed runs are down to 12 minutes or around there. Pretty sure that happened in the first two weeks lmao so even the speedrunning for the game is meh.

Agreed, so far last year two of the games I love Halo and PSO2 were hurt due to the devs of the games playing Breath of the Wild.

I wish games would stay relatively the same. The reason I loved playing them was due to the existing gameplay loop. Not some hybridization of it.

Well, if the creation of an open-world campaign was directly responsible for it? Absolutely not, I would prefer linear missions with tons of fleshed out content.

Was the open world fun? Sure, I liked it. It could have great use in the future. But again, if this design direction is what caused the lack of features, then it was by no means worth it.

Notice how they went silent on Co Op campaign. Right now the only thing we heard coming season 2 was monetization stuff…

But Co op Campaign is a dead silent Convo… I honestly think they aren’t bringing it for a year at best…

They don’t want to admit it. But the game is unstable and they are trying to repeice it together as they go… And co op campaign probably wasn’t even in the build. Like they are still trying to figure out how to break it to us that it’s not coming as a feature.

I belives it’s more than just the Co-Op, and this is part of the reason why the BP/shop is being pushed but that isn’t working out all the well either.

Yea, at this point the whole it’s broken at launch but five it a few years it may get better has gotten old.

And game developers seem to now believe that’s the acceptable standard

But can you imagine if they just scrapped Co op campaign. Like I’m already accepting that as a reality,

It’s not even hating on 343 but I honestly feel like they are currently in a state where they are barely holding the current game build together. God help us when the next gamemodes get put in… It’s like the Desync and Ping issues got worse during the event

I doubt the open world was the cause of the problem, like -Yoink!- Of 343 can’t put together an Open world in 2019-2021, without breaking a game that’s just sad… maybe they should have outsourced Ubisoft…

But yea this game right now besides features has such bad connection issues and thy have gotten worse since the last event.

I even re-downloaded warzone… I figured if I wanted to pay a agme with bad hit detection and network connection it may as well be that one … plus the skins are universal to all the weapons in that class once I unlock it

Not quite. The real question should be : “Was Halo Infinite going to ship with all these features in the first place, or are they intentionally pulling it back so they could release them as premature Event updates?”

My suspicion is that it’s abit of both.

Open world could work, and it does work. In the end they never bothered to expand MP and focused on Campaign instead. We’re talking about 343 here, a studio owned by MS which has so much resources and you tell me they can’t get more people to work on MP on the side while Campaign crew worked on Campaign? That’s sus.

They’re either lazy or holding back, which both aren’t affected by their choice of making an Open World.

You guys wanna know my honest opinion? 343 just doesn’t like making Halo anymore. Each Halo they give us has more “unhalo” than “halo”. Infinite by far is the least “unhalo” which is the main reason why fans love it so much, even with all its unbecomings.

It really does have me curious about how bad things actually are because, in this day and age, this game shouldn’t even be anywhere near this far gone

Oh man. Isn’t vehicle traversal just totally stuffed?

There is always something in the way, even a little stump. It’s just so needlessly frustrating. And even just the slightest amount of incline, and your vehicle is slowed down to a snail’s crawl, if it lets you move at all!!

They made the vehicles so frustrating to use on the landscape. It shouldn’t be like this.

Roght and people are still trying to defend the game by saying oh it’s understandable. But they aren’t even asking how bad was the game itself if it had a 6 yr development and after the1 yr delayed it had this as the result…

Like the only complaint people really had was the graphics of the game when we saw that Campaign demo…

It’s making me wonder how bad it was when Jason Statem walked in and saw enough to scrap 1/3 of the content just to get it out the door

The open world aspect of any game can work just fine. It all really depends on game direction and most importantly, the writing.

The reason I think the open world map works fine for Infinite’s story is because they are planning on adding content to this map over time. I think 343 should have had a little bit more to discover at launch that gave some actual life to Zeta, instead of random Banished enemies scattered around or patrolling. Sure, there were collectables, and easter eggs, but the map was very under utilized in my opinion. There really wasn’t anything new or fresh to Halo besides the map. I expected to aide some Spartans out there… or at least some marines across the campaign, and not just “save the prisoners,” I expected like a named marine trying to rally the survivors and keep morale high. Nothing except Chief and Pilot and I think that’s just a lazy writing core, surrounded by a decent game direction, in an under utilized open world map. We all know the map will eventually be filled in, but it was just too bare at launch.

Placing single player missions in specific areas of a map is common to any game with an explorable world. Halo Infinite just didn’t have enough missions that really stood out to me, even though the open world was presented as optional, the game relied to heavily on exploring it. Conquering Banished Outposts, FOBs, HVTs etc. actually became primary concerns for me, otherwise I would have finished Infinite’s storyline MUCH sooner.

In conclusion, at this moment, I do not think the switch to open world was worth it, was it possible? Of course, but 343 was not prepared and with the lack of biomes and meaningful activities that had any real impact on the game, we were given a skeleton of Infinite, with the next several years slowly adding more and more to the game to finally reach the 100% that is usually supposed to be delivered at launch.

If it’s free, it’s fine, but if it isn’t, it isn’t.
The story, the map, the features, they’re all too lacking, especially with all of the customization removed.
Not to mention that 2/3rds of the game was cut, and that it seems the campaign gave armor unlocks at some point before it was released.

Yep… they had the nerve to charge $60 just for campaign while previous titles (not poop 5) included Forge, Working theater, More custom options, etc… They had the nerve to charge $60 for just a campaign and the icing on the cake is it was cut and is still pretty much incomplete, just wow. You know… I loved GoT… it held such a drastic place in my heart and they ripped it out. I have no shame to admit they ruined it, it pains me, but brings me solitude realizing that I wasn’t blind and am realistic with my standards.

What does “GoT” stand for?

Lol Game of Thrones. My point there was I loved GoT and just because of that I did not let mistakes slide like a lot of this fanbase is doing. I even went as far as shunning the actors who lied to the us and the media saying it was good, etc… Go figure a lot of them later on said they thought it sucked . But yeah that’s what I was aiming for, no nostalgia bias or toxic positivity here.

Oh, okay.
That makes some more sense.

I think the question “was it worth it?” doesn’t match the development of this game.

They stated that they originally had different plans - Way bigger, less linear. In the end, it was too ambitious and/or the know-how to create such a game was missing.

Basically, they got a bit lost during the process. There were even plans to release the Multiplayer way earlier, since progress over there was much better.

In the end, what we have right now is more like a fix or compromise and less intentional (that’s why I think the question doesn’t match).

Even though I have to say, “fix or compromise” sounds worse than my opinion actually is. Yes, things could be better. And I’m pretty sure there WILL be story DLC which offer more variety/let us explore different regions of the ring. But in General, I mostly like the mix of open world and linear missions, and I am glad they took this route, since it benefits storytelling.
