was the halo 4’s Loadout system bad personally I don’t think so they don’t break the game in my opinion. I just thought it was a cool way to pick your favorite rifle and side arm before a BTB match so I know people say it’s to cod like but I have to disagree a more accurate comparison would be the battlefield series or even the recent star wars battlefront but again this is my opinion.
The way people compare Halo 4 to COD for having loadouts is an oversimplification. There are still many differences between Halo 4 and COD that are almost always overlooked, chiefly the pace of these games.
COD is a twitch shooter, a game where gunfights are won by having a faster reaction time than your opponent. Halo is a tactical shooter, a game where whoever wins a particular gunfight is determined by a variety of factors, most of which are governed by skill. Since you don’t go down as soon as you get shot, there are a number of different options you can take when you’re attacked. Do you fight while strafing to avoid getting hit? Do you throw a grenade? Do you run for cover? Do you try to lure them into a trap where they get ambushed by your teammates, or a trap where you jump over them and hit them in the back? These are options made in split-second decisions, and they define what it means for an FPS to be tactical. Most importantly, these elements still apply to Halo 4, as it did with other games such as Halo 3.
Furthermore, the loadout system in Halo 4 was quite different from that of COD’s. In COD, you get a primary weapon, where your choices include assault rifles, SMGs, LMGs, and sniper rifles. Secondary weapons included handguns, machine pistols, and even rocket launchers. Shotguns could be used as either primary or secondary weapons, depending on the game. Not only that, but nearly all of these weapons had attachments available to them to enhance their performance. Additionally, COD loadouts included a variety of equipment to choose from, special grenades, 3 perk slots, and killstreak rewards that could give you anything from an enhanced radar to a game-ending nuclear bomb.
Let’s compare how COD handles loadouts to Halo 4. In Halo 4, you have primary and secondary weapon slots. Primaries had automatic and precision rifles, while secondaries where comprised only of handguns. Other weapons such as shotguns (inb4 Boltshot), snipers, and rocket launchers had to be scavenged from the field. You had to fight for power weapons in Halo 4, just like any other Halo game. And before someone mentions ordinance, you still had to fight and get kills to get ordinance. While we’re on ordinance, it should be mentioned that they can’t be compared to killstreaks either. COD killsteaks give you attack helicopters, predator missiles, napalm strikes, and so on. Halo 4 ordinance doesn’t let you call in attack pelicans or glass the battlefield from orbit; it only gives you a small boost by proving you with a weapon, grenade, or powerup.
Back on the topic of loadouts: In addition to those weapons, you got to pick a set of grenades, an armor ability, and two perks. So not only can you not spawn with power weapons, you can’tt spawn with things like claymores, C4, OHK throwing knives, or flashbang/concussion grenades; they don’t even exist in Halo 4. Furthermore, the perks in Halo 4 provide more subtle benefits to players than COD’s perks. In COD, you can tell what perks other players were using if you paid attention. Cold Blooded, Tactical Mask, etc. In Halo 4, the only perk that’s actually ‘visible’ is stealth (and if you think about it, it’s kind of ironic since the perk’s main benefit is taking you off of promethean vision.) So on the surface Halo 4’s loadout system is at least comparable to that of COD’s, but in depth the games aren’t fit for comparison. It’s like comparing apples to oranges.
Of course, many people don’t see it that way. The loadout system made Halo 4 different enough that they didn’t like it. And instead of thinking it all though, like in this post, it’s much easier for them to say something like “It’s just a ripoff of COD” and call it a day.
