Anyone know? How did she do it if she indeed did do it? Can the Mark VI be changed like that?
omg this question has been asnwered so many times in the last year.
This issue has been dicused many times… And I believe the answer 343i has told us is that they just re invented the look of the mark VI armour.

What’s the answer then?

I don’t like that they did that then. A character like Chief shouldn’t have his appearance changed just because a new developer takes over. There should be an explanation other than “This is how we want him to look”. Halo 2 he got an upgrade and it was shown, and now suddenly he wakes up and looks very different. Come on.
Well technically cortana changed it while he was in cryo.
- “Slop is military slang for Nanoreagent Hydrocarbots - a suspension of nanomachines that renders nearly all carbon heavy matter into usable fuel for the UNSC’s ubiquitous internal combustion powerplants.”
This confirms UNSC possess Nanotechnology and had it around the time the Chief’s armor was made.
- In Campaign, players take the role of the Master Chief, the living legend of the Covenant War, a SPARTAN-II super-soldier wearing heavily modified GEN1 Mjolnir armor.
This confirms his Armor has been modified.
- I noticed that the Mark VI armor for Multiplayer is not the same armor that the Chief dons in Halo 4. What type of armor is the Chief wearing then? -One One Seven
Very fancy, very custom, very unique “Cortana special” armor.
This confirms the armor is customized by Cortana
- “Nanobots making repairs to Chief’s armor.”
This confirms Chief’s armor interacts with Nanobots
Now put all of this together and you have your answer: Nanobots were used by Cortana to modify the Chief’s armor while he slept in Cryo for 4 years.
Let’s not forget that the old Mark VI armor is in the game as well which means it exists side by side the Chief’s Mark VI which confirms that it’s not entirely artistic interpretation. The old Mark VI still exists because that’s what his looked like before Cortana changed it.
Yes Cortana only verbally states she updated his firmware, but the Chief also looks down and examines his arms proclaiming, “you’ve been busy.” She changed his armor, that’s a fact.
nothing was changed except the look as they wanted to make an artistic change.
its visual only. like the jackals.
Its a different artists interpretation of Master Chiefs armor.
This happens in comic books all the damn time.

I don’t see the problem, most of the characters/species/vechicles have different designs now. it’s 343’s mark on the franchise to show, this was Bungie, and this is us maybe. Plus the armour looks more functional now.
i love batman. do i get all mad and huffy when a new artist changes him slightly or demand a reason for the new costume? no its just a new take on old material. oh well. still looks cool.

I agree 100% Plus Bungie changed chiefs armour in every installment of halo, all though from CE to halo 2 he changed from a MARK V to MARK VI. But the armor was even changed in halo 3 when he was still wearing the MARK VI, though not as noticeable as the latest change. I think that the change is good and each halo should give cheif a new look, in my opinion.

Chief is the main character. The Covenant fought in Halo 4 are a splinter group of the Covenant, so the difference in appearance can be explained. I don’t dislike the look, I just feel it’s a bit heavy handed for a new developer to come in and start changing the look of iconic characters. The Forward Unto Dawn also looks nothing like a Frigate. Continuity is important and 343 haven’t done a great job on that front so far. I mean, in the prologue, all the Spartans look the same as Chief in his apparently heavily updated Mark IV.
I understand wanting to differentiate themselves from Bungie’s work, but don’t do it to the detriment of story and continuity. I’m all for changing things, I just feel they should make sense, rather than being for the sake of change.

Bungie changed him less when a generational leap was made in consoles though. He looked 95% the same. I agree about the new look as well, but wouldn’t it have made more sense for Chief to get his new armour aboard the Infinity than just wake up in it, with Cortana apparently updating it, which 343 seem to only want to half commit to.
They have a new engine so they can put way more detail in the armor than ever before. Although it doesn’t look the same, it technically is still the Mark VI but in HD!
yeah i know what you mean, I wish they could have given a better explanation for it too
But…they did give a reason. In TDK he wants new armor so that he can be more mobile. They didn’t just up and change him just to make him look cooler, though that was part of the reason.
I too am disappointed with how they handled MC armor change. When you’re making Halo 4, the sequel to Halo 3, you should have to follow the story. Chief’s armor in Halo 3 was a lot different than in Halo 4.
If the explanation is “Cortana changed it while he was in cryo” then why didn’t they show us that? You can’t expect all of your players to do their own investigating as to what’s going on, it’s your job to fill us in on this stuff 343.
I didn’t like how you handled the armor change 343, and there were a few things in the campaign that could have used better explanation as well, again, it’s your job to fill us in on what’s going on, not ours to become Halo experts and know everything there is to know about the game’s lore.
I would be perfectly happy and even excited about the armor change -if- it had a better explanation story-wise. In my head canon, Chief wore the mark VI armor you get from beating the game on legendary, up until he got to the Infinity, where Sarah took him aside and said “Hey, how about an armor upgrade?” and that’s when he gets the new GEN2 looking armor. Storywise, that makes a lot more sense then Cortana used nanobots to completely alter the look and layout of the armor. IMO anyway. It also bothered me that in some of the screens on the Forward Unto Dawn were using the new UNSC symbol, opposed to the old one. Apparently the nanobots upgraded the symbol too.

The Forward Unto Dawn in Halo 4 also looks nothing like the Forward Unto Dawn in Halo 3. I understand wanting to change things 343, but don’t change what is already established in the Halo universe. You can make things look however you like for things that are made/established after 2553, but not before.
