Was Halo 5 rewritten?

Ever since Halo 5: Guardians released, people have wondered if there was a rewrite to the game. When the marketing for the game began, we got these very interesting trailers that got us hyped here and here. This painted a story about Locke hunting down John, who he believes is a traitor to Humanity. A very interesting piece of evidence is in this. It seemed that Halsey would’ve had a role more on the antagonistic side. I wonder if they originally had an earlier draft, which followed was more like what’s presented in the trailers, along with Halsey’s role. If there was a massive rewrite, could it have been at the last minute, and that’s why it’s poorly written. Do you think they originally had a different idea for Halo 5, but there was a massive rewrite towards the end of production?

Yes, that’s exacly what I think. That, and Microsoft might have had a hand in the changes…might have. Halo 5 was looking to be a masterpiece, the Halo 2 of the modern era of sci fi FPSs. Whatever happened totally prevented that. I still think they sprinkled in some extremely interesting narrative seeds that attempt to tie into old and new lore, regardless.

We don’t know for sure but the evidence suggests there bigger rewrites than usually they make in the late game making process. I also hope there were such problems in the gamedeveloping and the campaign didn’t fail only because 343 was so incapable. I seriously doubt it after a pretty good story in halo 4. It didn’t have same writers though

The evidence is there but unconfirmed indefinitely however I doubt -Yoink!- had any responsibility as they wouldn’t need to. It’s pretty obvious the rewrites were because of the departures and transfers of halo 4s writing team who were working on halo 5 before the announcement. This is pretty evident in escalations after schelf’s escalation arc wrapped up as all the arcs after were between bad and mediocre

Yeah, some videos, images and leaks (which we are not allowed to discuss) suggest that there was a re-write during the last year and a half for some reason. Here is a “short” list of what I consider evidence:

The change from Thorne to Buck. (Although this was probably just casting difficulties)
The image antagonizing Halsey.
The sudden destruction of Juls Covenant.
Some unexplained plot holes in the comics (including why Halsey is suddenly sane again in Halo 5, SPOILERS, she was kinda going mad with power when she was in the place with the Janus key, SPOILER END)
The unexpected end of a lot of plot lines started in Halo 4.
Master Chief in a cloak.
Dead Chief trailers.
Merdian City trailers and concept art.
Osiris vs Blue team trailers.
The general badness of Halo 5 campaign.
Killing of the Didact the second time
The irregularities of Osiris team compared to extended fiction. (Vale is a cool dude in Hunters in the Dark!)

Im willing to bet there was a drastic change during an important time, obviously not big enough to delay or cancel the game but I’m guessing it came close.

Its highly likely that there were re-writes. All of that story in the trailers that was never used has to mean they re-wrote it. Why they did it though, we may never know.

It’s possible. It wouldn’t be the first time a game was massively reworked (looking at you, Destiny).
It’s important that we all understand, though, that we can only speculate (and I’m glad everyone who’s posted so far acknowledges that); nothing is proven yet. So make sure you don’t go about tossing blame at specific parties.

No that was just bait and switch marketing. Halo 4 didn’t have any reference to the drama between Cortana and Chief either even though it was arguably even more central to the game than those two in Halo 5. The marketing hasn’t reflected the final product at all historically. They will always go with something they know will appeal most to the demographic.

If you look at the E3 trailer from 2013, just a few months after Halo 4 was released. We see Chief, with Cortana’s chip, confronting a Guardian; implying he is on a quest to find her and that this machine is somehow connected to her. That’s really clear cut given what we know from Halo 5.

Also, in the Sprint documentary for developing Halo 5 which came about around the same time, they show the voice actors doing the scene with Halsey and Laskey in the control room where they say “hes gone in search of her”. You even heard Cortana speak in one of the trailers.

I mean I simply can’t relate to the notion. After Halo 4 I said they would bring her back using the Domain and that is exactly what they did.

B. Reed said there were development changes, but not when and what they were in relation to. If there was any major change in relation to Cortana, it had to have happened between Halo 4 and the E3 2013 trailer.

Also, its quite possible that they originally intended to do stuff with Halsey, Jul and the Didact that would lead into Cortana coming back as the villain. But decided that, since people really liked the Chief/Cortana stuff, lets just bring that forward instead. Theres more than one way of looking at “development changes”.

Without a doubt, and it was almost as bad as Halo 2.

However with that game, Bungie just had to cut out things, whereas Halo 5 crammed in new things and replaced old things(All of Halo 4).

Why they did this, I do not know.

I think halo 2 did at least good universe bulding and had somewhat interesting characters. My first halo was halo 3 but now that I’ve played halo 2A’s campaign I have to say I really like it. Even the cliffhanger isn’t that bad now when more games have already come out.
