After completing Halo 5 my brother made the comment that equated to Halo 4’s story really did not matter or factor into the new and continuing Halo stories. While I could see his point somewhat, when I thought about it for a bit I would ultimately disagree…
Elements of Halo 4 and 5 campaign will be discussed.Yes, it almost seems that Halo 5 does not consider 4 in its story equation. And in full disclosure I have not completed is prequel, Escalation, yet. But what I think about Halo 4 that is important for bridging into Halo 5 I think about these points:
The Fall and Rise of Cortana: Halo 4 is really Fortuna’s journey which ultimately ends in her sacrifice to save the Chief. This all happens as Cortana is succumbing to Rampancy, that troublesome side effect of being a UNSC smart AI which caps their life at 7 years (Frank O’Conner’s recent book, Saint’s Testimony, is an excellent story about an AI’s experience at the end of its life. No doubt this story and its lead in to Halo 5 was no accident). Halo 5 sees Fortuna rise from her Grave and assumes the Mantle… of being the newest villain of the Halo universe with many AIs in tow. I predict over time that Halo 4’s story will become an even greater factor in this current arc than it appears at the moment. - The Forerunners: Halo 4 also physically introduces us in the game world to this enigmatic race. While Greg Bear’s seminal works of the Forerunner Saga really are the blueprints for their civilization, the fact of the matter is the majority of Halo players are not involved in the extended fiction, so those elements need a start in the game world, and Halo 4 is truly the Forerunner launch point for this franchise, even though we have seen their fingerprints from its inception. - Forerunner Worlds and Technology: Though Halo Wars is the likely launch point for Forerunner worlds and tech, a lot has changed in the lore since then, and a lot of Halo gamers will not have experienced that game whatsoever. Even as I write this I struggle to remember how they handled the Forerunners in that game. Halo 4 would likely be the entry point for gamers in this series to Forerunner installations other than the Halos themselves. We see the shield world Requiem, we see a Cryptum (which features prominently at the climax of Halo 5), and we are also introduced to the Forerunners defenders, the Promethean Knights. I found the introduction of Promethean Soldiers in Halo 5 jarring enough, even with having seen most of the ‘created’ in Halo 4. - Infinity and the UNSC: Spartan 4s, and the rapid growth of the UNSC having now Forerunner technology incorporated into their starships, Halo 4 brings us the new and improved UNSC in all its glory as well as introducing us to new key players such as Palmer and Lasky.Halo 4 is the series reboot and it lays out the groundwork and the playfield for the series going forward. While Halo 5 feels like a substantial departure from the stories of Halo 4, and it is, it still could not have been told without this groundwork. How well do you feel these stories mesh? Discuss away!
Hmmm let look at some of the things halo 5 never even touched on first being the librarian she told Dr. Halsey that she had hidden gifts for man kind and gave her the key to finding them yet no one talk about that key and the fact dr. Halsey had half of it and the unsc had the other half. Chief’s full potential was unlocked by the librarian making him far more than any of the other Spartan could ever hope to be yet this game treated him as a equal the agent locke, I mean really she did that to him so he could go toe to toe with the Didact she even told him he would lose she is didn’t move his evolution forward yet we don’t see what the did to the chief -Yoink- no one even brings it up ever. also not explained is how did Dr Halsey gain accept to the domain figure out Cortana’s plan all under the 24/7 watchful eyes of Jul 'Mdama… Let not forget Cap. Lasky disobeyed orders to help the MC but we are to over look that and thing he would give the order to hunt him down. the plot holes in this game is insane to the point the writing team should be a shame of themselves. they over looked all the major development from halo 4 while giving no context for what was going on in this game.

I don’t really remember anyone but Chief and Cortana actually being there when it happened and I don’t think Chief is much of a talker

But he is still on the next level of human evolution, yet it is not even mentioned in the game.

Why would Centcom even know he was ever affected by the Composer? At the research station, Chief was the sole survivor and UNSC didn’t know where he was at the time. Even at the end of Halo 4, on the Didact’s ship, while New Phoenix was being composed, UNSC didn’t know Chief was there.
No doubt during debriefing, Chief would bring up his involvement, and they would assume correctly, that he was not in the Composer beam while fighting the Didact.
Do you think that Chief would think Twice about divulging his meeting with the Librarian? Chief’s latest experience was that UNSC high command did not trust him, thought he was outdated and mentally unstable. If he told them he had a magical dream where he met a Forerunner, and he was the next stage of human evolution, they’d put him away! He would keep that info to himself.
H3 ended with chief going to requiem.
H4 started with chief at requiem.
h4 ended with chief with the UNSC.
h5 started with chief with the UNSC.
so yea just skip h4…
h3 ended with cortana
h4 started with cortana
h4 ended without cortana
h5 started without cortana
so yea just skip h4…
h3 had no prometheans
h4 introduced prometheans
h5 immediately attacked prometheans
so yea just skip h4…
Need I go on?
h5 will make more sense when h6 drops.

The UNSC knew the Chief was on the Mantle’s Approach while the Didact was composing the population of New Phoenix. Lasky spoke to the Chief while the Chief was in the Broadsword, explaining the he (Lasky) was in charge of Infinity after Del Rio’s leadership failure. After the Chief dropped the ship’s shields, Infinity blew a hole in it specifically so the Chief could fly into the interior. Then, as you probably know, he blew up Mantle’s Approach and was pulled from orbit by a search and rescue team in a Pelican.
