Was Chief supposed to confront a Guardian?

Like in the E3 trailer from 2013?

Because apart from that trailer, I was having a look through the art work book and theres quite a few images of different versions of that taking place. Two of which are clearly on Meridian. The other looks like he is inside the Guardian shelter. Which is probably my favourite one because its just this impossibly huge mechanical eye with the Chief almost an ant by comparison. Really conveys the sense of scale and its quite an odd contrast to have this giant death machine do something “human” like that; almost gentle. As an aside, that would have IMO been better than Cortana showing up in a vision as there’s more ambivalence over her survival and its a little more grounded to use something artificial like a Guardian to communicate with the Chief. “Its me. Wink wink.” type deal.

But that’s an aside. Do you think this meant to occur in a cutscene?

I mean if it was to happen anywhere it would have had to have happened during the Guardian shelter and that’s, by far, the longest single cutscene in the game and we’re in Locke mode. So I am guessing they just couldn’t fit that in. Looking at it again, the “eye” thing I mentioned does look a lot like the thing the Chief steps in to teleport onto the Guardian. So maybe originally the plan was the Chief sees this Guardian, it rises up he realises Cortana is definitely controlling the thing and is about to go along for the ride when Osiris shows up and the fight ensues. But again, I think they probably wanted to keep us with Locke and Osiris. Instead of switching perspective to Chief for a bit and then having Osiris show up. That way they could have them chase Chief for a bit.

Or I don’t know, maybe there was meant to be a mission with the Chief on Meridian and this was part of it. I have seen other concept art of the Chief fighting these mining robots on Meridian. Maybe this was part of that as well?

Teaser trailers are often conceptual, not canonical. This trailer was meant to show the loss and sadness regarding Cortana, and a new threat in the form of the guardians.

I think that first trailer was made before the final story was completed (I’m also thinking there may have been some revisions) … but I watched it again recently and, well, the thing feels kinda like a trailer for Halo 6.

I am just using the trailer as a point of reference so people know what I am talking about. My main focus on the fact theres quite a lot of that in the artbook. I mean I suppose it could be artwork for the cinematic itself. But then there are Meridian buildings and assets like the eye quite close to what was in Guardians so I reckon this came after the E3 trailer. So it may have been conceptual but the art suggests they may have wanted a scene like that to play out.

Well, I am not convinced of that myself. But, the way the images are done in the concept art, whenever it was done, it does look a lot like they had the idea by then that Chief was essentially realising that Cortana was in the machine. Especially that eye one I mentioned. I mean that actually really reminds me of Mass Effect 3 on Rannoch when you have this enormous Reaper talking to Shepard. Just its actually sweet little Cortana.

I mean you can’t do that in Halo 6 because, well, its not funny if she actually is an evil reaper.

Annoyingly I can’t seem to get the image on google. Its the one on page 138-139.
