spark caused alot of trouble throught the trilogy. though was he a villain? he was only doing what he thought was right. after all, he is only an AI. his job was to protect the rings, and get a reclaimer to fire the rings if the flood rised, and thats what he was trying to do, what do you think? hero or villain
Neither hero nor villain.
> Neither hero nor villain.
This, he was just trying to follow protocol
Ω
Guilty Spark did what he thought was best - even if it was wrong.

I agree. The only thing that makes me say villain is the fact that he killed Johnson and that is unforgivable.
Like everyone else said, technically he’s neither a hero or a villain. He was just doing what he felt was right.
However, personally to me, killing Sargent Johnson? Instant villain.

Which was all well and good until he murdered Johnson for doing just that. And never mind the fact that he didn’t appear to consider any alternatives back on Installation 04A, i.e. destroying all foreign vessels to prevent the Flood from escaping the ring.
He may have been insane and following a confused interpretation of his protocol, but neither excuses his transgressions. Attempted omnicide when it wasn’t yet necessary, attempted murder of Chief, and completed murder of Johnson – seems plenty evil to me.
Not really, taken from him:
“Protocol dictates action!”
He was merely carrying out the will of the Forerunners as per his programming. Their will threatened the existence of life (temporarily), but it also made sure The Flood would be wiped out. Anyone who tried to get in the way of him carrying out his job would naturally be an enemy.
So were Forerunners villains?
> Neither hero nor villain.
I agree with DavidJCobb. He’s evil.
Well with him being around Halo for 100,000 or so years…I say he’s a mad man
Hundreds of thousands year doing nothing much will have it’s effects on even the most sophisticated of things.
But murdering the last known SPARTAN I and trying to kill Chief is bad stuff! He’s a bad guy.

This, anyone who kills Johnson needs to die, Johnson was the best!!!
The toughest, cigar-chompenest marine there is!
I pity him.
For 100,000 years, he’s charged with maintaining an instillation that doesn’t really need him outside of basic programming and the such. Suddenly, the Reclaimers he has waited for for 100,000 years. He’s over the moon. However, the Reclaimers are ignorant, wont listen and have brought with them an alien empire that will release the Flood.
Then, his home, his one possession, the thing he has been guarded with, is destroyed by the selfish Reclaimers to save the lives of maybe a few hundred.
He now has nothing to live for, because those he wanted to help spat in his face.
Absolute hero.
He want Rampant, Halo 1 Antagonist sort of, Halo 2 ally sort of, Halo 3 Ally and Enemy. Primordium Good Guy, Halo 4 Ally
Hmm, let’s see.
His sole purpose was to guard and maintain Installation 04, which he did for 100,000 years. Alone. Lesser beings have gone mad from mere days of solitude… but for one of his personality and intelligence… his makers abandoned him, and when he finally recieved the Reclaimers, they betrayed him and destroyed his home, the only thing that had been constant in his life up until then. He witnesses Halo’s destruction and flies off to learn that there are aliens out there who worship the Forerunners as gods and are completely ignorant of their purpose. Obviously distressed, he attempts to teach them otherwise until they are slaughtered by the Arbiter and he himself is kidnapped.
After being brutally interrogated and tortured by blind zealous fools on High Charity, he is brought to Installation 05, where the Flood have broken loose and the Monitor is their captive. He is then whisked away to the Ark, where the Flood have attacked and his new Halo is being built. Delighted at the Reclaimer’s offer to fire the Halo and destroy the Flood once and for all, fulfilling his purpose, he is betrayed yet again and with the threat of his home being destroyed again, as well as the Ark which is of paramount importance, he snaps (and who can blame him, after all he’s been through) and does his duty and valiantly attempts to stop the Ark’s destruction until he is destroyed by his Reclaimer.
It would be foolish to accuse 343 Guilty Spark of being a villain.
Anti-Hero
Not a villain, but not a “Hero” either.
