Most of you probably already read the latest update on the coming update, there we get a little look of a new Warzone map, called “Skirmish at Darkstar”. If not, go HERE.
I wanted to know what do you think about this first look. In my opinion, the concept art for the map looks simply AMAZING, a dark sunset on a desolated mining facility. It looks really good, that groomy atmosphere. However, the in-game look of the map, looks too bright, almost nothing like the concept art, which I think is a shame, I think a map with a more serious tone, darker colors, etc. would be an incredible addition, most of the maps are too, let’s say, “cartoony” when it comes to color palettes, almost never looks like a battle zone.
Well, that’s my opinion. What’s yours?
If you haven’t seen the pictures, here you go:
Skirmish At Darkstar
It does look interesting and I hope it plays different than battle of sentinel br’s.
Dude, I don’t even want to go into it right now. This is another thing about Halo 4 and 5 that gets under my skin to no end and I’ll just sound like a rampaging pessimist like I always do…
I’ll just say that once again, I’m underwhelmed with the lighting decisions that were made. Yes, visibility is a great thing, but so is making sure the map makes some sort of lasting impression on the player.
christ…
Okay there, I’m done. I promise.
But they always go so -Yoinking- overboard with the brightness.
It’s never 2 shades brighter, or 3 shades brighter, or -Yoinking- 30 shades brighter.
It has to be 500 shades brighter or they can’t sleep. The sun peeking through the murky clouds, the dark, subdued yet somewhat homey atmosphere; and NONE of that is replicated here, it just looks like an uber huge version of the Rig, that I will hereby refer to as Big Rig, if the map is not made any darker before launch. I’m just going to run with it and be super annoying about it. You will never hear me call it by it’s real name.
If you’re going to blatantly post concept art in comparison to the actual thing, then you may as well make dang sure it looks like that in the game. We don’t even HAVE settings like this in Halo and it would really be nice to see one, but because you folks down at the studio are so convinced that dark, moody settings like Eden and… this map here, simply cannot exist in a Multiplayer scenario I know that’s never going to happen. Not sure why every facet of the game needs to revolve around player visibility so bloody much. We’re bright Red and Blue tanks running around for god’s sake.

Well, I’m with you on this, I would love to see this map being like the concept art, all dark and obscure… Yet the actual map looks, as you said, like Rig… But if people don’t say anything, then they won’t do anything about it

That’s what’s most baffling about this. Why bother with the concept art if the map itself literally looks NOTHING like it? The overly-bright neon-ness of this game just irks me.
Halo 3 was way brighter and more colorful than say ODST or Reach but it still looked gritty and realistic to an extent, why can’t Halo 5 look like that?

When you think about it, it actually makes sense tbh

From a conceptual point of view. But it looks completely different.
HaloFollower came out with a really good video about Dark Star. His rant is similar to yours, Polygoner.
Looks like this map will have more cover from bases
Almost all the maps in Halo 5 are like this now, super bright with a color palette that is starting to seem like the new CoD games. In previous games, the maps were dark and gloomy, almost like a battle was taking place there, but now they all look like something out of Splatoon.
The previews of Noctus looked incredible. But the reality was something different entirely. I’m not going to get excited at all. I would rather set my expectations really really low and then maybe be surprised.

I was dissappointed when I found out that noctus has no tunnel system. It would fit so perfect on that map, like the tunnels on mombasa from ODST or h2.
I’m just disappointed they are using the same base design for all the Warzone maps!

Tunnels are cool…

It does look similar, and its kinda the same concept… But at least Boneyard looked like a deserted wasteland, where a battle took or would take place, in Darkstar it looks just to bright and clean.

Halo 5 has a serious problem in map variety… Almost every map is human-based, 2 Covenant-based and 2 Forerunner-based… And almost all of them are bright and clean

I still don’t know what to expect for a new mantis other than that they need to cost less for REQ points or upgrade the armor a bit. Can you imagine a mantis firing needler rounds? Maybe that’s a discussion for another day…
The map. Yeah… The sand is going to get EVERYWHERE. Spartan Palmer will have to take the shop vacuum to you for a week before she gets it all out.
Let’s look at our Warzone maps so far. Sandy beach/jungle. Sand. Snow. City. Now? More sand. Next? We should probably get more sand in here. Get an drink emblem with a little umbrella in it. It looks like it could have a lot more cover between bases, and possibly the bases being more open with debris scattered about? Not sure if it will be too cluttered for vehicles to be effective with people running from point to point or if will have some more open terrain about it. Buildings taller than 2 stories would be cool. Like a middle building with 4 floors to clear out. Heck bring back Sidewinder and just have it make a big S with a base in the middle and armories at either end and the core at the ends of the tails. You can even make it sand instead of snow! Idk. I just hope this map is more balanced then ARC…
first look at in-game map it kinda reminds me of Boneyard from reach.
I think it would be really cool to have a darkish map. Like nighttime but also covered by.soot so the sunlight barely gets through. It would make for interesting sightlines and it would make sense with this map. Darkstar…
I really hope it doesnt end up that bright, huge shame if it does. The concept art was great. We need more dark and serious maps. Most look cartoony and feels like im playing Sonic the Spartan Hedgehog than Halo.
