Warzone: Constructive Criticism

I’ve been playing a lot of Warzone, both with a group of friends and alone, so I thought I’d give my notes on the game type. Instead of just complaining about what I dislike I will just say ideas to add. Don’t think anyone needs to hear “NOT ENOUGH MAPS” again either. There are indeed also general gameplay/matchmaking issues across the board but I tried to keep this to just Warzone related stuff. Like quitting isn’t a special warzone or even a Halo issue to be honest, it’s a spoiled gamer issue.

  • AI: there is a reason for the Grunt Birthday party skull
So, by far, the biggest issue with Warzone is the AI. For a game type that was supposed be heavy in the PVE it seems like an afterthought. There are far too few AI enemies and most aren’t fun to fight, more of “hey team we better all get power weapons and steal the Warden kill or we suddenly loose”. The Marines are -Yoinking!- great, honestly couldn’t complain, they are easy/fun to fight but if you ignore them they wreck you; maybe have the marines get chances to spawn with power weapons or something late game. Overall issue is the lack of diversity in both the enemies but in what the enemies do, they just act like MMO mobs.

Where are all the damn grunts! Seriously why is a single OP ghost dropped with 3 grunts, I wipe my -Yoink- with 3 grunts. I want like 20 all fighting & running away as they do! Maybe have a large group of AI enemies spawn in/attack the middle base or something. Maybe a squad of ODST marines could drop in on the map with better weapons & more life than normal marine. Just sick of being able to look at the time/spawn location and know what enemy it will be, especially with the diversity of enemies in the lore. Also add some reasoning/objective beyond just killing them even if it’s just time based values of the AI enemies (faster you kill them the more points you get). Again it just seems wasted to have 2 hunters spawn at each armory on Stormbreak and they just sit there like idiots. GO ATTACK THE DAMN BASES, if none of the team tries to kill them it makes the base neutral again.

  • Matchmaking/Teams: Where are you I need a gunner
As of right now even when you are in a voice chat party/fireteam there is no way to easily tell where those teammates are on the map. Most games give them a special color: enemies are red, team is green, and then party members are blue. Annoying to spawn with a nice warthog or some other thing with a gunner, try to drive to a fireteam member and I end up driving to a random person with a similar tag thing. Another issue I’ve noticed, but this may already be in the works to fix, is that if your fireteam gets put into an already started game it will try to balance the team numbers instead of making sure you are on the same team; luckily for the people we play me/my friends are more than willing to murder each other rather than cheat. Just annoying as both of these issues seem so simple to fix and most online games already include these things. The later issue I mentioned seems weird as they are so strict about cheating through parties as you can’t even join FFA if you are in a party.

I think they also need to add a ranking system or something. Maybe not to keep really good players away from bad players but to keep new people from having this new game type ruined. Example: You are maybe level 5, opened 5 req packs. You don’t have a DMR or BR in loadouts yet but decide to try out Warzone, by lvl 5 reqs you are completely outclassed as those around you can spawn in tanks/armor abilities/special weapons and best you got is a single Lightrifle card. You don’t know the maps or spawning style you are completely lost. Maybe just like people with under 10 warzone games are all placed in a noob-matchmaking or something, like how you have to get ranked in Arena. Also pre-game player menu! And, this goes for all game types, I hate having to wait for the match to load in annoyance because some -Yoink!- has kids screaming into their headset and I can’t mute them.

  • Pre-selected loadouts: When did I get to level 6? why am I still spawning with a pistol? I feel this one is pretty straight forward and in halo 4 there was preselected loadouts, U just wish there was something like that for Warzone. Sometimes I completely forget that I could have changed over to a DMR and in gen it’s a little annoying to constantly have to deal with the menus for basic weapons. Related note is that some starting weapons are req level 1 but who is going to change to them after the start? Why can’t we set it so you have like 9 classes, each related to the in-game req level, whenever you spawn at that level (unless you change the req yourself) it will spawn you with the preset. Too often I’ll be like level 7 and starting to get wrecked because I haven’t remembered to apply my armor ability or DMR (which are level 5 and 6 respectively).

Plus if you have all the basic weapons it can be an overcrowded mess in the menu. There are only like 3 ARs I like and one of those I use almost every game, but by level there are like 10 ARs to pick from. Even if they can’t do pre-sets for levels for whatever reason maybe they can make various req things grayed out for the in warzone game menu. Sure the suppressed weapons are cool but they are useless for my play style so the only thing having them in the menu does is potentially mess me up when all I want is the Kinetic Bolt one. So to summarize I’d like it if I could at level 6 spawn with a Kinetic AR, DMR, and Advanced Sensors without having to go into the menus/change things unless I want something different from my presets.

Alright guys, thanks for reading and let me know what you think. Please tell me if you like my ideas, your own, or why you think mine might not work.

I love everything that’s been said here. I whole heartedly agree, OP.

Me too.

I like these suggestions. I keep telling all my buddies that warzone just doesn’t have enough PVE content and the Legendary takedowns are worth way too much. They add in like like 20 more encounters per match and make the legendary take down points to like 50 points and it would be much more fun.

I agree withe the PVE. I do think adding a large flood swarm would be pretty rad. For instance, in stormbreak, have em climb up one of the cliff’s and swarm all three based at one time.
I would also love to be able to hide most of the AR’s, so a hide option pre game would be cool. Or some sort of pre selected loadout based on level, or both, really.

Slightly off topic but does the new Warzone map battle of Noctus not show up in Warzone Assault?

Another thing I would like to see is a bit of randomisation. For instance, it’s very frustrating being on a team with inexperienced players. They don’t know the spawn points of the boss AI. Even more frustrating when the enemy is waiting on said AI at their spawn points. If the spawn points were random, and only the spawn points, the games would be more even. Tank master rok could spawn in the middle of the map rather than the beach etc etc. Just my opinion.

Agree with OP, I’ll add one thing though.

The REQ system for vehicles. Nothing is worse than when one lucky player spawns in an ultra banshee, and turns the tide of the game all by themselves. This then encourages the rest of their team to spawn their scorpions which leads to a steamroll. All this while my team is trying to kill them with ghosts and BR’s. Not saying it’s lay to win, but the outcome is dependant on your luck with REQ packs.

Vehicles should be placed or spawn in on the maps, as with halo tradition, not this garbage. Most war zone matches I can’t even use the more fun vehicles because I don’t have any.

yes to all.

This

So much yes!
Noob lobby would be nice just to allow people to get use to the mode.
I’d agree with everything else, I’d also add:
(Already said) but random AI, is it 2 hunters, or 4 ultra elites with mad fuel rods/swords? Is it 2 knights with scatters? Or 2 with binary rifles and another 2 with scatters? It would be amazing if the AI changed from game to game, also, I find air AI very dumb.
I’d say AI should not drop nades, to keep the spam a bit down.
Should also be a mode to start at req 5 or even 9, imagine spawning in against warthogs/tanks immediately! Would be chaos
I’d also like a mode like conquest from bf4

I’m with you 100%

No

Another addition to my original topic

  • Req Card Sharing: there is no best sauce, only the best saucesNot everyone likes chunky and not everyone wants spicy. Some people like Shotguns, others like rockets. Last week I was finishing up the SAW commendation but I ran out of cards for the SAWs, a buddy I was playing with mentioned how he had a ton of them he wasn’t really using (he likes to play long range). So why not include a sharing system for the req cards? Even if it requires you to be in the same Spartan Company. If anything this would add use/value to the Spartan Companies themselves. Not only for the fact that any group of players likely doesn’t all have the same weapon preferences, but not everyone plays the same amount. Some of my friends don’t play too often so in general they don’t have a ton of req cards to use. Some type of like Spartan Company Armory where members can donate weapon/vehicle cards they don’t want or have excess of to other players or friends. If not that maybe a thing you put cards into that anyone in your Fireteam can use when you are playing together. That way if you aren’t in a Spartan Company or in a large one with a lot of people you don’t really know you could just share with people you randomly partied with or friends you know. This could also be included with the above talked about Company Armory idea.
The game mode in and of itself is pretty addictive, but can also be highly off putting when you got nothing to spawn with even if you are playing with friends. There is no other way to share weapons without dieing really. Once I spawned a ghost just to give to a friend I was playing with & another team member jumped in the ghost/took off the second I got out next to my friend. As well I don’t mind giving someone a power weapon, but I’m not going to kill myself to do it, and there are no real map weapon spawns to organize a switch. If the sharing cards idea is too hard to add maybe a weapons swap ability add-in. Other Halos had this in the campaign, you could switch weapons with the marines by looking at them/standing close to them. Also, -Yoink- it, lets include this not only player swaps but marine AI too. How funny would it be if some people armed a garages worth of marines with SAWs? A waste? Sure, but it would be pretty funny to watch some enemy think they are getting an easy few marine kills and BAM!

This could also work with crawlers, they used to wall crawl all over the place in Halo 4. Another idea if they did add flood might be a map where there is regular/steady flood infection form (like to the extent of the Library level in CE), they’d infect all the dead bosses/spartans/marines around the map making combat forms. It would also promote the use of Forerunner or Kinect Bolt weapons as they don’t leave bodies.

I don’t think they should make them map spawns, but I do think they need a slight tweek. As you said 1 enemy spawns with a tank suddenly there is 4 ghosts, a mantis, and a wrath. Even if your entire team tried to spawn with tanks you’d just get farmed as you’d 1 by 1 coming out of the same location with no really strategic advantage. I’d say a simple fix would be limits per team, like you can’t have 4 tanks at once (at least not on one team). Also include vehicles not being able to go into the enemy base even when you do control all 3 bases. I mean I’ve lost games in the time it takes a tank to blow me up/spawn in with a weapon to fight it because the tank got off like 2-3 hits on the core.

Make it where you have to recapture a base every 5 minutes. It’s campzone, instead of warzone. It’s freaking stupid

Disagree: For every player that camps a structure, that team is effectively down one player doing active fighting and advancing goals. That isn’t to say that defending structures isn’t important, but it’s a logistics issue that the team has to deal with, whether they are aware of it or not. And I’d say there are times – at least once – where everyone thinks “Where is my team…?”

Overall pretty good list. Especially grunt birthday party and more grunts/AI bots to deal with.

I didn;t think of that till after I posted, but a wave of flood combat forms followed by infection spores infecting and reanimating dead spartans would be pretty bad -Yoink-. Make it necessary to focus on the flood. I personally didn’t like the flood in the campaigns, but in warzone I think it would add some serious flavor to the games.

Preselected load outs would be fantastic. I hate changing at 4, 5, 6, and 7.

The air AI (other than capt hestro it seems) is wholeheartedly retarded. i can take down any of other the air AI with just a BR and a pistol all by myself if i so choose, i think they need a little bit of an upgrade.
