Let me start off by saying that I love the Grunt Jockey and the Legendary/Mythic versions of this boss in Warzone and Warzone Firefight. However, as great as it is, the fact that 9 months later this is the only real original boss added to Warzone and it’s modes is very disappointing. What I don’t understand is why 343 seems so insistent on creating recolors of already existing bosses (of which many of the new Knights and Warden Eternals seem to be) rather than tapping into the wealth of possible bosses the Halo universe has to offer. I was initially excited when Endurance-of-Will, a past commander for, and lover to, the Didact from Halo: Silentium was announced for Skirmish at Darkstar, even if she was little more than a red Knight. Jul 'Mdama was a welcome addition if an odd one since he was never billed as much of a skilled warrior in the books and bittersweet given his pretty poor death in Halo 5 and thus not able to reach his potential as a character in the future. But the design philosophy of “new” bosses seems to be based on solely on having the base model for the boss already in the game, making some subtle gameplay tweaks, recoloring it, and passing it off as some new thing. Maybe it saves money and time, but it robs Warzone of truly unique experiences and, let’s be frank, comes off as lazy. I get that game development is hard, but 343 can do so much better.
Just off the top of my head for potential bosses in Warzone:
At this point, it seems the only obstacle is imagination. Warzone could be better and I think some fresh blood in terms of bosses would add more variety and maybe get some people interested in the lore to find where these bosses come from.
It’s a little bland after a few rounds. Most are just bullet sponges with no real mechanic outside, Bring a Bigger Gun!
I want some multi phase boss’s like, shoot down a Phantom, the boss hops out on a ghost, blow that up and then it’s the boss on foot with like, ninja skills!
Spot on dude (Dudette?) I think that this should definitely be addressed considering the rich lore (as you noted). True diversity of the bosses would make the replay value of Firefight all the more longer lasting.
Honestly the only boss that is completely overused is Warden Eternal. In some firefight matches, you will have to kill 5 wardens(2 in wave 3 and 3 in wave 5). I would much rather see something else in place of Warden fights or at least don’t make them so frequent.
The entirety of Warzone is reskins. I think the only reason they even put in the Halo 2 weapons is because the models from H2A look good enough to fit in H5. It took them 7 months to add the wasp, and it’s not nearly as intricate or detailed as building a new boss enemy from scratch. They’ve mentioned adding Brutes to the game, but I think ideas like that won’t hit the front burner until H5 drops in popularity. Too many other things need to come first.
The first major issue I noticed after playing the final release for hours. I kept playing match after match (enjoying myself as well, to be honest) and not too long after downing a few Grunt Goblins here and there I wondered if anything spectacular was really added to the experience that had relevance to the universe. If anything that jogged some fond memories or made me say “ah, I know this character from ‘X’ Halo media!” were added to Firefight in one way or another.
Nah, nothing… and I still haven’t gotten Jul Mdama to spawn on Sanctum, either.
They had NOBODY else they wanted to fight from the books, or even just past Halo games? Seriously? Couldn’t think of a single one?
They could’ve easily used Warden Eternal for the Didact’s rig and just gave him new attacks instead of spamming ‘Mythic’ Wardens (I promise you, one Didact is enough) that are in no way more special, to the player, than the regular Warden.
There’s no Spartan II bosses in the simulation, despite the fact that if anything goes wrong while trying to take in an entire team of AWOL Spartan II’s in one sitting they will need serious training, and backup. The game itself was also advertised as this huge clash between Spartans.
Jul Mdama is the only Elite of relevance. Literally how. You have so many lore choices to choose from.
What about a monitor that will emp vehicles? Or the flood like… any flood form will really do. Or sgt Johnson? Or a lich. Or a super scarab? Or have giant colonies of lekgolo like in nightfall? There are all kinds of potential bosses just waiting to be plucked from the halo universe.
Edit: just for the hell of it why not make a watcher with a binary rifle and incinerator and give it a cool back story?

There are watchers with binary rifles on the Warden wave on AoS. They are pretty -Yoinking!- annoying too.

Are there? I haven’t seen those yet and I constantly get sanctum

It’s the one where you have to destroy the orb before the Wardens become attackable.

Well Halsey does have a point. Most of the bosses are just recycled bosses that is slightly different… which halo 5 is notoriously known for recycling.
Wouldn’t he make the most sense considering his ability to kill Spartans? Also his capture at Midnight implies that information would have been recorded about him.
I’m more upset with playing against Prometheans 90% of the time. Had a match yesterday where it was Prometheans all rounds. Doesn’t help when they are my least liked enemies too.

I’m glad that OP cares about the game a lot, these are the posts that I enjoy reading. I actually learned something from this as opposed to the nerf sprint or AR’s are OP.
I’ve always had this crazy idea of putting a hero in the warzone simulations as bosses, not because they’re evil, but because they would be a good challenge to SPARTANS.
Imagine this: “Thel 'Vadam has just entered the simulation. Show him that you’re worth his time Spartans.”
But this hero bosses would be very rare, lets say 1 in 10 matches, so the original enemy bosses will still be in Warzone, and maybe tha would encourage the players to keep playing, just to see if there are more heroes to fight with.
P.S: I had a dream with this wave once, and even if it was a dream, was a lot of fun to play it,
